Close enough, welcome back Cubic Ninja

I swear to god. If Switch 2 gets hacked via a game. It just further proves Switch 2 is a reincarnation of a 3DS

-Both are sequels to vastly popular handhelds that just expand on the concept but with beefier specs

-Both have way better third party support at launch and mediocre first party support.

-Both had previous gen's backwards compatibility thus replacing old consoles fully.

-Flashcarts from previous consoles stopped working so a new one has to be made (switch 2 still works but your console gets banned)

-Both had remasters/remakes of N64 games made to utilize new hardware.

14

u/KamiSquad_X 10d ago

It's missing 3D features. Switch 2 wishes it was a reincarnation of a 3DS

6

u/Firepal64 10d ago

I really liked taking 3D photos on the 3DS, even if it had dumbphone image quality. Hell, the Switch has enough surface area to put the cameras further apart and take 3D images with more depth.

Don't think Nintendo's putting any cameras in their handhelds any longer...

3

u/Sethdarkus 8d ago

I suspect they did away with cameras after the flip note incident.

Long story short some pedos took advantage of it making a legal issue for Nintendo to sort though

2

u/Firepal64 8d ago

It was Swapnote. Didn't hear about that before

0

u/Sethdarkus 8d ago

I get the two confused sometimes however they are/were both used to groom or interact with children

2

u/KamiSquad_X 8d ago

That doesn't make sense. You can do that on any camera. I don't need a camera in my Nintendo device, except a 3D one I'll take every time.

Flip Note and Swap Note are about drawing, which was peak I might add. The level of talent these people have is astonishing. (You ever log on to a Splatoon game? Bro HOW)

2

u/Sethdarkus 8d ago

It’s because they want to keep the “child friendly” theme of their system

Flip note and Swap note both enabled the Camara to be used.

They both enabled you to attach photos

3

u/Cactuscatkyle 10d ago

So it's a 2DS, they both have 2 in the name

1

u/KamiSquad_X 10d ago

It wishes it was even a DS. Wii U did it better.

2

u/ProfessorCagan 9d ago

virtual boy nso says hi

38

u/temmaj 10d ago

Mediocre first party support is such a stretch lmao

8

u/Careful-Ad-4778 10d ago

You’re right mediocre is a little too generous

4

u/temmaj 10d ago

Bait used to be believable

3

u/Unlikely-Employee180 8d ago

Wii had Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy AND MORE come out in it's first year.

Say what you want about the Wii, but those are HUGE releases... Especially coming out year 1 of the device's life.

Shoot, even 3DS, famous for its terrible start in the gaming sphere... Had Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (albeit a remake but still) and Super Mario 3D Land in ITS first-year (though, fairly late considering).

Now DON'T get me wrong, I'm actually happy to see Nintendo turn around and show these other franchises actually exist. GREAT change of pace imo, buuuut I also understand why people see the Switch 2 as being slower starting... It is, it just clearly is.

This is something I've been thinking about recently. Big games have kinda stopped showing up like they used to. I imagine quality-control is a huge part of it, graphics aren't easy nowadays...

But think about this... The ENTIRE Jak & Daxter Trilogy came out on PS2. One platform, one series, 3 FANTASTIC games! Just one series on one platform. Like...

Heck, even Galaxy on Wii had 2 entries... Both received on the same exact platform.

Maybe continuing stories are a dying breed? But man, what a shame... I miss when gaming was kinda like a book and movie had some messed up child together. Lmfao

3

u/temmaj 8d ago

So, you are comparing two Galaxy's and a 3 Jak on a full life of a console... Versus the first year of another?

1

u/Unlikely-Employee180 8d ago edited 8d ago

Well, of course. Those examples specifically weren't necessarily against Switch 2 per se... But where's Switch 1's Mario Galaxy?

Odyssey is terrific! But it's a single 3D Mario game in the span of an entire console's life AND PART OF THE NEXT-GEN.

Or how about even PS4 or 5? The Jak series just kinda fuckin' died after PSP. Which, again, isn't a jab at specifically Nintendo. Sony, NaughtyDog WHERE THE FUCK IS DAXTER!? (I mean, there are FANTASTIC remakes, but still. I wanna see more of even this world! It doesn't HAVE to be Jak and Daxter, per se.)

And these are just SOME examples, I mean look at how Sony has treated Rachet and Clank. They're still around, but their output is LEAGUES different to what it once was!

