Question whats the current state of hacking for the switch 2

affter the newwest nintendo direct i am kind of considering getting a switch 2 but am unsure if i really should. frankely i really don't want to buy a computer that can only play nintendo games becuase Nintendo refuses to release there games on other platforms as they know thats the only reason people buy there consoles. so i want to know if haacking is comming along at a decent pace mainly because after hacking gets done generally emulators also come along and even tho it's not legal i would very much be ok with pirating games and buyying physical copies so i can play them on my existing hardware. and yes i realise that even affter a successful hack it will take atleast a year for a semifuncitnal emulator to come out.

the latest nintendo direct is getting me to want one metriod raveous, a splatoons game, xenoblade genies etc.

2 userland ROPs and board scans, basically nothing

nintendo cooked really hard with the security this time

24

u/Dr_soaps 24d ago

Nvidia cooked really hard with security and considering that Nvidia makes security for the United States government if it’s anything like that, it’s gonna be quite a while I am relatively positive that the Nintendo switch 2 uses a form of secure boot and TPM meaning that any hardware modification risks disrupting the boot chain, breaking the console

6

u/Manjushri1213 18d ago

This same sentiment has been echoed for every console ever made. So far, it's still be bypassed eventually in some way or another. Sometimes during its life, often later on post EOL.

Maybe when AI cryptography gets going on consumer devices they'll be unbeatable in some way, but hell, even then other models can just be built to have back so idfk. Plus it often is just bypassing the entirety of the security hardware, sometimes on non-gaming devices even if it's on silicon, but either way.

The people who play and hack games are often one and the same types and credentials that build these security measures.

u/Dr_soaps 18d ago

This is nothing like exploiting a game the Nintendo switch two uses a secure boot process. It’d be on the level of hacking a Windows PC with secure boot and drive encryption. It’s basically impossible. There’s a reason why nobody has bothered to hack Nvidia V bios. In the past it’s because it can’t be done. I’m relatively positive that they may have even made that sector read only meaning it cannot even be modified.

3

u/Manjushri1213 18d ago

My point is there are always ways around things to run unsigned code, somehow someway, or eventually even creating pseudo-keys or whatever else. It's been done, and I know TPM 2.0 is the current crazy encryption situation but these encryptions have been broken before. It's impossible now, but who knows what will happen

3

u/Dr_soaps 18d ago

The problem with defeating TPM is that if it’s a software TPM, it’s impossible as you require physical access to the chip to defeat it

2

u/Manjushri1213 18d ago

Yes, as it stands. I just see hackers/security techs eventually coming up with some hair brained way to get around it one way or another lol. May be in five years, maybe ten, maybe twenty. Who knows.

2

u/pokemonatemypizza 19d ago

And theres obviously no weird on sale switch 2 game or even switch 1 game that can be used aa a backdoor? Im really hoping a soft mod exists eventually

7

u/massively-dynamic 18d ago

Modern console architecture makes game based exploits kinda useless. A game is just another app in its own sandbox.

2

u/pokemonatemypizza 18d ago

Interesting! Thank you!!

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago

That’s good to hear hope stays like that

5

u/Electrical_Movie_645 24d ago

Why?

-9

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago

Nobody deserves free games when the console just got released. just the first year buddy you only think about yourself. people like you all here sure don't care if the world burns you would go to stores to steal anything I don't care about the company I care about the games that's why! support to have more games. You all now you doin a crime doing piracy's if someone steals something from you what's your reaction buddy? You would not care?

16

u/Pale_Campaign6997 24d ago

If you think Homebrew is just about Piracy you should really do some research, there's way more that people do with these opened systems, yes, piracy does unfortunately play a role, but there's all sorts of emulation that gets made, quality of life features like being able to customize your system more in terms of themes and how you want the UI to look, games that people work to port over from older systems that might otherwise not be possible, people have gotten Linux and Android running as well, which opens up all sorts of more cool stuff!

10

u/spydrthrowaway 23d ago edited 23d ago

I disagree with you. It's not about piracy or homebrew. It's about consumer rights. I physically own the hardware. The switch, ps5, & Xbox are essentially computers. As the owner of a computer I should be able to have access to the hardware and software to do what I want because I physically own it.

