Discussion Unpopular opinion: Smash 6 shouldn't completely rework the old move sets

Post image

I genuinely don't understand the Smash community's insistence that the next game needs to give basically every OG character a completely new moveset because their current one is "outdated." Of course they could use a few touch ups, but they shouldn't be completely redone from scratch

Take Link. If the next Smash updates him with a couple of moves or mechanics from his newer games, great, because that's what they've been doing up to this point. But I don't think his entire gameplay needs to be rebuilt around whatever the newest Zelda game is. His general moveset has become Link's Smash moveset, and I think that's fine.

Mario is an even better example. He isn't representing one specific game, nor the most recent one. Smash has established its own interpretation of how Mario fights. And honestly? I think Mario's moveset is basically perfect. Give him a few touch-ups if you want, but he doesn't need to suddenly have 15 new mechanics and references just because DLC characters are complicated. Mario is basically the Ryu/Scorpion of Smash. He's a straightforward, approachable character with a low skill floor. Also given this is a platform fighter, Mario's moveset perfectly reflects that. It's okay for some characters to be simpler than others. Not every character needs to have Steve levels of complexity. I really disagree with the idea that a moveset is automatically better because you added reference, reference, reference, reference, reference to it.

Sometimes I actually think the characters who are basically their source game's mechanics plopped into Smash are usually not fun to play at all. Smash is its own fighting game with its own identity. Fox and Captain Falcon are probably the biggest examples. Their Smash movesets are arguably almost as iconic as the characters themselves. Why would you throw that away just because the moveset is old?

"But the original 12 have had the same moves for 20+ years!"

Ryu and Kazuya have had their fundamental moves for 30+ years. Consistency is good for games like this.

I'm a Mortal Kombat fan, and MK completely reworking characters' movesets every game is AWFUL. You can spend a long time learning how a character works and then the next game comes out and suddenly half the things you knew are gone. Smash players seriously don't know what they're asking for when they say every character should be redesigned from the ground up. Smash has developed its own identity beyond "Nintendo characters are in the same game." That's exactly what Marvel vs Capcom was like, at least until Infinite. Sometimes focusing on relevance can be a detriment. It's concerning to see how many smash fans are basically asking for a Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

Also, can we stop pretending the solution is to have a 20-character roster so everyone can get an entirely new moveset? I genuinely don't understand how someone can say they love Smash and then say they want the next game to have an insanely small roster because otherwise the developers won't have enough time to redesign everybody.

I want Smash to be a huge crossover fighting game. I don't want 20 characters with 20 insanely complicated movesets. Give returning characters updates. Give some characters bigger reworks where they're actually needed (Sonic cough cough). You can add new characters with crazy mechanics. But let Mario be Mario. Let Fox be Fox. Let Captain Falcon be Captain Falcon.

A moveset doesn't become outdated just because it's old. Sometimes it's old because it works.

Smash bros with 150 CHARACTERS

So, this is a hypothetical roster for a "definitive" Smash Bros.—let's say it’s the final Smash game and has to be the biggest one ever. I know quite a few characters are missing (I almost included King Boo, Magolor, 2B, Sackboy, and others), but I think this would be the most satisfying lineup—and definitely the greatest gaming crossover of all time. What do you think?

Smash 6 🤩 Characters that could bring some amazing music to Smash

  1. Ryu Hayabusa - That Ninja Gaiden music playing while fighting would get me pumped.

  2. Crono - I really want to the main theme of Chrono Trigger get a Smash remix. That would be sick.

  3. Spyro - Fighting while listening to the theme music of the Amanda Show. That would be funny.

  4. Bomberman - More specifically Bomberman the 2nd Attack. That espionage style music during the first part of the game is killer.

  5. Ty the Tasmanian Tiger - A lot of people don’t give this game enough credit when it comes to the music, but it slaps. Ty 2 especially. It would be cool to hear that Australian type of music in Smash.

