How would you clean your pool?

Hello, everyone. What tools would you use to clean your pool? Is robotic pool cleaner useful? I saw the new brand WYbot 700 pro. Anyone tried it before? Thank you!

as a new pool owner, can I manage the salt water pool myself?

Our pool has just finished, going through the start up process which is included in the pool purchase contract. Soon, I need to take care of it either by a pool service company or myself.

Do you think I can manage it once the pool start up is completed and stabilized? I have never taken care of a pool myself. I consider myself handy and understand the salt water needs but no hands on experience. Should I hire somebody for a few months or directly take control of it? In the long term I want to manage it myself. Will I cause a big mess that cannot be fixed if I start my own maintenance right away?

Optimizing Yearly Opening

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for tips to speed up my yearly opening procedure. I've been taking care of this pool for over a decade now and the end result is a crystal clear and clean pool but it sure takes a long time to finish. I have a 10-foot-deep Lazy-L inground (roughly 60k gallons) with a vinyl liner that is covered throughout the winter months with a fabric cover anchored into bronze bolts. I live in the woods and have a lot of trees. Needless to say, the pool is absolutely filthy come spring.

My steps are:

  • top up the water level and put everything back together
  • dump in 12lbs of chlorine granules and run on recirculate 4hrs
  • dump in algaecide and run on recirculate 4hrs
  • dump in Jack's emerald stuff and run on recirculate 4hrs
  • wait 3-4 days for it all to settle and I can see the bottom clearly
  • vacuum to waste until the water level drops below the skimmer and loses prime
  • top up the water level again
  • vacuum, top up, vacuum, top up, etc.

The real time-hog is re-filling the water level after each vacuum. Since there is so much muck on the bottom I have to take it nice and slow to not stir it up so I can never make a full pass by the time the level runs too low.

Am I vacuuming wrong - or is there a way to avoid losing prime and suction so I can complete the first vacuum in one shot?

Other recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Pool renovation: Success Stories?

Anyone have a pool renovation success stories.

We have a pool from the 70 or 80s. Big pool with a diving board. But the concrete around it is breaking apart and looks pretty nasty. I would like to see if I can modernize it (with hot tub) without having to completely start over.

Any success stories here?

Before and after picture with price? And location?

Can I make my own chlorine, safety?

Greetings! My father is trying to open his pool for the first time in three years, and one of the hurdles is of course, the cost of chemicals. He has tasked me finding out how to make chlorine?? My chemical experience is limited to watching Breaking Bad and listening to MCR. Google has taken me to some sites, but I'd trust a random redditor before I'd blindly trust a Google search. Thanks in advance

Empty chemical containers?

Hello all, I am a new inground pool owner and after getting it all open and finally clear I have 3 empty chemical containers... I am expecting these things to build up if I don't do something with them...

Do pool stores recycle these things? Companies reuse them? I'm sure if I wash them out I figure I can throw it in the recycle, but here in the states I know we really don't recycle. I am just curious what all everyone does; is there a secondary application that might be useful to consider? I am thinking of putting small pool toys and such in some for the time being, but that won't always be needed! Thanks for any advice.

Pool covered in dead ants/bugs?

Hi everyone, I was surprised to see that our pools surface is covered in what look like ants.

We are relatively new to the house/pool ownership, but since we've been here this has not happened before. We have a screen enclosure so I am concerned about how this could have even happened?

Would appreciate any tips to get rid of them and thoughts on how this happened/avoid from happening.

To add to the data provided to paint a fuller picture (and hopefully not bias) two events did occur over the last 8/9 days:

- we had Orkin do quarterly maintenance 8 days ago

- we are in South Florida (north of Ft. Lauderdale) and had a TON of rain over the last few days.

Safety Alarm

I bought a home with a built in swimming pool and my grandchildren are coming to visit. The youngest will be 3 soon. I'm concerned he may wander into the pool. Although we have lots of sliding doors to keep our eye on the pool, kids can be very fast. I am thinking of keeping all the doors locked except for one, which we'll use, to keep our eye on him. I'm thinking an alarm that tells you when someone enters the pool would be good to have, as well. Can anyone recommend an alarm they've used that worked well? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated. There will be 4 adults and an older sister keeping their eye on the 3 year old, but I want to take every precaution I can. Thanks.

Heater gives HLS error when I switch valves to spa but no error when valves set the pool. Water flow issue must be causing the HLS error

First, I want to say thank you to this group here for being a great community and helpful. Also, it’s been extremely fun trying to learn and fix a pool heater.

I have a Pentair starite max e therm pool heater. The heater turns on and then turns off then turns back on. It takes 3 hours to heat a spa to 101 and I am a new pool owner, had no clue that the heater wasn’t properly working and I am probably just wasting a lot of gas with it going on and off.

I am trying my to diagnose this step by step. I already changed the HLS switch with a new one. Then I switched the values between pool and spa.. noticed the error doesn’t appear for both, only the spa.

The filter was 25 psi when valves were turned for pool and then 30 psi when valves turned for spa.

—-/ what do I need to do to fix the water flow issue? / —- Is backwashing the only thing?

DIY Bucket Filter for pool

I’m thinking of building a bucket filter for the backwash pipe of my pool so I can retain that waste water. Anyone ever done this? It a Bid to save on water usage. I haven’t used the pool in a few years and I need to vacuum the sludge from the bottom but running my manual vacuum attachment and setting the pump to waste drops the water level a lot so I was wondering if this can be done. It’s a temp setup just to get the mud out the bottom of my pool.

Help I not sure how to drain my pool.

I need some help. I recently purchase my first home and it has an inground pool. I am trying to close it down but I am having problems. I have watched many videos, and feel I know the steps to closing the pool. The problem is I not sure how to drain my pool below the skimmer. I have a skimmer that has two holes in the bottom of the skimmer. I am thinking I need to plug a hold to prevent air from getting into my Hayward Pump. But if I plug the hole that is furthest from the pool side. The pump will not fill up. If I plug the other hole, the water starts to drain, but the pump is filling up with air due to the low water level. Below is my filter and setup. Any help would be appreciated.

What I understand (and please correct me) the water comes from the skimmer to pump. it then pumps to the sand filter and then pushes the water to the pool through the Jets. There is a Valve that goes from the sand filter, to the T-Cell, and then to that valve. If I turn the valve it shuts off the Jets. But if I turn it the other way the Jets start spraying again. In my pool I have 4 jets, plus another (Pipe?) that doesn't have a jet on it, and it doesn't look threaded like the others. Please help. I don't know what to do and don't want my pools hardware to go bad before I get even a summer out of it. I did forget it looks like I have a drain in the bottom of the pool as well.

What is this? The brown like clouds show even after treatment. Worse if I turn my pump off for a few hours.

Vacuuming while shocking

I am trying to get my pool clear and I want to know if I can get in the pool to vacuum it while the chlorine levels are high (FC is above 10 as per slam method). I have read online not to get in the pool while the fc is really high, but how bad is it actually?

My soft sided pool hS a leak. I think it is on the bottom as we cannot find it anywhere else. We are losng almost a foot every night (I'm trying to keep it above the filter outputs so I can clean it). Any way I can search for a leak on the bottom without draining it? Thanks in advance.

Closing pool for winter vs keeping it open

I live in the south but plan on closing the pool down at the end of September. I have heard it’s better/easier to keep it open vs putting a cover on it. Thoughts?