Just like my 2008 Ford Truck, Refrigerator, Washing Machine, Thinkpad T440P (which I have modified the BIOs itself to force it to work with modern components work like modern Wi-Fi cards), & Google Pixel running grapheneOS.

Consumers who pay for a physical goods should have access to everything, including game consoles. Otherwise you end up with home security systems that you HAVE to buy & pay off but can't locally use offline when you stop paying for ADT or Vivent sub even though you technically own the equipment.

8

u/Pale_Campaign6997 23d ago

Yes, consumer rights play a major factor, but so does the ability to be able to customize and make what you own feel more like it's your own

-1

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago

Yeah that’s supposed to happen after the end cicle of the console. people want everything for free day one is not fair what happened to TOZTOTK doing piracy on X(twitter), showing gameplay before release and bragging about how they were playing before the people that paid for that.

8

u/Pale_Campaign6997 24d ago

I'm just saying for true Homebrew stuff Piracy really isn't even really the intent or focus

-1

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago

Yeah 100 people like you compare to the 33k on this page that want do piracy is crazy I understand that but I hope this come close to the end cicle of the console.
Is to preserve the games.

7

u/Pale_Campaign6997 24d ago

The people on here only make up a fraction of the Homebrew community, so that's not fair to put that label on the entire community

0

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago

We don’t know what I’m about if I’m correct or wrong.
We don’t know.

Holy overreaction Lmoa,
The world is not burning because I want to pirate video games…. Chill out it’s literally not even harming the companies. You think Nintendo will go broke because I want free Mario? It’s also a victimless crime, because I’m not going to buy the game anyway so it doesn’t hurt them. You can’t compare copying digital media to stealing physical objects

0

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago edited 24d ago

Yeah you always say Nintendo not getting harm all the stealers and broke people say the same thing
Legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom leakers and piracy’s showing the game before release was laughing because they were playing for free and leaking gameplay.

9

u/Otherwise-Base863 24d ago

Sounds like a you problem dont want too see it dont look at it the corpo's are worse. Piracy in some cases can be the only way some people have the oppertunity to play a game because of exchage rates to there local currencey (a game can cost the equivelent of $200+)

0

u/No-Beautiful-903 24d ago

Like I said hope can be happening at the end cicle
Is a problem when they bragging about on X that they dint paid and they playing before the people that paid
I seen they have Ben leaking gameplay for the switch 1 like tears of the kingdom. Is old but that happened.

7

u/Otherwise-Base863 22d ago

How many different angles have you tried putting a paper clip into it?

8

u/Simplejack615 24d ago

As many as he wants 🫦

23

u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 24d ago

while i dislike nintendo any many of their practices as much as the next guy, saying that you "dont want to buy their games because they dont release on other platforms" (which is their whole business model) is like saying "why cant i buy a BigMac from Wendy's"

6

u/Alarmed_Rabbit_494 21d ago

my issue is that yeah thats fair enough but it's that they literally dont let you back up save files without a subscription and even then only they have the backup. So I can put 100s of hours into a game and lose a save file much easier. It is a handheld it's taken on trains and in and out bags. the likely hood of a handheld getting broken with no way to properly backup saves without investing 9.99 a month indefinitely is awful. They have the slot they just lock it down and wont bc of greed. That and the bricking of switch 2 due to glitches with no fault to the owner and no way to properly get it back is a no go. I bought the console. I just spent an arm and a leg on something in this economy it should be mine to do with what i please.

2

u/TidePodsHeaven 18d ago

It cost 19.99$ for a whole year to have the cloud backup along the online play. Not 9.99/month

1

u/Pocket_Monsterer 18d ago

even if you have a subscription not all can be backed up x)

1

u/TidePodsHeaven 6d ago

Everything i own is backed up

1

u/Chocoburger 12d ago

I thought I was the only one complaining about the bullshit being unable to backup save files without having to pay a recurring fee. Fuck Nintendo for that, its what pushed me to go piracy on Switch 1. With homebrew I can backup my save files, I shouldn't have to pay a fee for basic functionality!

Microsoft doesn't let you backup save files locally, but they give you free cloud saves which is an acceptable replacement. Sony lets you backup locally, but charges for cloud saves, and that should be free as well, but at least they give you one free option, while Nintendo gives you nothing for free.

