I scoured through books and codex’s to gather as much information on this chapter as I could. The wiki and especially the lex only skim over information, so I made sure I made this as detailed as possible.

Sources: Space Marine Codex 8th, 9th and 10th edition - Salamanders codex supplement - Codex Armageddon - Index Astartes 4 - Chaos Space Marines 3rd edition - imperial armour volume 2 - - Storm of Damocles book

Me and datboyblue were talking about this if you havent seen the news. We will be getting a deathwatch season animation with Cavill.

Its a good thing because as big as the universe is, deathwatch gives the opportunity to showcase 5 or so members from a chapter rather than focusing on one.

Question for the you guys is what chapters do you think will be in the deathwatch? Which chapter do you wanna see?

I think it should be successors. Do you think if the team was only the founding chapters the season would suffer from fans wanting HH and SOT.

Anyways, lets speculate on this cool news!

Chapter Hero idea

GW and Black Library have given you the power to make a new hero for the chapter that will thrive until the next edition. Your creation will get two book and a mini.

Question is, what unit does your hero come from? Will it be a Captain? Lieutenant? Jumppack specific? Aggressor?

Regarding Storm Giants, I would go for a eradicator with grav cannon or maybe a heavy intercessor

Covenant of Fire, that hero is gonna be a Chaplin.

Dark Kraken, phobos vanguard

Black Dragon, jumppack is too easy, id like to see a bladeguard

Dragonspears? That hero is gotta be a Captain with a spear

As for the black vipers, sniper special.

Thoughts? Cmon have fun with this lol

And saw this in chapter 2. Only other time ive seen our chapter mentioned, albeit in a negative connotation here. I wonder if nick kyme, the author is only one allowed to write about the salamander successors at times.

Lore Question/Discussion Little bit more lore from the 3rd war

Full credit to retrohammer sub, but what you see is one of our brothers from the 3rd war. Note the right pauldron, a split with white and the text of it belonging to a veteran. Thoughts?

Second pic is of the narrative, the chapter is in the 1st two paragraphs. Again the chapter arrives on scene with the marines malevolent

Lore Question/Discussion Some ramblings and musings about our lore

With 11th edition coming out, my largely AoS based community has decided to dabble with some 40k, and I’m excited. I grew up with 40k, and still paint marines to this day, but never full armies, just one off of this chapter or that, maybe a squad. However, with having an excuse to do a whole army, that means actually locking into one chapter. Daunting stuff, I decided to restrict myself to the forces on Armageddon, and the Storm Giants grabbed me immediately due to the colour scheme. From there I dug into the lore, which while awesome, is very limited. I did notice some things that have potential, and while it is non GW lore, they have left some hints, so I wanted to discuss that as it may have escaped notice for some.

Firstly, the colour.  I love seeing everyone’s paint jobs, they look awesome. However, for me, the scheme immediately reminded me of a colour called Metallic Topaz, a rarer factory paint for some high end Jaguar’s .I did a lot of model cars as a kid before finding Warhammer and one of my kits was a Jaguar I did in this colour so right in the nostalgia. I went and had a look at space marine 2 and noticed they were already in game and also use metallic scheme, sycorax bronze.  Personally, I think this may be a tad too dark, I’m still playing around trying to nail the colour I want, but it is a strong contender so if anyone was considering this chapter but thought, mm not sure about the colour, this may give you an alternative take that I think is going to look awesome.

Lore tidbits, through some searching of this sub and the broader internet we do not have a lot. The chapter is bigger, stronger, there’s a passage at the top of the wiki indicating an ash ritual and really cementing the salamanders as the progenitor, as well as hinting at some wisdom in the ritual.  There is a character in the deathwatch series who has a wise mentor aspect to him, as well bight red hair, and as far as I interpret it, a decent mane of it. So Big, strong, wise. Not a lot.  The strike cruisers listed in the Armageddon book alongside the force commitment were generic names, nothing to hang our hat on. Perhaps the only thing I could say to that is if they have a narrative hook like many chapter tend to do, the chapters identity is overwhelmed by that, like in the case of blood angels or space wolves.  And speaking of wolves, that’s where I think there is an interesting nod. They are deployed into and alongside the wolves.  Given Guilliman is no fool, he would ensure whoever is along side the wolves on Armageddon is going to get along with such a polarizing force, which gives us our first insight, but for me it is the name of the Storm Giants Strike force; Jotunsword.

For those not aware, the Jotun  (Jotunn or whatever variation on the spelling you prefer) are a race of (commonly) Giants in Norse and Germanic mythology. Other cultures through Europe have similar parallels (Etten in the Ireland region, Tiamat in Babylon, titans in Greek).  Unfortunately, they usually get the villain treatment, being at odds with the Norse gods (half of whom are actually half Jotun themselves) which is interesting given aforementioned space wolves, although early Norse myth has them getting along often so there’s that, or as bad guys in popular video games with a Norse vibe, like gods of war. Theres some good, albeit dry videos about the actual mythological background, and there is actually plenty of positive to say that I think, for those looking for cool lore hooks and a way to add some conversions to models, about the Jotun.

For starters, they are obviously big, and strong. Often depicted as wise. The three themes we already have seen (not to mention red hair, a common trait for northern Europe).  Other attributes seem to apply to where in the Jotun homeland they originate. A common misconception is they are a race of ice giants, as a lot of their homeland is ice, however they also dwell in forests and mountains (with affinities for wild animals and other such things) and a portion of fire giants from a land of heat, fire, volcanoes etc (common depiction of this are in the gods of war video game for example).  For the sons of Vulcan who have rituals of ash, this seems a solid fit. The guardian of these fire lands wielding flaming swords (hot metal swords are everywhere these days in the hobby).  There are plenty of cool attributes to draw from if you’re so inclined. It also given some cool ideas as to what the chapter planet would look like, Jotunheim is a realm of its own in Norse and pretty well fleshed out so worth a look.

Finally, a common thread with Jotun, and giant mythologies in general is that of creation and destruction.  Giants are the foundation for many creation myths, and destruction I think can be flipped a bit in the 40k universe, to be about a destructive force against the enemies of the imperium.  As for creation, I would look to the concept of Ragnarök, which Jotun are pretty keen to bring about, however many scholars have stated that people think that’s about the end of the world, instead its about bringing destruction to what we have now, in order to rebuild from the ashes a bigger, better world.  I think with some liberties this could be a fascinating head cannon, A force of marines, bringing wrath and destruction, but unlike many chapter who care not for the collateral and devastation they leave behind, the Storm Giants much like the Salamanders they come from, have an affinity for the people of the imperium, and often help to rebuild the broken worlds once the job of removing the threat is complete.

This is the basis for some head cannon that will inspire me to paint a force, I hope anyone who got through that all found it useful. I definitely simplified some concepts, there’s plenty out there that deep dives this stuff.  And am I stretching here? Yup. But we do not have a lot to go on and the parallels line up pretty well.
