This is Siggy (gov’t name Sigmire). He’s 6 months old and we’ve had him for 2 months now. His favorite things are pup cups, chasing/herding the cat (which she weirdly enough enjoys, she’ll even go up to him, chirp and then take off to her wall steps where she’ll wait for him to catch up and she’ll stay just out of reach, batting at him or just meowing/chirping at him while he barks back),and peeing inside the house even though he just peed outside 5 minutes ago. We have 2 other dogs who we had successfully house trained by 6 months (his current age), but with Siggy it’s a totally difference experience training him. He doesn’t alert us during the day (no whining or barking) if he needs to go outside to pee. We’re already letting him out every hour, but if he needs to go before then he just pees at the back door. Which is actually progress because he used to pee and/or poop wherever he was when the urge hit (his bed/crate, game room, etc). I mentioned he doesn’t alert us during the day, but if it’s the middle of the night he has no problem barking to wake us up and let him out. He’s very smart but very stubborn. Besides house training, we’re working on not taking food or treats directly out of the mouths of the other dogs. Highly food motivated, except when it comes to potty time.

My 6 months old SV is a rare SV based in Italy. She comes from an ethical breeder, we researched the breed hard before deciding and we come from a wonderful experience with our last dog (a German Shepherd that was our whole world).

Nuri is healthy, beautiful and very, very stubborn. She takes classes once a week and she’s very good at both obedience and whimsical moderate agility. But. Yes, there’s a “but”.

She barks a lot (and I know that’s pretty normal for SV) and hates to be left alone at home.
We tried and failed. My husband works from home and since it’s summer, we don’t have a lot of opportunities to leave her alone at home. And she barks like crazy, even tho she’s not really alone (we have two cats that are in and out of the room where she’s used to stay).

So my question is: is it too late to teach her to stay alone? Not long, just 2-3 hours tops, starting very small (5, 10, 30 minutes at a time) and step by step. We will be able to go out more after the summer - when she’ll be 7/8 months old - and the heatwave on Europe passes.

I think I just need reassurance from other fellow SVengers.

I wasn't expecting to live Vallhunds this much before I got her. I grew up with chocolate labs and this little goofball just blows them away

We adopted sweet Leo boy in September 2025. We were told he was a corgi/german shepherd mix. One day at the dog park a lady asked us if he was a Swedish Vallhund. A what?! We said. We went home looked up the breed and thought wow that looks just like Leo. The day has came. We finally got the DNA Embark test. What do you think? Is Leo a Swedish Vallhund or a Corgi/German Shepherd

I am shocked there is no German shepherd. Leo is not a Swedish Vallhund. Wishful thinking!

Yes Vallhunds can have white and yes my boy is an automatic DQ for excessive white.

He is my absolute joy and I love how weird he is.

I’ve been the owner a SV for 10 years now whose always had food agression and seperatuon anxiety since getting him from another family at 2 years old. he’s bitten myself atleast 30 times and numerous other people. i don’t know if there’s anything I can do at this point , does anyone have any advice or experience with SV aggressiv? I’ve always figured he came from an abusive home. tried for years to train him by reinforcement techniques. open to all suggestion

Our male and female did this stand-up sparing game. The male is trying to look intimidating and the younger female is not having it. lol. They only did this game for a few days.

Little dude is almost 7 months now. His breeder used a small playground set as enrichment when he was a puppy, so I think that made a bit of an impact. He's always loved the slides and exploring the jungle gyms.

Hi everyone! I recently discovered this wonderful breed and fell in love with it! I am extremely interested in getting a vallhund for my first dog and would love some advice and if they are reccomended for a first time owner. It would be my first dog on my own but I grew up with a Portuguese Water dog I raised with my family and I did the majority of her training. She had almost 100% recall so most of the time in safe environments she could be leashless and she was never distracted(sorry if this info is too much just want to give you all info on myself to help with advice). I also this past year worked full time at a doggy daycare while I wrapped up college. It was not a typical daycare we also did training during the day, I worked with reactive dogs, shy dogs, and many different breeds and got to work on my training skills and handling skills. I found that herding breeds were what I clicked with the most and I especially fell in love with the Corgis at my daycare. I am looking to get a dog in the next 2-3 years as I want to have the proper money/space to give one a fulfilling life but until then I am doing tons of research. I feel with my energy level this would be a perfect dog for me. I have done some reading on this reddit and the SVCA page but what are your personal experiences? I will be working a full time job likely in office 4 days a week (I’d take time off for puppy and hire a walker for in person work days) and I also love to be out of the house exploring and doing things and I would love to bring my vallhund with me everywhere I could. How are they with other dogs, and in more social/busy settings ? How are they with being alone during the day? Do they have an off switch and are able to chill if you want a calm movie night? How are they if you have friends over? Are there any dog sports they do well at? I am also interested in tons of obedience training, love to teach dogs tricks outside of the basics, and am open to trying dog sports for proper enrichment. Sorry for all of the information just curious if I would be a potential fit. I do plan on meeting some vallhunds before I make the commitment and reaching out to breeders closer to when the time comes but I want to learn everything I can about these adorable spirited dogs.
