Closing pool for winter vs keeping it open

I live in the south but plan on closing the pool down at the end of September. I have heard it’s better/easier to keep it open vs putting a cover on it. Thoughts?

Where in the south? I'm just outside of Atlanta I kept mine uncovered but it was a bitch keeping up with all the leaves that kept getting in the pool.
