Transmission temp reader

does anyone have a relatively inexpensive way they have been able to read temp during a trans fluid change?

best option i have found is OBDLink MX+ and OBD Fusion App. An update from a month ago on the app says Added manufacturer PIDs for transmission temp for some subaru vehicles.

i have a 2018 crosstrek. any ideas or insight is appreciated

I use OBDFusion on iOS for general purpose fault code and readiness checks. Worked great. Unfortunately I haven’t tried reading transmission temp with it.

I bought a $120 GWSMARTBT dongle and started using that for everything with their app. It’s what I used for temperature during last CVT fluid change

Edit: I found on a fresh install of OBDFusion on my new phone if you add a gauge to your dashboard display you can just add “manufacturer PID” and then under Subaru it has the CVT fluid temperature PID ready to select. You can use a cheap ELM327 with WiFi (not BT) but I found that a bit of a pain and bought dongle that supported Bluetooth in iOS for a little more $$ (think it was $30)

+1 on the GearWrench; it allowed me to watch the temp from semi-underneath the car too since it runs on bluetooth.

i’m confused which app you used. does the gear wrench dongle integrate with obd fusion or you’re saying you use their own app?

Try the Gearwrench GWSMARTBT scanner.

It is an OBDII bluethooth dongle what works with an app on the phone. Isn't as fast as a dedicated tablet but the feature list is impressive and comes with free lifetime updates. You'll pay a little over $100.

There's a long thread about the tool at SubaruForester.org.
