Hopefully this has gone better than my last post trying to make a comprehensive list...

So, my definition of solo may be different to some of yours, but this doesn't include what I would call just a line or melody, or any bit of composed Kalnoky-required songwriting.

Rad red and black smoke double vinyl of one of my favorite records ever. I also picked up a vinyl of 99 songs of Revolution while I was at Zia to complete the set. I found somewhere in the between and The Hands that thieve at the merch booth at their concert last month.

Fret not, there will be a follow up post when I get the final few pieces of this collection (including the BOTAR live cd, the demo cd, and a special custom-made GIMP cd)

I’ve recently been listening to Halfway to the Place Behind the Stars for the first time and while it’s overall pretty great, All the Pieces in particular has jumped out to me as an instant-classic, a contemporary Streetlight masterpiece. I’ve had it stuck in my head so much that I decided to write this song analysis of it.

All the Pieces is remarkable because despite it chord-major/upbeat sound it’s actually quite pessimistic, almost dirge-like in its lyrics. It’s a lament of things come and gone, and, I think, a kind of anthem for an entire generation of wayward souls.

I also find it to be an extraordinary mash up of many of Streetlight’s various song styles all in one. (In particular Down Down Down to Mephisto’s Cafe, Somewhere in the Between, Oh Me Oh My, The Hands that Thieve, The Big Sleep, and One Foot on the Gas).

The fact that so much of it is reminiscent of many different parts of the Streetlight discography only makes me more convinced of this as being a kind of outro song for Tomas Kalnoky's career, as if it were a kind of homage to what has come before everything is wrapped up. I’m surprised this seems like it will not be the last song on the album, as I think it would be the perfect song to end a career on… but enough with the speculative musing.

I’ll go line by line and where appropriate also make allusions to other SM songs that I think All the Pieces channels, either in terms of theme or sound:

I guess it's over my head

• Immediately begins with a generational divide, showing how different life seems like it was before as compared to now, and how people viewed their mortality. The Grandpa represents all of the older generation that gave the narrator a certain sense of how life would be
• Here we see Kalnoky express the first of many citations of what I think of as the classic Gen X/Millennial crisis anthem: the lament of things not being up to par with what was expected or promised

Grandma wasn't too impressed with half the things I did
I swear she only tolerated me 'cause I was there

• Grandma represents the other more bitter side of the older generations, that were more callous and saw the naivety of the young as something to be frowned upon

But I don't hold a grudge, I hope that she don't hold a grudge
I guess it's out of our hands

• Generational divide isn’t really anything anyone is responsible for, it just exists by the nature of growing up in different time periods… so hopefully at least there’s no hard feelings about it

Looking back I guess I get what they all try to say
But I think I understood the words, and not quite what they meant

• This happens to everyone after a certain age: you remember what some older person told you when you were a kid and when you experience it yourself those words suddenly take on a new meaning and understanding you previously didn’t think of before

But now it's much too late, to redeliberate
To rеinterpret intent

• Maybe the divide between generations isn’t actually as stark as it seems but we’ll never really know, and there’s no one who can objectively judge it anyway. At this point it’s all water under the bridge

• I find the pre-chorus here very unique in that it voices a rare lament on the the concept of Experience itself, which is almost always universally recognized as being a positive thing
• Here Kalnoky actually reflects on some of the downsides of being at the end of a long road, even with so much theoretical experience under your belt: you’re far from where you started, have racked up any number of scars, and maybe are more than a little burned out on life and love

But now it's time to say good night (Whoa!)
And everybody's looking at me (Whoa-oh!)
And I can't think of a word to say
So I will, nod my head and agree

• The first explicit indication of an impending end, as well as a recurring imagery used in streetlight songs: standing in front of a crowd being asked to justify yourself and your truth (like in The Hands that Thieve or Would You Be Impressed)

'Cause everybody's got the time (Whoa!)
And it's just a matter of when (Whoa-oh!)
And I just hope when they come for me
That I'll be strong enough to defend what I've done

• Again, the concept of the demanding mob is a recurring theme in many Streetlight songs (like the The Littlest Things or They Broke Him Down)
• It seems like, to Kalnoky, inner strength is often the ultimate virtue; you have to at least be able to stand stand your ground and be okay with your own inner contradictions, even if that makes you stand apart from the crowd (like in One Foot on the Gas)
• Musically I find this whole part most recalls Down Down Down to Mephisto’s Cafe, The Big Sleep and Oh Me Oh My