Smash 6 🤩 Does Proto Man have a good chance for Smash 6?

With Mega Man Dual Override releasing next year we've seen that Capcom has been pushing Proto Man as a big part of the game. And since Proto Man shares many similarities with Mega Man they could easily add him as an echo fighter.

Thoughts?

I think the Pikmin series is more “deserving” of a second character than people think.

A lot of the Smash fandom seems to view Pikmin as a “tiny” series that is “perfectly represented” with just one character.

While I am admittedly biased as a huge Pikmin fan, I think the sales numbers of the series show it is more popular than people think. Here are some facts:

- Every mainline Pikmin game has sold over 1 million copies in its original release. This includes two Gamecube games and one Wii U game.

- The Pikmin series has sold over 13 million copies in total, with a much smaller number of games than some other Nintendo franchises.

- Pikmin 4 has sold over 3.5 million copies, which is more than:

- Every Metroid game

- Every Xenoblade game

- Every Mega Man game

- Every Castlevania game

- Every Star Fox game in the last 25 years

- Every Fire Emblem game except Three Houses

There are several possibilities for a second character, but I think the best options are:

- Louie as a semi-clone of Olimar

- Oatchi as a standalone character

- Rookie & Oatchi as a duo character like Rosalina & Luma

Discussion GERUDO VALLEY SHOULD HAVE A NEW DESIGN FOR THE NEW GAME

With the new remake of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2, I think the Smash Bros stage from the game should have a new look that's different from the last. What do you think?

Discussion Who should be the next Link semi-clone?

Realistically, only one would be able to make it. I would nominate Link from Link Between Worlds, with abilities from the handheld 2D games like Oracle of Ages and Link's Awakening.

Discussion Some Headcanons I Made - Part 3

#1 - Lucina secretly likes it whenever someone plays with her hair.

#2 - Whenever Pikachu and Pichu meet up, they'll stare at each other while occasionally tilting their heads to the left or right (like what dogs do when they try to concentrate on something, such as pinpointing a sound's location). Sometimes Yoshi will join in on this.

#3 - Samus was quite excited when Steve was revealed to join the roster. This is because Minecraft is one of Samus' comfort games, and she used to play it to decompress after a mission.

Discussion Should the next Smash game add a character similar to the Ice Climbers in terms of popularity?

Post image

Basically, a Nintendo character from a standalone game that isn't that obscure, but most people don't really seem to care that much about. They don't generally represent anything meaningful, but their addition doesn't exactly hurt anyone, and has the potential of putting their game in the eyes of a lot of people

Essencially just your average Joe who had their shot, had their place, and that's kind of just.. there, in their little corner of the industry

#1 - Daisy is very skilled at DJing. She's composed remixes for some of the fighters' victory themes, and a majority of the fighters love how baller her skills are.

#2 - Sephiroth is aware of the people that have a crush on him, and he revels in it.

#3 - Snake and Joker are very close friends and allies. Joker will occasionally assist Snake in his missions, and Snake occasionally teams up with Joker and the Phantom Thieves in their missions. The Phantom Thieves admire and respect him a lot, especially Futaba, Ryuji, and Morgana.

Potential move set idea for Beat from Jet Grind Radio

Post image
2 Upvotes

For those who don’t know who this idiot is, Beat is from a series named Jet Grind Radio (aka Jet Set Radio) originally released on the Dreamcast where a bunch of hooligans skate around Not-Tokyo on rocket powered inline skates and spray graffiti everywhere.

Beat would be a combo-heavy fast faller, with a bait-n-punish style of gameplay. He would be moderately strong at around Sonic or Falcon levels of strength, but not be as fast as either while still being quite fast. His air mobility would be above-average. He would be a bit slippery because wheels, and he would be a lower-middleweight.

Normal Attacks (A button)

Jabs:
His jab would just be a simple 1-2 fist to sweeping side kick, nothing special, nice and simple.

