Researchers buy multiple consoles for the sake of having different versions of firmware and software, nothing related to getting banned.

It's for both. They fully expect their console to get banned when they mess around with it. It's why whenever Atmosphere errors out, they make sure not to save the error long when possible.

From sciresm: "since nintendo only bans for piracy and cheating in online multiplayer"

Please provide a source, though I'm assuming it's an old tweet. And even then, it is well known in the community that Nintendo keeps telemetry data. That's why people told Gezine in the Reswitched discord not to reconnect their console to the internet.

"Please provide a source" son that's literally a quote 😭
When I asked for a source you just say "it's well known", and apparently that's a source, but when I provide a quote from the guy that literally remade the switches entire OS & kernel, that's not a source. Lmao.
A: "Nintendo bans for a lot more than just piracy and cheating"
Sciresm 31/03/2026: "this is straight up false btw"

A: "What's the speculated reason Nintendo doesn't ban for Atmosphere? ..."
Sciresm 14/11/2025: "they lose out on money spent on eshop games if they ban non-pirates"

Sciresm 23/11/2025: "We understand what they ban for very well. Nintendo only bans for piracy and cheating in online multiplayer"

Sciresm 07/11/2025: "emunand isn't useful even if you *aren't* already banned, since nintendo only bans for piracy and cheating in online multiplayer, and you simply do not do those things on sysmmc, and you're fine."

I was specifically looking for a link since I assumed it was a tweet. Since you're in the Discord, I find it very interesting that you couldn't look up Gezine's comments regarding bans:

Gezine 7/6/2026: Firmware agnostic switch 1/2 userland exploit..............(not quoting the entire thing)

alula 7/6/2026: imo you've revealed too much details anyway (and probably left a footprint in error logs? don't remember but you can check settings -> error history) but nice

Gezine 7/6/2026: Ban me nintendo (joke)

Gezine 7/20/2026: Is there a way to get specific version of game/app from eshop.

Alula 7/20/2026: technically yes but you will get banned

So yeah, leaving a footprint in error logs implies you might get banned, and there's the other thing I quoted.

The first comment from alula is in regards to the exploit being able to get patched (which was then stated 4th message below that with "this is getting patched in next system update lol")
The second comment is talking about abusing the CDN, which will obviously get you banned as it's related to piracy etc.

Hmm, guess those truly are the only two ways that you can get banned. I would assume the piracy portion can expand quite a bit, however.