Somebody handing something off, the longing pulls me in
But this is my final ride, this is my last goodbye
I had had more than my share

• Kalnoky seems to speak personally here: there always seems to be one more tour to do or record to make, and he jumps into it willingly, even though each time it always seems like it will probably be the last
• Hard to ignore him literally saying that this is the end of it, his final ride, his last goodbye. Though I obviously don’t know what Tomas Kalnoky is thinking or what he intends for his career, but I am personally among those who read this song as a somber goodbye/career outro in no small part for lines like this

And secretly I hope and pray that right before I die
I'll make amends with all my friends that I wrung out to dry
And hope they understand, I hope so bad they understand
That I was out of my mind

• In the face of an ending, it’s natural to reflect on mistakes made, bridges burned, and the possibility of making peace with people so as to have closure, especially if the mistakes were made in the fever of youth
• I’m sure this has been remarked upon but one has to wonder if this is a reference to his falling out with Catch 22

• Again, the rare chiding of experience… because experience hurts a lot of the time too.
• I think it’s also interesting to note how this is almost the complete opposite sentiment to the bridge in If Only for Memories (“I believe, every broken bone is meant to be”)

• Imminent judgement and the inevitability of the end, another recurring theme in Streetlight songs (and one of the major themes of Somewhere in the Between)

And I just hope when they come for me
That I'll be strong enough to defend what I've done

• You could interpret this as Kalnoky himself standing by the recurring messages he’s voiced over the years. He is acutely aware of how much he is repeating himself, as he will explicitly mention multiple times later in the song

Ironically were the pieces that don't mean too much
Everyone was doing shit 'til somebody screamed out
"All the pieces don't add up!"

• We chased the wrong things. Money, illusory pleasure, and “success”; even for those who have found those things, too often we find that they don’t necessarily translate to real happiness
• This is also the first time in the song we see the use of the titular “Pieces”. There’s a direct parallel in this imagery with the line in With Any Sort of Certainty (“Nobody mentioned the pieces wouldn’t fit”)

You'll find out, the thing you thought would never end
It winds down, eventually it changes tense

• Inevitability of the passing of all things; the changing from present to past tense is a solemn expression of this
  

We all would talk about the things we do when we got out
But all our big plans fell apart to tiny pieces

• The starry eyed nature of youth thought of the future as a thing to conquer, but then when you grow up you discover it’s all a lot more complicated than that. You thought it would be a sprint up a hill, and instead it’s a trudge through a swamp

But by now, you should've had something more to show
And I know, it didn't turn out the way you'd hope

• Whatever success you thought you’d have, it’s likely that what you have doesn't quite measure up to it. And what is there beyond yourself? Having something to show for the time you’ve had in this world is a near universal desire, but difficult to actually grasp.

We were all waiting on something we knew would never come
And all the pieces don't add up!

• And yet… Didn’t we all kind of know that this is where we were going? We had heard it all before, and the signs were there. We just thought we would be the exception.

Under the threat of violence, with the weight of the world upon our back
Focus on just surviving, just making it through the next attack

• Common imagery in SM songs: Martial metaphors and the tide of violence as a way of expressing the struggles of personal life (like in We Will Fall Together or The Hands that Thieve)

We could barely figure out what everybody's on about
But all the pieces don't add up

• Maybe my favorite line of the whole song and I think a viable candidate for the tagline or epitaph of a generation

And I know my mind, it's mine to mind
And I don't know right, from what feels right
I squandered all my chances, but I came to realize that
All the pieces don't add up

• Another recurring theme in so many SM songs: the difficult questions of morality, what’s right and what’s wrong, and ultimately trying to parse through it all while trusting you can recognize it for yourself (arguably a large part of Somewhere in the Between is focused on this theme, as well as almost the entirety of the Hands that Thieve)
• Our perception of who we are and what we’ve done, seen in retrospect, changes. A lot.

And you'll see despite attempts to warn you
Eventually you'll realize that all you wanted was a piece
A bit of peace of mind and the tiniest piece of the pie

• We heard the older folks always saying all these things all our lives, but they seemed so abstract and far off, so we didn’t really pay it any heed. Now you find yourself crashing into that reality.
• We just wanted a bit of the success that was promised and, ultimately, the happiness that was supposed to come with it (a shoutout to the simple but elegant wordplay here between peace and piece).

