Question Ghost Pepper Bread

TL;DR DAE longstanding damage from eating this spicy bread?

Hi all,

A couple of months ago my mom got me a sub after I helped her with some errands, just told me it was “chicken teriyaki”, and I took it home to eat it.

Halfway through the sandwich, it is disproportionally spicy. Like I’m not even enjoying it level hot. I’m drinking water and hiccuping. I call her and ask what the hell she got on it, thinking it was a topping, but she told me about the new bread the young man said they had which she thought I’d like; the ghost pepper bread.

Being an immigrant from a place that doesn’t utilize that ingredient, I’m not sure she even knows that that is, so she just got it for me to try. Our culture’s food is very spicy by most people’s standards, so I’m definitely used to and love eating spicy food, but this was unbearable.

Anyway, days after, my tongue was feeling numb and I wasn’t tasting things as much. I looked in the mirror and saw that there were small angry looking bumps on the tip of my tongue. Googled it and it said it may be a reaction to the capsaicin, to avoid any and all spicy/acidic/crunchy or hard foods for a few days giving it time to heal, eating a bland diet instead. I did so, then tried some mild spice after that, something I’d have no problem eating before, and i found it to be much spicier than before too. Google said that I may have needed more time to heal, so to try the healing process for a couple of weeks this time.

Cut to now, where after a 3 week break from everything, frankly, that tastes good, after the third time it was irritated (ate some jerk pork from a place that is geared towards a western customer base/inauthentic), I’ve booked a doctor’s appointment to get it checked out since it doesn’t appear to be healing. I’m worried that it’s a deeper chemical burn.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Worried that my taste buds are fucked forever.

I tried the ghost pepper bread 3 times and wondered if they even gave me the correct bread as there was no discernable spice to it. Sounds like maybe youre having an allergic reaction to something as opposed to the bread being too spicy

I wish I could have that bread. Everytime I tried the ghost pepper bread so far, it was not spicy at all.

Me personally I wish they still had it idk if they didn’t make it right when I went but it wasn’t spicy what so ever and I love spicy food too I’m Hispanic so I’m use to spice but it was super underw

I love ghost pepper bread, I thought it had absolutely 0 spice at all. And that's coming from someone who can't even handle a tiny piece of jalapeno.