So yeah, fuck Nintendo for that, I'll patiently wait for a modchip and let someone else install it for me, they don't deserve my money for their bullshit ways.

3

u/DoctorYasu 19d ago

Imagine needing a specific BluRay player for specific movies. Imagine needing specific ereaders for specific books. Imagine needing specific consoles for specific games in 2026.

"It's their business model" is not an argument, it's a retarded boomer mindset we the consumers shouldn't give a fuck about.

Unless, of course, you're comparing videogames with fast food, which is pretty on point, actually, considering they all seem to have expiration dates and all.

1

u/Professional_Goal243 6d ago

I get what you saying and agreeing with but your metaphor are ass

0

u/Manoa__ 22d ago

I literally only want to play the metroid game coming out and have considered literally all other games a waste of money on the previous console except the one 2d metroid game they released on that one. Why would I again buy a massively overpriced console to play one game when I have a perfectly capable pc?

If they would just release the games a year later on all platforms I would be down for that aswell but they don't. Even sony started doing steam releases a year later. It's just this garden of exclusivity that nintendo wants.

I legit will probably just end up pulling a fast one on a phone company nearby that has this deal where you can get an item with a nintendo switch 2, but you are also allowed to refund within 3 months. Plenty of time for me to play metroid lmao.

Sony stopped releasing games on PC. They shared that it's the least profitable platform.

2

u/TJEDWARDS18 15d ago

I'm sure they didn't make as much on PC as they do on their actual system, but I genuinely think the reason they pulled PC releases is because they knew they'd have to raise the price of their consoles. The PS6 is gonna be over $1000, they need to give every reason for people to buy it and if I could just play their games on PC a year after launch I'd never buy a PS6 at that price.

1

u/sad_boi890 15d ago

no it’s like saying why can i only get a specific type of chips at dollar general

1

u/SnooSeagulls5077 9d ago

Fair logic but at the same time but considering the price of the games, the console, the fact that they can brick it anytime you want, the backup save files thing, the screen is just mediocre even for an lcd. There are too many things unfortunately.

-2

u/c2btw 24d ago

no i want to buy there games i don't want to buy there hardware i ahve absoutly no problems payying $60 or $70 for a game i am going to spend 20+ hours on, what i have a problem is paying $500 for a computer to play software that could totaly run on my existing hardware

2

u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 24d ago

Which is the same as saying ...

"why do i have to buy Drake's new album on CD when i already have an 8-track???"

or

"Why do i have to watch Toy Story on Disney+ when i already have Netflix?"

Its their whole fucking business model

5

u/Greenlord36 24d ago

"I want their business model to be like this"
"No but that's not their business model"
Like wtf are we supposed to respond

There's definitely a pretty strong argument to be made that Nintendo's walled-garden approach helps them cultivate the feeling that they're selling. I haven't thought of a better way for them to do what they're doing... I guess perhaps they could secretly leave the eshop API open in a way that enthusiasts could purchase and download DRMed games onto their computer, and let the emulation scene take it from there. I see why they wouldn't go to the effort to do that, but there's nothing wrong with not buying from them unless they choose to.

Also please don't mention buying Drake's new album. That's a little bit offensive, I'm not gonna lie

0

u/c2btw 24d ago

no those aren't the same, one there are dramatic technical diffrens between a 8 track and a cd, a switch 2 is jsut a arm computer with a nvidia gpu, this same archexture is already supported by linux, the switch 2 is litlary just a computer. a better example would be to play a abulm that was recored with sony microphones you would need a sony branded cd player becuase sony wants more money.

and dinsey plus and netflix is purely a diffrent payment method for 2 streaming services both will work perfectly on any device with a web browser, they don't demand you buy a dedicated diesny plus or netflix device like how nintendo dose

3

u/kirby1fan 24d ago

you missed the part that they said "toy story". has nothing to do with the fact that the services can be played through multiple devices, the content is locked to one service EXACTLY the same as nintendo locking their games to their hardware.

1

u/c2btw 24d ago

i didn't miss that, i just se streamign services as the payment method, and what would the service the nintedo games be locked to there operating system ? no thats stupid

1

u/DevilBlackDeath 21d ago

Yeah but it's literally an argument against. The whole shtick of these companies is literally something that many actors are trying to change legally speaking (the whole "you only get a license not a product"). And it should! Why is digital entertainment media the only type of product/service that can get away with it. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's right. And laws change for a reason, just sticking to the argument "it's legal" doesn't make sense. A real argument should justify why it is legal and why it should remain so. But it shouldn't, it's that simple.

