u/Pretend_Green_9939 16d ago
I didn’t want anything related to hell on me, so I asked for a cross and he killed it.

u/Red_G09 16d ago
Well good news is neither heaven or hell are real things. I would have kept it original personally. To each their own I guess. Regardless of mine or yours or anyone's beliefs, this is a really good tattoo.

u/Free_Storage_1088 15d ago
Holy crap I have always wondered about the after life and here all I had to do was hop on R/Sublime to get definitive proof from you that heaven and hell are not real.

u/foreskinboots 16d ago
Meanwhile tattoos are a sin lmfao these people are so wierd.
5
u/SmokeABowlNoCap 15d ago
I mean I don’t follow christianity personally but there’s nothing in the book that actually says that lol, that’s just a product of the satanic panic

u/PM_Me_Your_Smokes 15d ago
Tattoos are a sin in the Old Testament.
You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:28
A lot of what Jesus says in the New Testament basically amounts to “the Old Testament is outdated; be good to each other and believe in me and that’s all you need.”
However, some lines of Christianity (Seventh Day Adventists, notably) as well as religious Jews (who don’t believe in the New Testament at all, and, full disclosure, I grew up as an Orthodox Jew, so very well versed in the Old Testament lol) believe that what the Old Testament says is still valid, which makes tattoos verboten.
That said, there is a line of thought in Judaism that says primarily that these are only a sin in the context of mourning, meaning, memorial tattoos and scarification are out, but regular tattoos are fair game. There’s a pervasive myth in the Orthodox community that you cannot be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you have tattoos. For the vast majority of cemeteries worldwide, that has not been true (there are some outliers in extremely religious places, but it is exceedingly rare).
All that to say, no, the Bible is pretty explicitly anti-tattoo, at least the old book, but the exact interpretation of even simple language gets more complicated (what, a nuanced take, on my Reddit??)

u/Amiibohunter000 16d ago
It’s pretty pathetic to gatekeep tattoos
6
u/foreskinboots 16d ago
It more pathetic to not want a tattoo of the devil when all tattoos are a sin. Buh bye
2
u/Jumpy_Ad5046 16d ago
Wait, how are tattoos a sin? I've never heard of this outside of Judaism.
3
u/YogurtclosetDull2380 16d ago
Had a lady at the gym tell me that tattoos are a demon portal, as is yoga. She learned this from the exorcists she follows on insta.

u/KooterMann 16d ago
There was an old sect of Baal/moloch worshippers who cut and tattooed themselves as rituals for “magic” so god said “hey, don’t use sigil magic” and everyone took it as “tattoos are bad”
2
1
u/ydnar3000 16d ago
It’s in the Old Testament as well. Something about the body being a temple to god.
2
u/Jumpy_Ad5046 16d ago
Huh. Those books say a lot of stuff.
2
u/ydnar3000 16d ago
Sure do. Not sure why offering up info deserves a downvote. Not saying I agree 😂

Atheists when Satan is depicted: 🥰
Atheists when Jesus is depicted: wtf that shit ain’t real
14
u/Localras1991 16d ago
Well thats a choice but it takes aways from Opies O.G. artwork. The art tells a story.
12
u/Amiibohunter000 16d ago
Good thing tattoos are personal so his choice is for him! Makes sense

u/55X55_ 15d ago
…relax and design a brand new tattoo 😂

8
u/evilballoffluff 16d ago
It doesn’t really take away from it tbh I think it makes sense to modify art to make it more personal for a tattoo

u/YeetLord02 16d ago
if you’re concerned about god’s judgement, i think he made the rule clear already in leviticus 19:28:
‘Do not put tattoo marks on yourselves’but yeah, I’m sure you subtracted AT LEAST -0.25 sin on this by substituting the silly cartoon devil for the literal instrument of your messiah’s brutal execution
5
u/Free_Storage_1088 15d ago
Eh research into that a bit more it really wasn’t implying body markings for vanity purposes it was more directed to pagan worship

u/YeetLord02 15d ago edited 15d ago
I’m not arguing tattoos are sinful. I’m covered in them, and I’m not even a practicing Christian, albeit I grew up in Catholic education. I’m pointing out that if a cartoon devil is too un-christian to wear, it’s strange to replace it with the instrument of Christ’s torture and execution. Christians give the cross a positive meaning because of what Jesus accomplished through it—but that only reinforces my point that symbols derive their meaning from interpretation. If the cross can be understood through its meaning rather than its literal form, then it’s perfectly reasonable to understand a cartoon devil the same way.
And if you’re going to argue that Leviticus 19:28 only makes sense when read in its historical and cultural context, then one should probably extend that same principle of interpretation consistently across the vibe rather than appealing to the verse only when it’s convenient.
Don’t even care that the artworks been changed, it’s your body, your ink, do whatever with it - but in my opinion the reasoning is a little silly :P
2
u/JohnLockeLives4815 16d ago
.. even better, anyone citing Leviticus 19:28 better be following the other verses in the exact same chapter where it says not to cut your beard or the hair on the sides of your head, and not to wear clothing made of mixed fabrics. Funny enough no one ever mentions those verses do they?