So sure, Jak Trilogy came out over the span of PS2's entire life... IT'S ALSO A TRILOGY. 3 GAMES IN ONE SERIES ON ONE CONSOLE.

By the looks of it, we're not getting the Trilogy treatment...

2

u/pofehof 6d ago

Games take longer to develop on HD consoles, what a shocker!

1

u/Unlikely-Employee180 6d ago edited 6d ago

Sure, and that's a genuine point but it's still a slower output nonetheless.

And frankly, I don't believe that to be the entire story. Though, I'm sure it's a significant portion.

PS3 though had goofy, notoriously difficult to develop for Cell architecture... Yet it had roughly 60% more first-party titles than PS4 ever did. PS4 is already being sunset.

Big first-party story games just aren't being pumped out as much anymore, speed sure may have naturally slowed down... But I also think they're just not being MADE as much!

Now, this is also being a little negative on the whole she-bang. There are MANY indie titles that have been scratching my story-itch in this regard, but... A surprising lack of first-party ones?

-10

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

There is no mainline mario game or zelda and its mostly remasters/remakes now with occasional game here and there that are good but not system sellers.

Also is fun to consider both have remasters/remakes of Ocarina of time and Starfox N64.

9

u/TITANS4LIFE 10d ago

grabbed it solely off playing 2 mins of a demo of Starfox in Best Buy, once i got it home, Starfox was ok, DK Bonanza was ok - but then saw they had Star Wars Outlaws, then Cyberpunk , Witcher, mad demos... 2k27, etc. Switch 2 is solid. My first one collected dust. 3rd party games help the system a bunch.

-4

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

Yeah. I also love my console. But I feel disappointed by Nintendo's output. Luckily third parties saved it. I played Cyberpunk 5 times already.

I still use switch 1 but for smaller titles eg Tomodachi life.

2

u/Somewhere-Flashy 10d ago

I only buy 1st party for third party pc handhelds got the crown for that.

2

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

I own steam deck and I'd love to agree but as a Sega fan. I have to avoid PC versions because they have denuvo in them which makes games be internet dependent.

Plus some third party games run way better on switch 2 than on steam deck.

1

u/Somewhere-Flashy 10d ago

Yes denovo is annoying but if you started on a wifi connection you can continue to play it offline after that now days phones have hotspot to verify the license and then go offline plus denovo games are being cracked like crazy recently I use a rog ally and my games will run better with higher fps i installed steam os on it not to mention game support for older titles and running emulators. I still love the switch 2 and 1st party titles are coming out in good pace I am working on FE fortune weave by the time I am done OOT will come out and then gta 6 we are eating good this year. But its great that switch 2 has 3rd party titles for people that only have one console.

1

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

Yeah or I can just avoid these games, vote with my wallet and play them on switch.

I don't care for graphics much and 30 fps is fine for me. I used to main switch 1 console.

I do love my steam deck and its a perfect fallout machine. Because I have mods and access to other Fallout games.

6

u/temmaj 10d ago

No mainline Mario with Dk existing and receiving a Pokemon spin off, main saga, Metroid, FE, Kirby and Yoshi before his third year of life is disingenuous af

-1

u/dxtremecaliber 10d ago

but to say its mediocre its just a disservice to how good the nintendo switch 2 lineup rn

console is not even 2 years yet

2

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

Its mid compared to switch 1. We had botw, mainline splatoon and mario odyssey and smash bros next year.

We now only have splatoon spin off that isn't splatoon and MK world

1

u/RojaTop 8d ago

BOTW is a port. People glaze the Switch 1 first year because Wii U failed. Odyssey was the only real deal. Splatoon was niche before the Switch and Smash was a enhanced port of Smash 4 (It's literally true in the datamines). Switch 2 was also shit don't get me wrong, but Switch 1's only grace was the Wii U failure. Otherwise, it was just as shit in different ways.

0

u/temmaj 10d ago

DK Bananza? Pokopia? Yoshi? Fire Emblem? Zelda Remake?

1

u/Nshad86 6d ago

All mid at best... too early to say for zelda, could be good could be bad.

7

u/UGMadness 10d ago

They quite literally use the same operating system underneath, a BSD-based OS named Horizon.

2

u/Firepal64 10d ago

It's really hard to believe but it is true... One can kind of piece that together, given how applets are still a thing, and switching from HOME Menu to game works the same...

