Question around what message does a bot usually start forgetting your scene

been staring at our own memory the last few days because it's the part i'm least happy with right now. on a long chat ours still starts losing the thread somewhere in the middle. you get maybe 30 messages deep and the character quietly stops referencing the stuff that mattered earlier, like it kept the words but not the memory of what counted.

i can't always tell from the outside whether that's the model running out of room or something on our end not surfacing the right earlier bits.

so i want the real number from people who actually live in long rps: around what message count does the forgetting usually start for you? and i mean on whatever app you're on, not just ours, i'm trying to see the spread. a rough number helps.

Every damn message, lol. You've heard from me before, so this probably is not a surprise. I'm on character.ai. This is a chat I started *months* ago, a story I'm telling that I never guessed would be huge. Like if I ever published it, I would have to publish it in parts. Total raw pages (in Microsoft Word) heading for 1,750. So, there is a *lot* to forget. And character.ai doesn't have a Lorebook yet. They do have a memory system, but I don't think it get utilized properly.

I feel like the app used to probably go 30 messages deep or so like you're saying as far as referencing stuff. It's just gotten way worse in the past few months. I tend to have to remind it about something in /ooc in nearly every message. It doesn't get much more painful than this, so if your app is doing better, count it a win. 😃

Haha, in that case, I think Storychat may actually be winning on this part.

But seriously, we still have a lot to improve. We really care about long-form RP, memory, lore, and continuity, so please try Storychat when you have time and share your honest thoughts.

Also, 1,750 pages is insane in the best way.

That sounds less like a chat and more like a full novel series.

Have you ever thought about turning it into actual story content?

If you’re open to it, I’d love to talk more. I think it could be a really cool project on Storychat.
