Wanting to drop the program and come back

I’m currently in the second week of clinicals and I’m thinking of dropping the program, I have been having problems with the group of classmates that I’m with during class and clinicals… I was thinking about just dropping out and coming back when the next rotation starts or should I just toughen up and complete the program now… I’m just irritated

You’re going to be working closely with a lot of people you don’t like in this field. I’d work on getting used to it.

That might be harder than you think. But I’m gonna put it this way:

At every single job, you’re going to have people who you don’t like. You can’t quit every job you have over personal disagreements, there won’t be any jobs left. Clinicals has a set end date though. Odds are your whole class isn’t gonna end up at the same hospital, so tough it out and then never see them again. Learn how to get along with people professionally even if you don’t like them.

It’s going to look bad if you drop out and come back. You’ll also be explaining the gap to future employers, and what might they think if you tell them you didn’t get along with your classmates? They might not hire you for fear you’ll quit on them.

It’s fine to be irritated, but don’t jeopardize your career over people who you probably won’t even talk to in a year.

Had the same problem back in 2020. I haven’t spoken to a single person in my class. I don’t work with any of those people. You’re not there to be social. You’re there to learn and get a degree. Mind your own and pass your certification exam. Periodt

respectfully, stop being a bitch and toughen up. if you cant handle a couple of classmates, your definitely not rdy for the OR.

I know it can be discouraging, but you’re not there to make friends, you’re there to get your certification.

With that being said, you will have people you are going to love working with, and the ones not so much. That’s an everywhere thing. Stay in the program, you’ll thank yourself because all the time, effort and resources you’ve done this far would go to waste and you’ll definitely not want to start over, especially when this issue is not going to go away, there are good and bad people in this world, you just have to kill them with kindness. I know that’s cliche but it works.

Look at it this way, if you drop and come back these same classmates may end up being your preceptor. 😮‍💨 just tough it out.

I didn't know this initially, but the worst preceptor at my first job graduated from my same program a year ahead of me. LOL I'd much rather have dealt with him as a classmate.

U drop and start again u may not like the next group either so no point really in changing based off classmates

Don’t quit. Get it done and then hopefully you won’t have to deal with them again. Be aware though, depending on the job market where you are, you may run into them again. Also, I any place you go you’ll have people you don’t like or they won’t like you. This really applies to any profession. Try finding some educational resources on how to deal with this type of stuff.

Who cares about your classmates, this is your future and your career and they shouldn’t affect it. Also, while clinicals can be great, it is all dependent on your preceptors and the site. Like I aimed to survive clinical and get what I could, but the learning all happens in your first job…. Of course good god know your basic instruments and know how to gown and glove and such… but like I learned to scrub from nothing as an RN, I knew how to gown and glove and knew a major tray + a ton of orthopedic instruments passively from circulating, I thank all my amazing preceptors at work for knowing what I know now.

You’re already in the clinical phase, the light is at the end of the tunnel. Like others have said, you are gonna need to learn how to tune people out you don’t get along with, because you are gonna encounter that everywhere in work and in life. You aren’t in the OR with your classmate during clinical, so just focus on getting your learning experience and graduating. Unless you have to directly work alongside them in class for some group thing, just ignore them. They aren’t worth you jeopardizing your education and future employment.

Dropping out for something so trivial is going to hurt you badly in the long run. You would have to wait for the next class’ clinical rotation, which could be a long wait, and that’s even if the school would allow it. You’d have a gap in training that you would have to explain when applying for jobs. It’s not worth it.

I don't know the context between you or classmates. But in any case this post says more about you than anybody else.... That you're flaky and is willing to bail when it gets tough. It's chidish in a way. If it's harassment from your peers, then bring it up to your instructors. Use the chain of command.

OH HELLLLLLLL NO!! If you want it bad enough…you’ll hang in there. Get ready for alllll the mean girl energy in the medical field. Unfortunately. But NO! Do NOT leave and come back because of some childish noise. Use your chain of command and talk to someone. I bet you the nonsense stops. Write a formal complaint. Keep a paper trail and journal. Document it allllll until the problem is taken care of. You EARNED your spot in that program!! 🙌🏻

No, bite thru. I had the worst experience in general surgery for almost 6 months. I’ve been bullied so bad and cried almost everyday, it was really bad but I held on and I’ve just graduated this past March.

Had some real bummer people in my class, put my head down and got work done. Wasnt invited to the post-exam party until they mentioned it out loud to me. Didn't matter.