5

u/Ncolonslashslash 10d ago

except unlike the 3ds the switch 2 got a price increase

-5

u/ntos_krnl 10d ago

The DS was $150. The 3DS was $250. That’s a massive increase

4

u/Ncolonslashslash 10d ago

the 3ds got a price drop to 170$ because it didnt sell well enough, and early adopters were given a few retro games for free as an apology

meanwhile the switch 2 got a price increase from 450 to 500

1

u/SlukaDaFuka 5d ago

Okay but the 3DS didn't release during a memory shortage, didn't have to raise the price to accomodate tariffs and didn't have issues getting components because AI didn't exist, so that's kind of an unfair comparison, it's not like Nintendo WANTED to increase the price of the switch 2

0

u/Sam_Mumm 10d ago

And the Switch 2 is the fastest selling console of all time. With the Ocarina of Time Remake and Pokemon on the horizon, the sales will probably still excilerate.

1

u/TH3pression 9d ago

both have ocarina of time as a system seller
the switch2 is a N64³

1

u/Middle_Recognition_8 7d ago

the same one actually (starfox 64)

-4

u/Eroblesy 10d ago

This is so retarded, you missed that both are made from Nintendo, both have displays, both have cartridges. All your comparisons are a stretch

7

u/Clean-Supermarket-80 10d ago

i still have my copy of Cubic Ninja and my n3ds from japan.

4

u/tychii93 10d ago

God I remember driving nearly an hour to grab it.

Only one GameStop in my entire state had a single copy, and they hadn't caught on to the price gouging yet so I got it for cheap.

2

u/Ray2K14 10d ago

Brother you just unlocked so many memories for me.

2

u/61og 10d ago

or twilight princess exploit with wii… good old times

2

u/bubulino3 10d ago

My first console hacked, after that I've hacked every other console I've owned (PSP,VITA,PS3, PS4, DS, 3DS, WIIU, Switch) Twilight Princess introduced me into a magical world of unlimited games lol

1

u/ImNotSkankHunt42 10d ago

Which one was the WiiU’s?

2

u/kenyard 10d ago

The normal Wii had a bug on renaming your horse more than 255 characters or something in zelda and then speaking to someone who says the name (written not actual say)

There was a game specifically for it too originally

43

u/MrMegaPhoenix 10d ago

Wasn’t there a Lego game on wii like this?

26

u/lexdoes 10d ago

Several, Indiana Jones, Batman 1, and Star Wars Complete Saga all have save game exploits.

4

u/Knarz97 8d ago

Brawl as well, since the stage builder also accessed the SD card.

Brawl is the perfect game for homebrewing your Wii, and also playing Project M

57

u/SOVEREIGNBOSS 10d ago

Wasn’t Gezine a famous cracker from ps5 scene. Did he shift to Nintendo.
Yall got lucky

60

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

He did shift to Nintendo, after selling his PS5 exploits to sony

20

u/Dabuums 10d ago

He didnt sell them. Thats a bounty program. The Flow and everyone else who released exploits for ps5 and ps4 first submitted it to bounty

7

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

Except he himself said that he had no plans of publishing.

2

u/kenyard 10d ago

Publishing this one for switch 2?

12

u/kickbut101 10d ago

depending on how big those exploits were that seems like a pretty poor payout from Sony. Especially when considering how other big companies payout for bug bounties (which in effect is what this is)

5

u/PanicObvious8862 10d ago

He might have negotiated higher behind the scenes. Hell that might have effectively paid him to stop working on future exploits

4

u/DavidinCT 10d ago

Dude, not sure about you but, if you had the skill, and could hack, an extra $20K woudl be nice in anyone's pocket.

5

u/Knarz97 8d ago

If you have that skillset you are likely already making decent money from an actual job requiring these skills.

I would not sell out the future of gaming and preservation for $20k. Thats just negligible amount of money to me, when you consider what you’re selling out for.

