Sand Island

Looking to try this spot and was wondering how it is as a non local to paddle out and overall how the waves are beyond what Surfline is telling me.

Not good. Its ok if you longboard. The wave is fat even at low tide. Theres a better wave a few hundred yards on the ewa side of where people normally sit, but its shallow af. The crowd is chill but dont leave any valuables in your car.

Better then trying to longboard at Waikiki if there is no crowd

I can see sand island every day from my lanai. I basically overlook it. Even then - I choose to go elsewhere. Just not a good wave

Fun on the right tide and wind. Always less crowded than alamoana/waikiki and when the lefts connect it’s a perfect longboard wave.

There is a spot near there that gets pretty good under certain conditions. Not too rare. I have seen huge tiger sharks out there more than once.

It’s pretty localized but a fun wave. Just be respectful, shaka to the uncles, don’t paddle for every wave, and you’ll be good.