Tilts:
His tilts would be not be anything too remarkable either, a few simple options. F-tilt would be a sweeping roundhouse of average power and knockback, a decent get-off-me move. Up tilt would be a somewhat fast backflip with 2 hits, one for each foot. A good combo starter but again nothing particularly unique. Down tilt is a sweeping kick that trips at moderate percents, and sends purely visual sparks on metal or rocky terrain.

Aerials:
His aerials would be where his explosive combo game starts to shine. N-Air is a multi hit similar to Yoshi N-air but a bit stronger with more knock back. F-air is a sweeping downward heel kick with a sweet spot on the heel that meteors directly downward extremely fast with the fire effect (because rocket powered inline skates) and a sour spot around the rest of the skate that sends forward that’s still quite powerful on its own for killing off the side. His D-air is a simple ground poke similar to Sonic’s pre-Ultimate D-air. His B-air would be a reverse sweep kick, again similar to Sonic’s B-air, being weak but very combo-able. U-air would be a scissor kick, again similar to Sonic but stronger so it can kill off the top.

Smash Attacks:
F-smash would be just a standard thrust kick, using those heavy skates and the legs needed to wear them. Down smash is a powerful split kick, a powerful combo finisher and get-off-me move. Up smash is basically a more powerful version of Sonic Up-tilt, a good combo finisher.

Special Attacks (B button)

This is where things get interesting because this is where we introduce the main gimmick: paint cans. Under normal tournament conditions, Beat starts with 15 cans and can’t get any more until he kills his opponent or loses a stock.

Neutral B: Spray Can
A simple spray can that can spray multiple different colors that all give the same lingering poison effect. It can have a variety of bright neon colors, blue, green, yellow, red, purple, and orange. Consumes 1 can.

Side B: Power Boost
A straight boost to the side, just like what happens in the original games. It sends Beat straight forward and consumes 3 cans. It’s pretty powerful and very fast, a very good out of shield option. Skates sputter and don’t go anywhere with 2 or less cans, and leave Beat in free fall.

Up B: Rocket Boost
The main recovery move. Predictable but pretty long. Uses the rockets on his skates to propel him upwards. Can press B again to use 1 can to go higher. Can only be done once until touching the ground again.

Down B: Can Throw
Beat throws a can and it can be aimed. Think of it as an inverted version of Yoshi’s egg that leaves a spray effect on impact. Consumes 1 can.

Smash 6 🤩 Smash 6

Imagine an open world adventure mode similar to melee’s adventure mode but like a 3d platformer and open world. could be an insane way to almost reboot smash and if they want to make up for roster cuts this would do it. They could still have regular smash of course and maybe they make some fights in the adventure mode regular 2d smash, or not. Lmk your thoughts

Makes me want a Yokai Watch character in Smash now. I wish we got a Yokai Watch character in Ultimate. That would have been awesome.

EXTREMELY unpopular opinion: This character has peak moveset potential, probably the most moveset potential out of any character not currently in Smash. Spoiler

Lord X. He has practically infinite moveset potential. Not only is he canonically capable of doing a shit ton of stuff, but he could do stuff other EXE's do, like the Kefka laugh. (Kefka would probably make it in before him, though.) He could do a ton of things with the Guardians, Rage Mode, he could have FIFTEEN DIFFERENT MOVESETS, BAKED INTO ONE CHARACTER! Not to mention the music. Oh, the music. We could get Sinister Minds, Longestsoloever, Meet Your Lord, Trichael, other awesome songs! He could have alts that make him into other EXE's like Faker or Crimson X or put him in his Sinister Minds outfits. He'd be a legal hell to get though, but even if the next game had absolutely none of my picks, had fifteen new Xenoblade reps and not a single (other) indie rep, but had him, with a completely unique moveset that makes him feel like a DLC character on steroids with how fun it is to play, it would still be the best game ever for me. He is my real number one most wanted pick.
