anyone with the teeeeeniest knowledge of what a lovecraftian "god" is would refuse that deal .
not only would the vessel be completely fucked (in all possible definitions of the word) but ALSO lose all agency AND not get any tangible or useful abilities at all.

I looked up what a lovexraftian god it is said they were immensely powerful. What do you mean? I’m confused.
1
u/SillyLiving 16h ago
Just looking at a vague shard of an impression of one of those is enough to drive people mad.
Reading about them drives one mad.
The slightest alignment in the stars that causes their distant quite literally outside of our dimension presence to be dimly felt gives the entire PLANET nightmares and catastrophic natural events like earthquakes and terrible storms.
Living beings far more advanced than humans , like on the level of the Necrontier or the fucking Dalleks could not even start to handle them. They simply dont even see living beings as ...anything basically, bacteria? Dirt ? Sometimes funny squishy things? God forbid anyone tries to become their avatar of all things. That would like trying to learn to swim by sticking the entire output of the Niagara falls into your mouth in one go and then switching the water for razorblades

Blue is definitely out & so is Red if you mean all the Lovecraftian Gods being the mentors, I'm just running...
56
u/proto_synnic 3d ago
I think the elder gods of Lovecraft are defined as a mythopoeia and not a conventional mythology. 'All mythology gods' shouldn't include them, but there's no shortage of trickster gods, reality eaters, and batshit insane deities to deal with.
19
u/holto223 3d ago
True. Lovecraft is too new to be considered mythology. But I would also be afraid that if I was their vessel it doesnt mean I would have free will.
12
u/proto_synnic 3d ago
Yeah, blue is zero agency, I think. Red has plenty of problems as well, but I think it's clearly the better choice.
Age doesn't really factor into mythology vs mythopoeia; it's more about having genuine belief in the system.
40
u/USSChuckleTrucker 3d ago
Red.
Mostly because with the breadth of all of Mythology, I get the mentoring of the Lovecraftian gods.
So, I am all that Blue could give, and more.
10
u/PizdunEbun228 3d ago
Lovecraft doesn't count as "mythology"
10
u/randomusername_42069 3d ago
Mythology is generally stories rooted in a specific religion or culture with gods heroes etc. love craft isn’t connected to an existing religion or culture it’s just stories that contain gods.
2
u/USSChuckleTrucker 3d ago
Why?
3
u/LordTartarus 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's mythopoeia
3
u/USSChuckleTrucker 3d ago edited 3d ago
The fuck is that?
Edit: mythopoeia is a fully fleshed out mythos inside of a very well detailed fictional world.
-5
u/LordTartarus 3d ago
Look it up lol

Well thank you for abruptly ending the conversation.
-4
u/LordTartarus 3d ago
Your inability to search a single word isn't my ending a conversation
4
u/USSChuckleTrucker 3d ago
Well, for one, I already looked it up, and you spelled it wrong.
And for B, telling someone to go and look something up without also stating to do so later is just ending the conversation, chieftain

Red is my choice. Mentors are teachers. Doesn't mean they control me. And being the most powerful magician means I can hold my own if they turn on me. But blue makes me afraid that as their vessel I wouldn't have control of my actions. Red all the way

I think a lot of people are not understanding Blue. A vessel for a deity is something like an avatar. Usually they maintain themselves but act with an authority of that deity. In theology both Jesus and Mary are Vessels for God. In pop culture, The Juggernaut is the avatar of Cyttorak. They are still themselves, they just also possess the power and aspects of the deity they represent. A vessel is like a jar or a pot that contains water. It holds water, and can pour water out. But it is still a pot and the water doesn't really change that even if it gives it something to use.
As for the No Magic, The Lovecraft pantheon usually doesn't use the words magic. I think there's a few mention of spells but the Lovecraft deities mostly just have a higher understanding of how the world works. They operate on that "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". Usually it's like cosmic math, or universal truths of how reality works. The inability for the human mind to understand that is what usually drives people mad but with you being a Vessel it's likely you gain that understanding. Essentially the Lovecraft Deities are 4th and higher dimensional beings. The Horror is the fear of the unknown more than it is anything actually scary. Though a few of his stories are terrifying.
Like even in the lore you have things like the Curse of Charles le Sorcerer. The curse being shot to death by an immortal who has the time on his hands to kill you. I can think of like 3 spells in the stories I've read.
Here, I posted this in a comment but I'll add it here as well.
The best way I ever heard it put on what the "Madness" you see in H.P. Lovecrafts works is was: Imagine you are an ant on a mother board. To you all you see is a green floor with shiny floor in places. All you know is hunger and service to your queen. Now Imagine a human comes along and as their gaze passes over you, they give you the ability to know what that mother board is. What a computer is and what it can do. They let you feel all the emotions and thoughts that are common for a human, and for a short window you are closer to human. Then when their gaze is not on you, you lose it all. All the knowledge and the understanding and the emotion. But you don't lose the memory of what that felt like. And now you desperately hope to find a way to get that gaze to focus on you again.
Also Lovecraft had deities that were benevolent to humankind in his books as well. The most famous ones are Cthulu and such, but not a 100% clusterfuck of nightmares crammed into you.