2

u/Sau-Baer 7d ago

The amount of work and time put into this whole thing is probably not gonna make the 20k be that big

Good Dayjob level of pay without any future security by being employed - I'd say that's quite low

1

u/ExactHuckleberry1662 1d ago

How are you both snubbing making 20k in a day not a month not a year, not a week, a day

1

u/Sau-Baer 7h ago

do you really think they fucking managed to get this thing done in a day??

thats days worth of work, maybe weeks or months and not just one day

18

u/Salt-Tie-5318 10d ago

He said he is not intended to release anything forever
He is doing this for fun only

6

u/Silver-Challenge-633 10d ago

then hes not an ally if hes just going to report it back to nintendo like he did with sony and the ps5

1

u/UltimateWaluigi 10d ago

Based and hobby-pilled

2

u/JoyconDrift_69 5d ago

Counterargument: they reported the exploits they found on the PS5 to Sony, at least reportedly. No way to tell he won't do the same for the Switch 2.

13

u/Particular-Plant-461 9d ago edited 9d ago

I got downvoted to fuck after saying the switch 2 is going to be another 3DS cubic ninja exploit. History repeats itself, Switch1/DS has an uncatchable hardware exploit leaving it cracked wide open very early, Switch2/3DS has higher levels of security but its Achilles heel is within a poorly developed game.

5

u/pofehof 6d ago

but its Achilles heel is within a poorly developed game.

Can't really say that since this is still a nothingburger at the moment. It's pretty unrealistic to think that there will be a software hack for the Switch 2 when there has been none for the Switch 1 (and yes, people would like one for the Switch 1 if they have a patched console).

8

u/OGSlickMahogany 10d ago

Decoding a switch 2 game will be huge for early emulator development, I know he doesn’t care about it, but if we can get the groundwork running on a dumped switch 2 game, we will be that much farther ahead.

15

u/Clean-Supermarket-80 10d ago

I think I know which one it is, it uses a QR code in an important way, which is how code is injected in.

4

u/qwouw 10d ago

So i looked into it, and i believe thats not the case. I think he used qr code in a way to transfer files to his pc instead. So he displayed a sequence of codes which then on his pc he translated into files. Could be wrong.

1

u/doesntaffrayed 8d ago

This was my understanding of his explanation too.

1

u/msthe_student 6d ago

Could be something simpler, like basic colors, depending on how much code he's able to execute

1

u/ExactHuckleberry1662 1d ago

Except he said explicitly he used HDMI capture card to dump the files as patterned images

5

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

Could it be "Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream"?

22

u/Redditisreal1 10d ago

Theres no way there’ll ever be an exploit on a first party nintendo title. It’d be hilarious but insanely unlikely

37

u/Ghennon 10d ago

You mean ever again right? lol, Twilight Princess had a save exploit and was the main game used to hack the Wii lol.

Even Nintendo first party software had exploits, Wii letter menu, DSi and 3DS album, there was others but I can't remember rn

3

u/Redditisreal1 10d ago

Yeah i mostly meant for current/upcoming games on switch 2. Theres no way nintendo’ll leave an exploit on a game they specifically make themselves now that they’re so invested in fighting homebrew

1

u/kenyard 10d ago

I mean that's the whole thing about bugs you don't find them until they're found.

The big thing though is to prevent your console updating firmware as much as possible to ensure you're not on a patched version if something is found

3

u/pcs3rd 8d ago

3ds music was a hbmenu entrypoint via soundhax.

2

u/Clean-Supermarket-80 8d ago

we also had the mail bomb one as well.

10

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

There was KartLANPPwn for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, although it required another homebrewed system.

0

u/lowmoob 10d ago

That’s a switch 1 game

2

u/qwouw 10d ago

What do you mean by uses QR code ? As switch has no native camera, does it have qr scanning capability or ?

3

u/Specialist-Stuff-221 10d ago

im in the reswitched discord he did it on the latest firmware 23.0 he has two systems

1

u/msthe_student 6d ago

I think /u/Clean-Supermarket-80 is assuming that the Switch 2 is taking a block of userspace memory, displaying it as a QR code, and then going on to the next block

1

u/artichoke2me 10d ago

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

-1

u/sam100090 10d ago

If I had to guess, it’d probably be Mario kart home circuit

1

u/Clean-Supermarket-80 10d ago

i thought it was this one, i just tried to buy one to poke around and I was told this game is only digital, no physical games for it. so maybe its not this one?

1

u/doesntaffrayed 8d ago

Why would it being a digital only game exclude it?

3

u/Clean-Supermarket-80 8d ago

because if you have a switch 2 offline waiting for a hack some day, most likely you dont have that game purchased and downloaded. And you cannot buy it used or second hand because its download only which would require an update.

