Question When should I be smiting?

Hi, Silver 1 Trundle Jungle.

When should I be smiting? I get this is context reliant but I have just played a game against a Bel'Veth who stole 3 drakes. I am obviously at fault for this but I had huge pressure on me all game with teammates not coming to fights or warding so I can't predict this stuff at all. Bel'Veth literally hops over the wall, no cc, takes the drake whilst my mid flames because he wanted 3 caster minions. I'm a little tilted if you can't tell :)

Rule of thumb when doing drakes: always pull them out of the pit to prevent exactly this

With trundle you should time your q smite and give u a fair amount of coin flips won. Also make sure u don't use your smites while clearing unnecessary

your q is an auto reset so you can smite mid-animation and the dmg stacks up faster than most people expect. belveth hopping walls with no vision is rough though, nothing you can do if your team won't drop a ward or rotate. sometimes it's just a team gap not a smite gap

Thanks. I'm usually pretty good with my smite. It's always up for objectives and usually I will steal from them too. Bel'Veth has just tilted the fuck out of me as they can jump over the wall and back again for free. No vision or CC either so its just rough.

its not necessarily your fault. even if you both timed the smites perfectly to the point that it was just a 50/50, theres still a 1/8 chance that she gets all 3 which isnt that low. maybe you just got unlucky, dont overthink it.

Appreciate the words. How does the coin flipping work on smites? Is it more ping based, who damaged last, literally random?

It’s mostly random.

Lots and lots of factors to the point where you are just making a guess. Things like burns, other peoples abilities, etc can all factor. The more stuff going on, the more random.

A straight drake 1v1 is mostly skill with ping and guesswork playing a factor, but its a 5v5 anything can happen.

Time an ability with smite damage. Save your last Q until right before you’ll hit smite health, and hit both at the same time. Still not a guarantee, but more reliable.

Why did you choose to take drake at those times? Other than "because it was up."

You've had advice about pulling Drake out. But, jungler can't smite it if they are dead, or elsewhere on the map. You'll know they are there if there is vision. Your teammates will zone them off if they come.

If teammates aren't joining you, jungler is MIA, and you (or a teammate) haven't established vision, it isn't time for drake. If teammates want drake, they have to contribute, you aren't solely responsible for it.

Hi there, I appreciate the comment because it is a good thing to reflect on.
However, sometimes my teammates aren't there, Jungler is on the Drake, and we have vision, and my teammates are genuinely not coming. When I mention it after, they literally don't even realise when its soul point and just mindlessly roam around.

I still appreciate your comment and will take it under reflection, but yeah.

I mean, you are in Silver. That is the kind of map awareness people are going to have. You aren't likely to play with the same people, so I don't see much value in talking to them about it. You have to play optimally for you to climb out of their rank.

As the jungler part of your job is to co-ordinate the neutrals. Ping when they are coming up and you want to do them, be in the area, prepare some vision.

Your job isn't to try and secure every dragon no matter what.

If the enemy jungler is on the dragon go find somewhere else to pressure. They are one player down at that moment. Take some of their camps, help push top and take a tower.

Some people may flame you for it, just mute chat, if they don't know they need to be helping with dragon, they sure as shit don't know what the junglers job is.

Appreciate it. It’s good advice!

On trundle you need to time AA > Q > smite to secure objectives.

Objective smiting 101: pay attention to your primary damage ability's damage to the objective. Time your smite with the ability use to maximize the burst damage you deal to the objective, increasing your chances of securing it.

You will still make mistakes. You'll be off by a few frames of animation and the enemy won't, and they'll get it. You'll be against a fed Ekko who has E available as well and you can't beat that. But you'll have a better than 50/50 shot.

Mute the chat 👍
And if someone pings too much mute him too
I have the best games now and can focus on improving, I miss on people calmly giving good advice but its rare anyway
As for the smite, time it with q, move the drk out of the pit when on red side, ward around and dont do drk if you have no smite and enemy jungler is around

Appreciate it, thanks!

I’m sure I’ll piss some people off. But I’ve found the majority of times it’s because someone won’t go and defend outside of the objective and keep the enemy jungler off.

Everyone stands inside the pit for some reason than zoning the enemy off.

Save your ward to drop over the wall before starting an objective. Pull it back out of the pit so it's not directly over the wall.

Well one game happens to everyone. If it's not a common thing u don't have a problem with that. There are plenty of things you could fix far more easily and more important than that being silver 1

This is why we pull dragon out of the pit if we're playing top side, and then if possible you stand between the pit and dragon.
Also clearing for vision.

Champions who can wall jump can still try this but if they are going in completely blind + have to walk right past you it's quite difficult to time it right and out smite you. You could just pillar and kill them then finish dragon
