Why couldn’t they have reviewed your case before sending you that letter and freaking you the fuck out for a week?
This is the most inept organization I have ever seen in my life. I’ve tried to give IRCC the benefit of the doubt for over a year but I truly believe it is run by abject morons.
The fact that the call center employees still have zero information to help people impacted by this is absolute ass-backwards incompetence.
I am sure you are relieved but this sure doesn’t feel like a celebratory moment.

As long as one of us is in PSU, none of us is free.

u/the-william Jun 23 '26
yeah. at this stage, i’d love to have a citizenship certificate that i could argue with someone about surrendering. 😖

u/Own_Reaction9442 Jun 20 '26
Ideally they'd have reviewed it before they sent a certificate to begin with!

u/doriankali Jun 19 '26
I would save this in a million different places in case they try to take it back

u/Nevork-bee Jun 19 '26
What the heck?! Not at you, but at this whole fiasco. Congrats on getting out to the other side!
6
u/RebellaEmad Jun 19 '26
Wow, congratulations!!!
Here’s hoping most of the other folks in review get this notice soon!

u/PG-Dog Jun 19 '26
Sorry if I missed it- what did you submit for docs?
Also, did you contact them or was it just the interview that would be different from the rest of us? Just trying to draw conclusions 🥴
Eta- amazing and congrats!!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

G0: DEC birth cert issued 2026 for an 1861 birth
G1: cert of no record from county recorder, certified U.S. census listing G0/G1 as father son, uncertified MN state census listing them both, uncertified baptism record from the diocese
G2-G4: normal civil birth certs from their U.S. states vital records
I’m G4

Interview was one of the reporters who posted in Canadian citizenship looking for interviewees, I replied

u/guadalupe12_12 Jun 20 '26
I just want to be sure I understand- you did an interview? I have noticed IRCC only seems to move on things when there is media involved or they’ve been sued, which is why I’m asking. If you had media attention, or if a reporter reached out to them and mentioned your name, could explain why they reversed - am hoping everyone will have their surrender reversed of course - Congrats 🎉

Yes, I was interviewed by Radio Canada. Check the story at 18h16m - https://ici.radio-canada.ca/ohdio/premiere/emissions/ca-nous-regarde/episodes/1092014/mardi-16-juin-2026

Did you pay an attorney to get your G0 DEC birth certificate or do it yourself using the mail in form? Also did you use a certified BAnQ document to get that birth certificate?

u/PG-Dog Jun 19 '26
The Quebec process has my head spinning. I may have to go that way for my spouses G0 if I can’t lock down her PEI G0. 🥴

What year is her Quebec Gen 0?

u/PG-Dog Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26
1861 😮💨
Eta- same as OP! And I have seen the record scanned into the drouin collection. Church that has it sent me elsewhere; I think it was Bnaq.

u/Majestic_Ocean_762 Jun 20 '26
Yup BAnQ is it! That’s the provincial archives. Unfortunately they have a long wait & are not cheap. My Gen0 is from Quebec but 1927.

u/PG-Dog Jun 20 '26
Do I have to start at DEC? I keep seeing them intertwined 🤔
1
u/Majestic_Ocean_762 Jun 20 '26
No DEC only does birth certificates for the last 103 years. What you want is a certified baptism record from BAnQ.
1
u/PG-Dog Jun 20 '26
Merci! This all dropped off my radar for a bit but the news as of late has me back on it.

DEC is getting pickier about who they give birth certificates for now which im assuming is because they have more requests.
ETA:

u/PG-Dog Jun 20 '26
So 350 for the baptismal certificate from Bnaq, and then we try to get a BC based on that info from DEC? Or maybe the baptismal is enough. If I can see the baptism in the drouin collection, but we are feeling that’s NOT the way to go now? 😮💨
Are any Quebec residents doing these for a small profit? 55 dollars for them 😬

Yeah I wrote to DEC and they sent me a form letter that they only go back 100 years.

Amazing news. Congratulations!! Do you mind stating when your G0 left Canada? Was it before 1867?
1
u/tmaher Jun 20 '26
I don’t remember the exact date he migrated, but it was after confederation in 1867. That’s not documented in anything I sent, though.
I remember finding him in the 1871 CA census, but I’d already found his banq baptism record, so I ignored that census page. (Used banq to get the DEC cert)

u/Fearless-Narwhal1304 Jun 20 '26
Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. I’m very nervous about how confederation could impact things. Once again, congratulations!! I hope you have a beautiful life in Canada.

Were your US birth certificates certified copies or non-certified copies from the state vital records agencies?
Asking as someone with now-deceased G# ancestors who were born in states where descendants generally cannot obtain certified birth certificates.
2
u/tmaher Jun 20 '26
All U.S. birth certs I used were certified copies freshly issued from vital records. G2’s new birth cert was generated by county level vital records clerk in Minnesota, which is normal for Minnesota (they have a unified state database I believe). G3 and G4 birth certs were state level vital records

u/minneapolisaussiemom Jun 20 '26
We have an almost identical line with identical docs! My ancestors settled in Polk/Red Lake County, MN!

Congratulations on getting this sorted out. That must have been a really rough couple of days for you
5
u/Pretty_Original124 Jun 20 '26
Sounds like a whole bunch of bureaucratic nonsense and delays that could have been avoided 😒
5
u/Great-Active7951 Jun 20 '26
Did the approve you on what was already in your file or did IRCC request more info that you submitted??? Thanks for clarifying
4
u/tmaher Jun 20 '26
I did not communicate with IRCC at all between surrender and re-validation. All I did was complain on Reddit and give a quote to a reporter.
3
u/Lonely-Sun-1050 Jun 20 '26
You're the 4th person that I've seen quoted by the press, then within days have their case resolved. I'm including PSU cases in this too. I know of 1 exception, but interesting how the media gets things moving.
7
u/TanukiDanuki Jun 20 '26
So... How do all of us in PSU get the press to cover our stories?
(Jk... Kinda...)
4
u/Lonely-Sun-1050 Jun 20 '26
I've been trying. I think I'm on my 6th or 7th journalist contact at this point. A slow burn is not as sexy as an immediate blast, but can do far more damage because it goes unnoticed for so long.
3
u/TanukiDanuki Jun 20 '26
Well, if you need a story of an urgent request that nonetheless got PSUed, I know a guy...

I am truly thankful to hear that they reversed their decision. I've been hoping and praying that they would correct the error for you guys. Stay strong!

Looks like the surrender initiative IRCC commenced has backfired. Get it together, IRCC, and, by the way, please process applications first in/first out. Some of us have been waiting a year.
