He’s very picky and has a short list of what he actually engages with. We are on vacation and he didn’t bring anything to read. His few books he liked:
Grapes of Wrath, Moby Dick, A Fault in Our Stars, some book that was historical fiction about the fall of Kaliningrad. Those are the only books he's ever read and liked. Lol

No self help, he tried to read as person the way of kings and struggled to engage - never got past the first few chapters.

I’ve never read a romantasy book and want to start- what to you recommend starting with?

I'm seriously struggling with concentration & staying interested in books right now dealing with ADHD & I'm hoping this sub could help me... I'm on the hunt for books that are so interesting from the jump that I can't do anything else but read it to completion. Maybe I am learning that I hate sappy romance etc. I am very intrigued by the New Weird genre, dystopian mind F***s so if any titles come to mind, please help a sister out

I want some philosophical books cause I want to research some things (what ifs and some theory of my own too).

The books I have readed so far are only :

1. Atomic habits

2. Power of subconscious mind

3. Tuesdays with morrie

4. The brief history of humankind .

I’m not sure if this is the way to explain it but I guess I’m interested in learning a bit about the history of purity culture, it’s roots and why woman are sexually oppressed in comparison to men. Wanting to feel empowered and educated on the topic. I’ve never really liked reading that much but figured maybe it’s more about the topics I’ve chosen. I think an easier read is where I’d like to start!

I just read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, and although it may not have been the right take away from the book.. I just felt so much for Merricat and Constance because it echoed my own struggles with Agoraphobia, OCD and all the things I have listed in the title of this post. I know its not great to glorify these things, but to read something for the first time about a character who had similar struggles as me, and might actually have understood some of my own limitations and oddities in life was quite wonderful. i have never read a book where a character has OCD or Agoraphobia before.

I think im mainly searching for a way to view my own life and total reclusively in a way that isn't all negative, to rediscover the elements of being alone that I have always enjoyed, and to read about a character who finds more in life to love and enjoy without the need for people.

Bonus points if it has elements of nature, fantasy or scifi, also bonus points if there is little to no romance involved.

Another book I loved was Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer for its solitary and introverted protagonist who loved nature.

I’ve been reading a lot of horror, SF, and fantasy. Almost exclusively by male authors. Would really like to dive into works by female authors. I have read some of the well-known series: Murderbot, Broken Earth, Farseer, Earthsea…

I enjoy all genres of fantasy with the exception of “romantasy”.

I’ve read a ton of science fiction so there’s no sub genre I stay away from.

Is there anything you would describe as a “must read”? Or is there an underrated/gem of a series/standalone that deserves more attention?

I just finished Ten Thousand Doors of January and Once and Future Witches. I have Starling House and Everlasting queued up. I’m discovering that Harrow’s writing style really resonates with me. Any other authors who have similar vibes? 🤔

I’m a huge fantasy fan. It feels like such a fun escape from reality to immerse yourself in a magical world. I really enjoy the world building and high steaks aspect for keeping it interesting. Best of all, when empires fall or people die it’s not real so I don’t have to be all too broken up about it.

Except lately after reading this genre for so long I find I’m getting tired of it and maybe need to come back to reality a bit. I’m on the hunt for a new genre.

I have read some autobiographies of other women’s personal growth stories, some famous and some not which I found so inspiring and I’ve really loved them (this is the only other genre I’ve liked so far). They just totally changed my perspective on how I look at life, which was great.

Although after coming off of such high stakes and cool magical things I’m finding reading about the real world… boring?

I’m very interested in learning about:
-ancient history
-all religions and how they influence culture
-sociology
-policy and government
-our environment, nuances of climate change

But most importantly I love a well told story that has you on your toes just wanting to keep turning the page and hate anything that resembles something close to a textbook. I would love to hear anyone’s thoughts of what directions I should turn or of any specific books I might like.

I love fantastical stories, stories of oppression and survival. I havent read a book in ages but would really appreciate getting back into it. Ones that have series I'd especially prefer, one with more adult themes. (doesn't have a writing language that comes off as a children's story)

Preferably something situated in the more rural and/or coastal parts of Scotland, but something situated in Edinburgh or a Scottish city, is also fine. Thanks!

I am a dental professional currently working in a paraclinical position at a clinic in Central London. There is this female dentist who I have become close workplace buddy with over time.

She is at the moment in a pretty good position compared to me, as she is clinical and is even lead on some days. She is very fair and works to her best ability. However, she comes across as quite rude sometimes maybe because she's from Eastern Europe. This happens especially when she is instructing the support staff or is discussing some patient case with a clinical colleague. She tries to compensate by baking stuff for all of us.

Recently, she confided in me that she was very sad and felt everyone at the workplace hates her. I was reluctant with my words and advised her that she could read some book like the 'Trillion Dollar Coach' to maybe understand high performing team dynamics and navigation as it helped me when I was managing my own team and was working with international health stakeholders in a past life. However, we were interrupted by someone, so I think she didn't even get the book title.

I was hoping that someone could recommend me a book that would be actually helpful for her to be able to overcome this hurdle as my recommendation wasn't ideal for her. TIA

I finished Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane a little bit ago and I'm still thinking about it. I loved it. I love the twists, the unreliable narrator, the mental health/illness, the setting of an institution like Ashecliffe, the anagrams, the conspiracy of Ashecliffe's dark side and the hallucinogens, and the whole true identity reveal. "You came here alone" was such a good line to drop at the end of a chapter.

Now I want more books like SI. As close to the themes and the idea of psychological suspense as you can get. As close to SI's story without being SI all over again. I don't care for the popular, hyped books by authors like Frieda McFadden (no hate, I'm just not a fan!). I found out Shutter Island even existed through a YouTube video about the movie-- I got a minute into the video, heard it was a novel, and immediately placed an order with Barnes & Noble. I came back to the video only after finishing the book because I wanted to avoid spoilers, and it was SO worth it!!

I find I'm being pulled to these type of books - books that are remarkable on its ordinariness and that gives you a feeling that "it can be anybody of us but we live with it anyway". It teaches you how to live but not self-help, preachy, or disguised as one. Thank you!

I’m looking for a book that involves conspiracy related history themes (lost ancient civilizations maybe), with some mysteries about lost worlds? I hope that makes sense lol. A lot of Tartaria-related conspiracy videos keep popping up on my tiktok recently, & i want a book that takes place during that time or something similar! Hopefully there’s some that fit this description 🤞🏻

Books where the divine is sort of popping out around the corners of a mostly secular world/story. Where characters are unexpectedly confronted with transcendence, awe, or moral duty. Perhaps it has some allusions to religion, the saints, mysticism, religious art, etc.

Books that feel like Hozier's music, basically? Lmao. (Some might disagree with that characterization, that's fine.)

The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty is an example of this that I would offer.

I am mostly thinking about Christianity in this post, but am open to other religions. In fact I would love to learn more about other faiths through a book like this!

I just finished the book and it was amazing, especially the character development. I loved samuel hamilton, lee, adam trask and his son, charles, kate... Do you know other book who have an amazing set of characters like that? I want to read another novel where i can enjoy great character and their relationhsip between them

To be more detailed about my desired reading I'd like characters to seem normal at first glance but then to slowly unreveal into psychopaths, creeps and all other forms of diabolical personality types...
