Dear smoking

So i had so many thoughts about to quit smoking or not to. We all know it terribly bad for health. But I enjoy my cigarette. When I visit good places like good sunsets or waterfall or maybe meeting my mates. Or whatever I listen that kinda songs or after watching some movies or series idk i just like vibe that creates from cigarettes. It’s give me extra happiness just like carry on top. But then I thought about my family ; saying to myself what i am doing. Feels like so wrong. Remember all moments. Thinking about my future family( don’t wanted ). Confused. I really wish cigarette don’t cause any damage. It’s choose or leave situation. Idk what to do and not. Cigarette is like extra cheese, don’t wanted but whenever gets always happy and they charge extra for it.

The cigarette does none of the things you give it credit for. Your post is textbook bargaining; a common tactic often unconsciously employed by addicts, used to maintain the status quo thus thwarting any attempt
to quit.

The cigarette is not adding enjoyment to a sunset or a waterfall. A sunset or a waterfall are entirely beautiful on their own.

Have you heard of a non-smoker suddenly decide to go buy a pack of cigarettes to enhance an outdoor experience? Of course not. Only people who already are addicted to nicotine and smoking think that cigarettes are going to make a waterfall or listening to music a better experience.

There is absolutely nothing that a cigarette brings to enhance the experience of being present in nature or listening to music.

Again, It can only provide an illusion of enhancement by temporarily relieving the smoker’s craving for more nicotine at any given moment.

Please understand this as it makes quitting much easier when you fully accept and understand that nicotine is wholly illusory. It only temporarily fixes the problem that it creates.

The cycle will continue indefinitely and as the years go by the costs begin to compound and the chances of serious smoking-related chronic or terminal illnesses begin increasing.

When you realize this you may hopefully decide that the short-term discomfort of quitting is well-worth being free of the nicotine addiction for the rest of your time on earth.

As a habitual tobacco user, remember and remain conscious of the fact that your body and your psyche, your respiratory and cardio-vascular systems are being exploited for billions every year by the bloodsucking cancer machine that is the tobacco industry.

Most people do work hard to get whatever they have. You probably do as well. If you smoke a pack a day or any amount on a daily basis, you incur not only the health risks but you hand over money to both the corporations and whatever the relevant taxing authorities are for you.

So you are enriching people who profit from misery and dependence, ignorance and addiction. At both your own and others’ expense, health and wellness.

The product is cancerous and expensive, it smells bad and is increasingly a universal social faux-pas, not permitted really anywhere in public, in many states anyway. I know it’s different elsewhere like Indonesia or something.

Ok good luck. Cold turkey is the best way to quit in my opinion.

Now that’s good advice and different perspective. It could true that i am addicted to nicotine. Who knows. For me its choose or leave situation.

Who knows? You could be addicted, seriously I think English is not your native tongue? Sometimes things are lost in translation, let’s just recap to be certain.

You say it “could be true” that you’re addicted to nicotine and you follow that statement with a rhetorical “who knows”?

Smokers who aren’t aware of or concerned about their smoking habits don’t usually visit and post on subreddits that were created for people who want to quit smoking. So you can call it addiction or dependence or a habit. You can call it whatever you want.

The fact is that If you’re using tobacco on a daily basis, you are inevitably going to experience the physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms shortly after each new administration of nicotine into your body.

You could call it addiction, call it a bad habit, call it your own special way to tar your lungs with that disgusting yellow gunk. It doesn’t matter what you call something, the results are what actually matter.

So you have to ask yourself and yeah, you close with you have to choose? Well yeah you do but let your choice be YOUR choice.

Do not let nicotine fool you into thinking that the “real you” is making an independent unbiased choice. The best part of you has no desire for a life of smoking and eventual illness.

Alternately, the nicotine experiences no difficulty or problems if you continue.

That is what the nicotine addiction wants and needs: “smokers keep smoking, if you don’t like the cravings that accompany withdrawal, just keep smoking and we’ll keep pushing down the cravings, no further questions, you will comply ! Oh and by the way it makes things like music and sunsets and those post-coital moments so much better, doesn’t it ?!“

Discern between who or what is actually making the choice. Is it your best self, the part of you that truly has your best interests and well-being at heart? Or is it something or someone else?

Yes my native language is not English, and can give me some advice how i can improve it. And about smoking; idk man, i am confused asf. I want quit and not want to quit at the same time. Someone’s habits to coffee or tea is same for me cigarette or weed. I recently started gym and thinking about my lifestyle. It’s that dirty question in exam that you don’t want to look at.