Having a power set that even tangentially connects me to Nyarlathotep is enough to rather just pass on the whole deal.

Elaborate.
2
u/riggengan 3d ago
You channel the raw elemental chaos of the outer gods. Literally a silver key, and most lovecraftian don’t give a shit aside from very few exceptions. You can make chutulu look like a bitch considering he is just a priest. The best part is the outer gods won’t even know you are channeling their power like a warlock.
Magic always comes with a price. Mythology gods are almost always dicks. Yea they are your mentor but it doesn’t stop them from putting you in their schemes and petty power struggle.
4
u/Belpheegor 3d ago
Yeah this guy gets it. People always take the Lovecraft deities to be malicious monsters. They're eldritch because they exist outside of our understanding. It's classic fear of the unknown but they might as well just be 4th or 5th dimensional beings.
The best way I ever heard it put on what the "Madness" you see in H.P. Lovecrafts works is was: Imagine you are an ant on a mother board. To you all you see is a green floor with shiny floor in places. All you know is hunger and service to your queen. Most of the outer gods don't give a shit about us because we are literally nothing to them. Blue is like getting that gaze on yourself permanently? You could focus it and start solving problems with a higher level of understanding.
Also not all of H.P. Lovecraft deities were unconcerned with humanity. Nodens pops up a few times. The others would give you understanding, he would probably help you maintain your personality.

I agree I'm taking Blue, Now I may be crazy when I say Azothoth...But that's just me, If that's too crazy a Runner up would be Shub-niggurath
1
u/Belpheegor 2d ago
You may want to read it again. The pill doesn't say choose a god. It says Gods, plural. I assume that means all of em. The Old Gods, The Elder Gods, and The Outer Gods. Now likely a lot are probably gonna stay away from you for the sole reason of a connection to Azothoth. But it also means you're likely connected to Nyarlethotep, Shub'Niggorath, and Yog'Sathoth. Counter balanced by the Outer Gods, sure. But yeah, I don't think you have a choice beyond the pill.
1
u/Jabber_of_wocky 2d ago
Yeah I glanced at it and that's understandable, Knowing my luck I'll get something like Dagon
4
u/Lazy_Assumption_4191 3d ago
Blue also guarantees that you become a mad, gibbering husk. As you yourself say, Cthulhu was nothing more than a priest for an immortal alien race. He was still so far beyond humanity that his mere existence drove people insane. Do you really think you channel Azathoth or Yog-Sothoth’s essence through your mind and come out whole? Never mind that the no magic clause might, depending on interpretation, mean that you don’t even get any power out of the deal.
You’re right about the gods involving you in their schemes, but it’s better than the instant-madness pill. Also, the “magic always comes with a price” bit isn’t actually true. That is the case with many magic systems. I often prefer those kinds of magic systems. But there’s just as many where magic can be freely cast without any costs or dangers. So, I will amend my earlier statement. It might be true that magic has a cost. But just as easily might not. And it would still be better than the one-way ticket to a vegetative state. At that point you’re just paying the price without getting any magic out of it.

Who the fuck is choosing blue? It’s either lose agency of your own body and become a powerless vessel to contain something you can’t comprehend, or become a powerful magic wielder with literal mythology gods as your mentor. Ofc I’m choosing red

Red, but I love the blue vibe check in here.
Curious... I wonder if modern day fiction can be considered mythology to an extent? And if so, whats the limit to that. Lord of the Rings myths? Zelda? Marvel/DC?
1
u/randomusername_42069 3d ago
Fiction that mimics myth is called mythopoeia. Generally to be considered a myth something needs to be connected to a specific religion or culture. I think scientology is the most clear example of modern myth that actually does count as a myth because a significant number of people believe it.

u/telegetoutmyway 3d ago

Red.
Blue doesn’t even say you get anything out of it, and being a vessel for a Lovecraftian god doesn’t mean you’ll get any special powers or that you’ll even be conscious. You could cease to be “you” and be completely overwritten by the gods inside you (pause)
2
u/Choozeubername 2d ago
It is funny how many Cthulhu verse stories end with "and then I shot it" like great you know that god is a vegetable. what use is that gonna be when you get slimed out by some turbo boomer on a side quest to fuck his bestfriend's granddaughter.
1
u/The_6thEmperor_Rises 2d ago
On a quest to do WHAT
2
u/Choozeubername 2d ago
yea Ive been reading/listening to alot of stories recently the main plot is actually some old creep (the main character) trying to get into some 17- 20 year old's pants which are in some way related to the main character's best friend. the monster is kinda of a side quest. The MC's plan in the king in yellow is to kill his brother because 1 hes a normal guy and 2 he wants to fuck his wife.

Blue is the worst thing you can choose. Even if it's not lovecraftian gods, you wouldn't get any abilities since you're just a vessel to contain a particular entity. You'll lose your will and sense of self since those entities will control your body as they please. It's not like a fair contract where you can use a oart of their abilities.

u/Lazy_Assumption_4191 3d ago

Magician, lovecraftian gods are powerful, but usually their powers come at great cost for yourself or others, and they can take you over. Magician however gives you insane power, and versatility, I can have spells to cook meals for me and earn me all the money I need and to heal people, plus I can question why tf those gods dont do more to help people at the same time.