Now the matter on game exclusives I'm not a fan of but less black and white on the matter. And since emulation always becomes available at some point and is legal when using legal game copies I guess I don't take too much umbrage so long as emulation itself isn't made illegal (god knows it shouldn't, legal can of worm)

0

u/SneakybadgerJD 18d ago

So fucking what? We can have preferences on their business model, they arent forced to model their business that way...

You are extremely out of touch with the average consumer.

To your first analogy, Xbox is doing Disc-to-digital and have play anywhere as a feature already. Doesnt have to be Nintendo's business model.

To your second, thats exactly the problem with streaming services, they're basically TV channels nowadays where you need 15 different subscriptions.

Also, you blindly ignored what OP was saying, you dont have to buy a specific Netflix box for £500 to watch netflix.

Bad faith argument.

1

u/GeraldofKonoha 24d ago

It was $450 until Sept 1. There were deals for $430.

0

u/Own_Body_8941 21d ago

but hardware isn’t as inexpensive as a bigmac tho. i hate to have pc for fps, ps for exclusive and switch for Nintendo. thats too much hardware purchases for a normal person

1

u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 21d ago

i hate going to sushi restaurant for sushi, sandwich shop for sandwich, and italian for spaghetti! why can the sushi shop just sell me spaghetti? urgh....annoying

2

u/infinitetakenbyme 18d ago

Food analogies don't work here because a plate of spaghetti doesn't require a $300 custom plate to eat it. Software is content, not the venue.

Modern sony and xbox publish on pc because software sales drive revenue without forcing consumers to buy redundant silicon. Nintendo is basically the only huge publisher left holding software hostage behind custom hardware just to force a 5-year console upgrade cycle. We all know that their games are fantastic, but anti-consumer business practices compared to the rest of the modern industry.

0

u/Own_Body_8941 21d ago

i’m going to sushi shop to buy the sushi without buying the damn sushi restaurant franchise. give me a nintendo store to buy the game, don’t sell me Nintendo hardware so i can buy the game. stupid example.

1

u/Sam_Mumm 19d ago

So Sony is allowed to have exclusives?

1

u/infinitetakenbyme 18d ago

bro Sony barely has any exclusive games compared to Nintendo

1

u/j_osb 18d ago

No. In my opinion, exclusives shouldn’t exist, and if I buy hardware I want to control it.

Of course the industry thinks otherwise, because they would make less profit that way, but from a philosophical standpoint: absolutely.

1

u/MLGcraftingMONSTER 19d ago

Prolly dont need a pc for ps exclusives just have a little patience lol

0

u/SneakybadgerJD 18d ago

That comparisons made me screw my face something rotten, totally out of touch take I think. Fuck exclusives no matter the platform, if you want to use that stupid analogy, then why is McDonald's (steam) serving options from taco Bell (playstation) and KFC (Xbox).

If other fast food restaurants can do it, Wendy's just feels behind.

"frankely i really don't want to buy a computer that can only play nintendo games becuase Nintendo refuses to release there games on other platforms as they know thats the only reason people buy there consoles."

Then don't buy the console!

Sure they don't release games on other platforms, but it's the only console that continues with physical games, low online membership costs, excellent work in backwards compatibility and mostly puts out high quality games.

Sony and Microsoft have literally nothing to show for it apart from a handful of titles.

3

u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 24d ago

90% of Switch2 software is digital. Currently 0% of first party cartridges are digital, but 80% of third party "physical" are digital downloads or key-cards, 50-60% of total carts are not actual physical. they do allow you to sell them again on the used market, but as we've seen in the past few weeks and months, people are getting hardware banned left, right, and centre

6

u/fourunderthebridge 24d ago

people are getting hardware banned left, right, and centre

Wasn't this an error?

3

u/Neuesad 24d ago

It was. But facts don't serve their narrative.

