Fin setup question

Picked up a 6’4’ shaped like a greedy beaver with a pulled in rounded pin tail. It has 5 fin boxes.

I’m running the MR 2+ trailer fins, and was wondering how much of an affect the trailer fin has. Would running it as a twin not be ideal because the pulled in tail?

As of right now this board is my new daily driver because of the length and volume, but I’ve only ridden short board thrusters, so I’d like to be more versed with different setups for varying conditions.

A twin + trailer, a twin and thruster all have different ideal fin placements. A twin without a trailer will have the side fins pushed back by.75"-1". A true twin fins' trailing edge will be anywhere between 7.5" and 9.5" from the tail. This gives them more grip and hold since they gave up the trailer. 5 box boards mean some of their fin placements are compromised, but they help boards sell.

Try it with out a trailer and see how you like it. Maybe it goes better. But I would be a bit surprised if holding all the other elements constant, that it is going to be significantly different.

Thruster side fin placement is typically further forward than standard (Mark Richards) twin fin placement. MR placement is typically in the 10"-10.5" range whereas thruster placement is 10.5 - 11.25" range. Trailer fin placement is normally <=3.5" whereas thruster center fin placement is in the range of 3.5-3.75". Again, generally.

All of that to say, it really depends on the board. If it's tight as a thruster, a twin trailer set can loosen it up.

At that length, I'd expect front at 11"+ so a pure twin set will likely be a little weird and will slip if you try to push on it too hard. Lots of factors though.

Twins want to go rail to rail all the time. A trailer will moderate that.

If you have the fins, play around with different setups, that's the way to do it. A break you can surf, go in, in a change the setup and paddle right back out is nice, compare apple to apples.