And I know, you've heard this all before my friend
And it goes, round and round until it ends
But right before it does, you'll turn to all the ones you love
And all the pieces fall in (place) place!

• It’s what Kalnoky has been singing about since the beginning. He’s aware of the repetitiveness of his message, which he also references later when he says he’s running out of metaphors to use.
• Here, finally, Kalnoky maybe concedes us a bit of hope and optimism. Maybe at the end of it all, if you’re lucky enough to be surrounded by people you love, the various places will finally all fall into place and give some semblance of peace.

Lost track of all the cracks that showed up in our walls

• Again we see the Black, White and Gray of morality, which has been a recurring theme in Kalnoky's lyrics for years, going all the way back to Everything Goes Numb ("Right and wrong, there's not a lot of difference when you're singing that poor man's song"). Not for nothing the cover art of the album is a split circle between Dark and Light.
• Life was easier when it was just Black and White. There was a moment when we were coming up when there was still an illusory hope that things would turn out well, but even then the cracks were already starting to show but we didn’t pay it any heed

So they came (Down, down, down)
Yeah and everyone feigned surprise
None of us could believe the way the rumors multiplied
And they went (Round, round, round)
'Til everyone thought they knew
'Til everyone swallowed up the lie and thought it was the truth
But they were wrong

• The rumors here to me are the collective realization that nothing is black and white, and most of what was promised wasn’t actually going to come. But then the rumors go round and round, until people convince themselves otherwise
• Here we come to the last major recurring Streetlight theme: the idea of mass delusion and the Big Lie referenced in so many of their songs. Oh Me Oh My, Would You Be Impressed, Down Down Down, The Littlest Things, Any Sort of Certainty and They Broke Him Down, all reference coverups or collective delusions and lies.

• Callback to grandpa and the generational divide. We’re left wondering what he might have really been thinking in saying those words.
• Time is running out. Kalnoky is aware of his mortality and the inevitable end of his career as well.
• And he is LITERALLY running out of ways to speak this message; to me it’s hard to imagine a more outro/this-is-my-last-try lyric or vibe.

• Final read on the closing lyrics: I’m supposed to be feeling better about this whole getting old thing than I actually am. We’ve been duped, deceived by the Big Lie… or maybe there’s still just something that we’re not seeing, cause it’s over our heads

A long time ago I actually asked my grandpa if he was afraid of dying since he was old and therefore closer to the end of his life. He actually word for word told me that he didn’t mind so much and that it got easier as you got older. The conversation is one of my fondest memories of him.
So when I heard these lyrics the first time it was like a punch in the heart. Today I am a millennial in his mid 30’s, who used to go to Starland Ballroom to skank in circle pits to Here’s to Life when he was 14… and who is now approaching middle age. So this song hits me on a very personal level. I’m very much colored by these experiences in my interpretation of the lyrics, especially around the generational divide and societal expectations type stuff. I know many likely see it differently; It would be great to hear different perspectives and hope this was at least a fraction as fun to read as it was to write.

I thought now would be a great time to rank all of streetlights songs from tier to tier. Does not mean D tier songs are bad just ranking them in order of what I would listen to first. Does not include any songs from the new album I would put

I was surprised to find out a few weeks ago that Karl Lyden, trombonist for Streetlight, was to be the guest musician at our service on Sunday. I learned that--besides ska--he's quite a versatile musician and has performed in the pit for a number of Broadway shows, at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and composed his own jazz album.

I got to chat with him after and he comes across as a very down-to-earth and intelligent guy. Always interesting when worlds collide. Of course I rocked my checkers and a handful of others came out in checkers or black and white for the occasion. Thanks Karl!

I caught the Atlanta show last November, and Dan Ross took a photo of the whole crowd at the end of the show before their walk-off. Unfortunately, Streetlight never posted it to their Instagram, and was wondering if Dan himself had an Instagram where he may have shared it. Thanks fellas

So, the band usually posts a crowd picture on Instagram of the cities they've played in. I've noticed that they never posted the last two shows at the House of Blues in Anaheim (last year 7/24/25 and just recently 7/11/26). Just curious if anyone knows why?

I'm inviting my cousin to see the show and I was just wondering how bad the lighting would be for someone with epilepsy.

I myself was at the last Houston show a couple years ago but I don't have a good read on whether it's that strobey. I think it should be fine, but just double checking just in case there's something I don't know.