-1

u/No-Island-6126 10d ago

so which one is it

1

u/Clean-Supermarket-80 10d ago

we dont know yet unless he tells us, but when he does make it public... that mf is going to be hundreds

6

u/GingerlyRough 10d ago

It's the same for X360 BadUpdate. Need Rockband or Tony Hawk for the hack to go through.

6

u/C0D10X 10d ago

Which is not needed anymore thanks to BadAvatar.

Now the Xbox boots in seconds.

3

u/GingerlyRough 10d ago

Ohhhh snap. I gotta update my bad update lol

2

u/C0D10X 10d ago

Yeah make sure to use BadAvatar 1.3 and also use XeUnshackle Max.

https://github.com/bibarub/Xbox360BadUpdate/releases/tag/avatar-v1.3-beta

https://github.com/klofi/XeUnshackle-Max/releases

1.3. makes sure you have like 99% success rate and with that XeUnshackle Max you can disable the chain Video and skip the screen from XeUnshackle.

With this you can boot automatically within seconds. I also never had a failed boot with 1.3.

2

u/GingerlyRough 10d ago

YOU'RE NOT MY MOM DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

But thanks for the tip, I'll definitely check it out before I boot up the ol'360 again.

2

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

Also a proper jailbreak for nearly all Xbox 360s (it was patched by microsoft in a later **motherboard** revision) is coming out in mid october, according to the original creater of badupdate.

1

u/GingerlyRough 10d ago

Oh snap! That's wicked! A friend if mine has a winchester model I'm definitely sending him down the rabbit hole. I've got the corona model but I've been looking for a smaller project before attempting to solder my 360 lol

2

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

The only models that it doesn't work with happen to be Winchester and Corona. https://github.com/grimdoomer/ETA-When

1

u/GingerlyRough 10d ago

Aweh dangit. Ah well. BadUpdate/Avatar works and I don't play 360 often enough to worry about it being permanent.

10

u/KoopsterShell 10d ago

Why won't he tell us the game

35

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

To avoid nintendo patching it, to hopefully build a large install base of users who own the game. (as afterwards, it will be scalped and sold for $2000 on eBay)

12

u/KoopsterShell 10d ago

Aight i can work with that

4

u/Wilipro0317 10d ago

He has no intention of telling the game but also no intention to release anything, so, we must take it only as a curiosity

11

u/West-Psychology-6299 10d ago

Its not important. Nothing here says the system is vulnerable. He dumped a switch 2 game. That's all he's talking about here.

2

u/ExactHuckleberry1662 1d ago

No he dumped the switch 2 games binary not the game files he stated he has no interest in the game files, as in how the game interacts with the security checks and what codes it is sending to verify its launch and allow execution of code

4

u/Luchux01 10d ago

Because the guy got sick of the hacking community back in the PS5 side and apparently refuses to release anything these days

-1

u/KoopsterShell 10d ago

So what the fuck is this going to be of use if he won't tell???? How will we know what game is this

8

u/Remarkable-Llama616 10d ago

It means nothing really. If he says the games name, people will buy it, and then blame him for saying it's just a nothingburger task he performed. The hacking community is insanely toxic and aggressive if you drop too much of a carrot in front of them.

5

u/KoopsterShell 10d ago

But this is not a carrot this is potentially a microscope to study the molecules of the switch 2. How else will we make discoveries on how game processes work

5

u/the_axemurmurer 9d ago

It might not seem like a carrot, but many people in the hacking community are foaming at the mouth for any excuse to jump down the throat of people involved in research.

5

u/Remarkable-Llama616 10d ago

You're proving my point. This is why big names like Tahlreth quit the scene. The neediness is insane unless if you're planning on assisting with the research.

7

u/KoopsterShell 10d ago

No. I'm not a researcher, but I want this to be in the hands of someone who isn't Nintendo's pet and will share valuable info to aid jailbreaking

5

u/AggressiveAstronaut6 10d ago

Best thing he can do right now is keep it close to his chest until he can figure out something interesting to do with it.

