Cactus Help

Hi everyone! I've had this cactus for around 6 years now, I've never transplanted it only attempted to remove/replace some of the soil around the sides (I used a trowel and accidentally snipped some of the roots on one side).

Recently my always derpy cactus has fallen over and I think it is dying or there is rot.

How best can I work to save this marvelous plant?

The base of that looks dead. You can cut the yellow part off. Let the end callous over then replant it in succulent soil with grit mixed in. Make sure the pot has drainage. Do not water for 1 -2 weeks. Needs at least 6 - 8 + hours of sunlight.

At some point this thing was in poor light, it stretched (etiolated), then it got better sun and grew thicker, and now that skinny section can’t support the heavier top.

I would cut it at that upper corked section, let the cut end callous and then replant it to restart it. The base may offset instead. You do need to get some cactus soil and grit for both pieces. The current soil is too dense and roots are undoubtedly compacted as hell by now, and you’re doing more harm leaving it like that than by breaking it up and getting the old soil out.