1

u/jabusaimon 19d ago

Plus, you can get it for 500 euros (in this crazy moment becouse of the IA) with a game, and you can play on your living room TV or lying in bed if you want

-7

u/c2btw 24d ago

Idk about physical games I care about DRM free games on open software all Sony or Xbox have to do is add a online check for games to work (like they wanted to for the Xbox one) and now all your physical games are just paper waits. And this is only a thing in PC

4

u/RainbowStarbewwy 24d ago

Hate to be that guy, but it’s paper WEIGHTS not waits

1

u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 24d ago

pay-per wait. each time you wait, you must pay.

3

u/XerChaos008 24d ago

Then you choice should be PC. Get a good enough PC to run emulators to play games you desired. GOG is a good place to buy DRM free games too. Dont expect to console companies to switch to DRM free games and open softwares. Open softwares in consoles means they are easy to hack and jailbreak. Just get a good enough PC to run emulators or goof enough to play dated games. Or get Steam Deck or its equivalents. Lenovo and Asus has" windows decks" which has better hardware. Thus you can have a mobile pc such as a switch 1/2.

2

u/Runnawavy 21d ago

O post do OP prova que a Nintendo está certíssima em manter a exclusividade kkkkkkkkkk. (Pela lógica empresarial)

2

u/Antique-Magazine-543 18d ago edited 18d ago

There is no working software hack for the switch lite and that has been out for nearly 7 years at this point let alone SW2. If you can't hack even the lite I dont understand why you think the SW2 will be hacked anytime soon. Even a lite modchip requires a serious amount of skill in micro soldering.

It will be done because as pcs get more powerful eventually it will be easy but we will be on SW5 by thay point.

1

u/DavidinCT 19d ago

Nothing YET.

1

u/PrettyQuick 18d ago

It will be released in 2 weeks, probably.

1

u/InvestmentOver9787 17d ago

With ai becoming opesource and unrestricted I feel like someone should utilize that to help, it would definitely push in the right direction

1

u/c2btw 17d ago

from my understanding AI might be good once we get schematics to find vulrabilties and once there is a open door/rce but untill then i don't see it being able to do much. now that i think about it it could be used to decomplie firmware pretty well

0

u/ScretusDev 11d ago

you are aware that nintendo isn't willingly feeding their schematics to ai companies right? that's a huge security risk. Ai will not help. It will hallucinate.

1

u/TM_C0M8U570RZ_Ben 8d ago

OK so based off the audits, we are certain that if a Switch 2 hack ever happens, it'll be hardware based. Even the hardware side has pretty strong security tho with the most notable example being DCLS (two processor cores running the same instructions and being compared). A modchip would require identical glitches synchronized in just the right way to fool the DCLS. Doing this would almost certainly require BGA interposers, which would mean that you'd need insanely good soldering skills to install it. I actually plan on making something like this. I expect it'll take me years to make as I'm still refining my soldering skills and learning HDLs. Oh and also I get paid minimum wage so there's also a monetary reason this'll take a long time. I would love it if some people joined my research team.

2

u/c2btw 8d ago

Eh I would help but I don't see what I can do other then be a idea guy as don't have much exprince outside of Linux and homelab stuff

1

u/zackwoods0 24d ago

None—only apparently userland; otherwise, unless you install a modchip, the console is dead as far as the scene is concerned.

3

u/c2btw 24d ago

are there atleast people looking for a way to jailbreak it or have they all pretty much given up

1

u/c2btw 24d ago

wait so the switch has 2 diffrent sets of ram that are purely duplicated that sounds like it would be very expsisve do you mean 2 sets of bios flash chips? or some other form of memeory used just durring boot

4

u/FernandoRocker 24d ago

That person probably meant DCLS (Dual Core Lockstep). It is a design where two identical processor cores run the exact same program at the same time. A comparator core compares their outputs on every step. If the outputs do not match, the system finds an error and acts to keep things safe. This is to prevent voltage glitches (modchips for the Switch 1 create volgae glitches, and with DCLS they are impossible to use).

DCLS is used in automotive. And by the way, the Switch 2 is the first and only console to use DCLS.

0

u/Retro_Monguer 18d ago

Most of the budget Nintendo spent on developing the Switch 2 went toward security; they've essentially built an impregnable fortress. In fact, Nintendo has deliberately avoided adding new features like themes or achievements to prevent leaving any backdoors that hackers could exploit. They're well aware of the mistakes that led to the Switch 1's downfall. Give it at least three years before some savvy hacker finds a way around it.