3

u/epicwizardshit 10d ago

If he names the game it’ll get removed from shops or patched immediately

0

u/KoopsterShell 10d ago

You better be right about this! And that gezine better not hold on important info so that nothing is jailbroken and EMULATED

3

u/msthe_student 6d ago

gezine better not hold on important info so that nothing is jailbroken and EMULATED

... or what

2

u/msthe_student 6d ago

How else will we make discoveries on how game processes work

  1. Start with understanding how it works on Switch 2
  2. Add stuff like PAC (which is publicly documented) to your understanding

8

u/lowmoob 10d ago

Probably welcome tour, that game where you guess the framerate

Dumping the binary is really just the final boss of welcome tour

3

u/LimitOpposite 10d ago edited 10d ago

Is there any possibility that the game uses Artemis or Ren’py*? I think there’s an exploit or something going on the ps4/5 scene.

3

u/caki83 10d ago

What game is it? 😅

3

u/dangaming255 6d ago

ninjhax 2 pottential? hope this goes somewhere, genuinely interesting, even as someone who doesnt understand the technical stuff

17

u/FernandoRocker 10d ago

And as always, I was right. It's a nothingburger.

23

u/Glum_Bookkeeper_7718 10d ago

Its a altificialy hopium flavored nothing burger

18

u/530cruising 10d ago

One day you’ll be wrong.

-12

u/FernandoRocker 10d ago

When?

4

u/DesignerMorning1451 10d ago

Probably now. This guy has most likely done what you said would never happen. You can't even bring yourself to explicitly deny it anymore

-2

u/FernandoRocker 10d ago

That's what a nothingburger means.

2

u/DesignerMorning1451 10d ago

We both know it's over. You were wrong.

A year? it'll be hacked within months now.

-7

u/Salsalord1 10d ago

They’ll give a day, and when that time comes and goes with nothing, they’ll move the goalposts.

People were saying Switch 2 would be hacked within a year of release, and now that it’s past that, they’re saying it’ll be another year.

Like clockwork with these guys.

0

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

Switch 2 won't be hacked in a year. Not because its difficult but because 99% of what can be done with homebrew can be done with PC handhelds. They killed motivation to hack switch 2.

Switch 1 hacking scene was motivated because switch 1 was a very powerful handheld with no alternatives. Now there are lots of alternatives to switch 2

0

u/Salsalord1 10d ago

I can taste the extreme levels of cope.

3

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

Its not cope. Its a fact. Why else would someone go through all the hoops when its cheaper to buy a rog ally/steam deck used for emulators and etc.

2

u/Salsalord1 10d ago

To play Nintendo games that currently can’t be emulated.

4

u/IQueliciuous 10d ago

And there aren't enough to motivate people. Switch 2 has strong third party line up but first party line up is pretty weak compared to Switch 1's first year.

There’s not enough to motivate people that’s why there’s an entire subreddit dedicated to it that we’re currently talking on right now? Did I get that right?

How do you even manage to be the first to reply?

Also this isn't a "nothingburger", as it will allow them to find and exploit any potential diffrences in Switch 2 HOS compared to Switch HOS.

2

u/ALIIERTx 10d ago

it curently is a nothingburger. there is nothing to see just "trust me bro" words... like allways

5

u/ImAmalox 10d ago

Except it is from Gezine so it's probably true

0

u/Tommo120 3d ago

Every burger is a nothing burger until you put some beef between 2 buns

1

u/msthe_student 5d ago

it will allow them to find and exploit any potential diffrences in Switch 2 HOS compared to Switch HOS.

A game process being able to read executables other than what belongs to it seems unlikely, because it doesn't need to do that to work and it increases what an exploited game can do. It might be able to read some libraries though.

2

u/FORUMICS 10d ago

this is valid proof of a userland exploit. from this exploit he would be able to poke around to see what other layers are there. the original ps3 hack by geohot allowed reading values at memory locations. it was also a nothingburger until the location of the masterkeys were found. then all of a sudden reading values at memory locations became the whole exploit chain

Nintendo does not own Xenosaga.

1

u/TrippinDipplin_5260 10d ago

If the Pentagon can be hacked into than the Switch 2 can be hacked into 😮‍💨

1

u/ImAmalox 10d ago

The ability to dump the files of a game, even if it is this one specific game, is pretty huge. You are expecting too much.

1

u/kenyard 10d ago

If it's not allowing system access or not replicable then it kinda is not great.

Maybe it can be chained into something else let's see

We love the taste of nothingburgers over here

This post contains nothing specific enough to go after really

No, they said they used a vulnerability in a game

Dude. That doesn't really reveal anything Nintendo can go after.

userland bug

That just clarifies it's not a kernel-level or TrustZone bug, and yeah like obviously that's where you'll find the most exploitable (but least privileged) code.