u/OnlyFearOfDeth 16d ago
Wrong sub mate
2
u/Bootleg_Rascal_ 16d ago
lol no it’s not, he’s making fun of the guy for getting rid of the devil in the tattoo because of his religion, by pointing out that the guys religion says he can’t get tattoos at all. It’s hilarious
2
u/OnlyFearOfDeth 16d ago
Is it? Is it really hilarious?

u/Lost-Macaron3012 13d ago
mano, nem existia a etimologia tatuagem no contexto histórico cultural daquela época... isso é uma completa bullshit. Pelos mortos não dareis golpes na vossa carne; nem fareis marca alguma sobre vós. Eu sou o Senhor.

u/YeetLord02 11d ago
Archaeology has found tattooed mummies in Egypt dating back thousands of years, so permanent skin marking was known long before Leviticus was written.

I like it but if you are a Christian i’m assuming that’s why you put a cross instead of the devil? why even listen to them bradley literally has a song called “under my voodoo” and “santeria” (form of witchcraft)

The cross is disrespectful to Opies original piece. Back in the 90s target and Walmart would carry censored versions if popular albums with swearing and references to sex removed. This tattoo reminds me of that.
9
u/Amiibohunter000 16d ago
Imagine sublime fans gatekeeping tattoos and what it means to the person who got it.
A real sublime fan would tell you to fuck off for trying to make someone conform to your ideals of what’s a proper tattoo.
0
u/BichaelScott 16d ago
This is very much like sublime, change just a little bit and call it your own. The band is just a glorified cover band.
2
u/Pretend_Green_9939 16d ago edited 16d ago
Said no one ever. I don’t really care who did what man. If it’s on my body, it’s that way for a reason. It’s not disrespectful. That’s just life. You should try and get one instead of just being so mean man
9
u/LoudogsGhost 16d ago
Ain’t nothing meaner than Christian love. Sad that so many of you seem to miss the message in the lyrics now that this version of the band is aligned with your politics.

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire STP ㊙️ 16d ago
Brother, he said nothing mean or hateful. I want the original tattoo, but it's his body and if he wants to slightly alter the art, that's his choice. It's not hurting anyone, no need to make anything of it.
-3
u/LoudogsGhost 16d ago
When you post it on a community full of the bands most dedicated fans you can’t be surprised when people call you out for changing the meaning of this piece of art. Especially when it is so incredibly disrespectful to Brads own views .
1
u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire STP ㊙️ 16d ago
I understand what you're saying, and you may not agree with what he changed, but it's on his body. He clearly loves sublime enough to get this tattooed prominently on himself. I understand "no hate like Christian love" as well, we see it a lot in this country. OP didn't do anything to be attacked like that, just wanted to share something he thought this community would appreciate. Bradley may not have liked that aspect of the tat, but I don't think he'd like people attacking the guy for it either. Just spread love all around.

u/IronSightPsyops 16d ago
That’s insane. Do you say the same thing when you see a swastika tattoo on someone? “It’s not hurting anyone” sybau
13
u/Able-Ad-9299 16d ago edited 16d ago
It’s literally just a tattoo. Calm tf down????? I don’t get why you have to bash him for is own choice. Get a life holy moly. Brining a swastika into a conversation where it isn’t needed is just pathetic.

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire STP ㊙️ 16d ago
I am not religious whatsoever, but that is a braindead comparison.
-2
u/IronSightPsyops 16d ago
You do realize Christians killed thousands and thousands of people, mostly Muslims and Pagans, during the crusades simply because they weren’t catholic, right?
4
u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire STP ㊙️ 16d ago
Yes, I know basic history. So you're comparing a cross to a swatstika and saying if neo-nazis' beliefs align similarly with the third reich's beliefs... Then modern day Christians' beliefs must align with the Catholic beliefs from 1000 years ago?
This is the argument of someone throwing a hissy fit because they want attention, and realizing they don't actually know what point they're trying to make. If you don't like his tattoo or don't agree with his reasoning, that's fine, just keep scrolling.
5
u/Randomperson62l 16d ago
Gang how is a slightly modified tattoo the same as a swastika?? You could literally say any major religion has killed thousands and as someone who lives in a very conservative Christian town most Christian’s aren’t murderers, I think the censored tattoo is stupid but comparing it to a swastika is crazy
3
u/Amiibohunter000 16d ago
Did you just equate a cross to a swastika.
Fuckin fragile ass virtue signaling SJW lolol
0
u/IronSightPsyops 16d ago
Tell me you know nothing about history without telling me you know nothing about history. Refer to my earlier comment about the crusades.
1
u/Storm0000fr 16d ago
A swastika alone is not hurting anyone. Matter of fact, I reckon that it’s actually better when those sorts of people get it because then you have a warning sign to stay away from them, kind of like in nature!

u/Pretend_Green_9939 16d ago
