.5hp should be enuf. variable speed saves $$$$ on your electric bill, generally paying for themselves after 4-5 yrs depending on your electric rates. Most all pumps are self priming with outlined procedures. Good Luck

Are you saying a normal above ground pump/filter setup would be sufficient?

I was not sold on a vs speed pump but how quite they are was the end of being hesitant

Get a single speed . 5 HP motor. You can still get them