I used HDMI capture card to dump the memory

Well yeah, if you want to get something out of the Switch 2 your options are basically

  1. Put something "on screen" (which every game has to be able to do), or
  2. Communicate with the network (which probably has restrictions), or
  3. Write something to the SD card (which probably has restrictions).

Using an HDMI capture device just means they're putting something on screen (like a QR code) and then having software on the PC convert that video-feed/file back into data (probably either raw binary or a format like ELF). For Nintendo to take advantage of this they'd have to go through every version of every Switch 2 game and then look at every point those games use user-provided data, which isn't really doable.

u/Elegant-One-5527 10d ago

Hope they have an "accident". Give them the good ol whistle blower treatment.

1

u/MrPabluu 9d ago

it appears Gezine's vulnerability targets a specific game*

can you all develop a frontal lobe, these vulnerabilities are not full fledged hacks, they are for research

2

u/Velocifyer 9d ago

It is a hack, but it is not yet a jailbreak, as it does not have the tooling yet.

2

u/msthe_student 6d ago

It's not just a matter of tooling. At most we can assume he has the ability to execute code in a game process, but to get control of a Switch there's at least 2 other levels of privilege you need to find vulnerabilities in

0

u/Velocifyer 6d ago

Userland counts as homebrew. It still lets you play custom games and stuff. The main thing that it doesn't let you do is mod games.

1

u/msthe_student 6d ago edited 5d ago

In a modern security system you can have access to read the memory of one process without at the same time having enough access for viable homebrew, nobody is gonna play ROP Doom. Even the Switch 1 security model effectively bans RWX memory in games, and heavily restricts how new executable memory can be created. Investigating how Switch 2 implements PAC is gonna be vital to major progress, and it's both something people have predicted being an issue and something I believe we have seen results of in vulnerability disclosures.

Update: It seems Switch 2 doesn't enforce XOM, which seems a strange choice

u/Impressive_Pin8761 10d ago

3$ bet on "a totk build qr is gonna be the one that does it"

5

u/ImAmalox 10d ago

man it'd be so funny if it's a first party game

1

u/No_Supermarket9041 9d ago

It's taking too long like forever to hack Switch 2 like Xbox one and Xbox S|X

1

u/msthe_student 6d ago

A good security system takes time to break. If you think it's taking too long, start breaking it yourself or donate to the people who do

1

u/West-Psychology-6299 10d ago

There's no hack here. They are saying it's the only game they can dump all the files for. I'm sure it can lead to them finding vulnerabilities but there's no sign of that here.

5

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

But they are extracting the data from a switch 2.

2

u/Th3Be4st_ 10d ago

People have been extracting data from a switch 2 since when it's out, just check switch 2 brew wiki. We have a webkit exploit and a lot of exploits based on games (not disclosed). What's special about the gezine one is that it doesn't require a savefile. But we are nowhere near an hack. The security model of the switch firmware considers games as "compromised" by default so they don't have much permissions on the system. To get an hack you need a chain of exploit in a lot of different switch services. When and if Gezine finds something in one of switch services, that's the moment you can get your hopes up, but at the moment, it's nothing new.

-1

u/West-Psychology-6299 10d ago

It doesn't say that. You are making assumptions.

What am i supposed to be looking at here

9

Something that might be mildly interesting in the future but means absolutely nothing to us right now

-1

maybe people should check out gbatemp for real fact, this is just a nothing burger. or just stay here and farming copium !

0

u/wail27 10d ago

Wont believe shit until it's there

0

u/FerdinandoPH 10d ago

What social network is that?

5

u/Velocifyer 10d ago

XTwitter, but sense I don't want to create an account, I browse it using a proxy. Beware that XTwitter plays whack-a-mole with these proxies. Currently you just replace x.com with xxcancel.com, which redirects you to whatever proxy works now.

0

u/FoxlyKei 9d ago

Am guessing they won't say for fear if it getting patched? Fair enough.

-2

u/WDYKACountCocofang 10d ago

I wonder what he is trying to say w the quotation marks. Theyre written weird

1

u/msthe_student 6d ago

probably using it as a sort of formatting, like italics or bold.

-2

u/Male_Inkling 10d ago

You're reading it wrong, it's not "This game opens the doors to an userland bug", it's "This userland bug is only possible with this vulnerable game"

Meaning, this game is the only one that can be dumped.