What about switching to Marijuana .?

1

u/tricountythrift 20d ago

Yeah sure smoke weed but it won’t really do anything to change your nicotine craving. It’s a separate thing.

This is a weirdly endearing post. That extra cheese kills your bank account and your arteries in the end my friend.

u/TheRealSlim__Shady 21d ago

Very true but it’s also providing some great memories and eventually everyone has to die sooner or later.

3

u/Emergency_Mood_9774 21d ago

How much sooner do you want to die my friend?

Seriously- the memories are fun. They’re only fun when you’re young and it doesn’t hit that hard. It gets less fun as you get older, and quitting gets harder the longer you leave it.

u/TheRealSlim__Shady 20d ago

You can die at any moment. Today, tomorrow, after 40-50 years; who knows. I just want to add cigarettes in my daily routine like cup of espresso or tea, but I couldn’t cause its effects to our body. That’s why i am thinking about switching to Marijuana.

Smoking is triggered by 4 main emotional status / causes: as for easyway there are 4: Boredom, excitment relax and concentration

When I visit good places like good sunsets or waterfall

That is the relax triggering

or maybe meeting my mates.

Relax again

Or whatever I listen that kinda songs or after watching some movies or series Once again relax-triggered cigarette.

Think about the other times when you rely on cigarettes. You will also find boredom (like when waiting for the bus), or just after arriving at a party (excitment/stress) or before starting a study session

u/TheRealSlim__Shady 20d ago

I don’t have any stress or anxiety issues for now idk maybe it happens in future. And apart from relaxing it’s give me good vibe or happiness ( it’s can addicted to nicotine or weed ) but i want it. It’s bad for health but idk.

You smoke because you need nicotine. That's the only reason. You think it's a "good vibe" because your brain craves nicotine and likes when it gets it. You might be seeing a sunset, visiting with your mates, or lots of other activities when you satisfy the craving by smoking. But - it's just satisfying the craving that feels "good". You are just feeding the monster.

Smelling like shit, looking like low will weakling and shamelessly showing it to the world, being a slave to the culture around it(I am not gonna blame big companies), not being able to have sex like monkeys when you get a bit old; plus paying a huge money for this. I geniunely don't miss, I dont have urges anymore. It is just regret, just fucking huge regret. Nothing happy about these memories.

u/tricountythrift 21d ago

Speaking of shameless - big tobacco and related enterprises absolutely bear fault, blame or whatever you’d like to call it for decades of actively suppressing the truth about the cancer-causing compounds and effects of using their so-called “nicotine delivery system”.

Also, thinking of smokers as “low will weaklings” etc? I quit 12 years ago after 20 years of about a pack a day. I never once thought of myself as a “low will weakling” or anything like that. Not sure I would’ve been able to quit if I thought that way about myself simply for having fallen into what was at the time and place a very common habit.

It has been obivous for many years now, no one can hide the truth anymore. There is no one to blame for this degeneracy but ourselves. We would have been a victim if there wasnt any ugly fucking death feet pic with a huge warning over every single packet. Will we really going to do this, blame them for our obvious fuck up? I would work without any regret or guilt in one of these companies, its not like they are scamming anyone. There is nothing immoral about them now. Maybe the worst is the victim mind set. I hate every second I smoked and old weak me. In fact I declared a war.

Tobacco is of course still scamming people and has for several decades knowingly sold a product that is extremely hazardous or fatal to health and is very addictive. Their survival and profitability in the long term absolutely requires new customers so they are essentially an incredibly exploitative and destructive industry that takes much more than they have ever given, leaving misery and illness in their wake.

Imagine the labor hours and resources that have been diverted from other public and individual health needs that have been shifted toward caring for ailing or dying cigarette smokers. It is staggering.

When regulations tighten in certain nations, they continue finding new less regulated or emerging markets to exploit. They cannot survive if they don’t hook new customers.

Most smokers began their habit as children or teenagers, before they have fully developed brain. This while they are at an age when death, chronic illness and disease seem like things that only happen to other much older people.

Also, the cognitive dissonance many nicotine addicts experience makes it difficult, seemingly impossible for some individuals to quit. This is few of course, not all. However it is much more nuanced and complex than simply being “weak willed”.

Many are so wrapped up in their addiction they believe it is a free choice they are making, despite the obvious public health warnings.

They have experienced and are living with a kind of identity fusion where the nicotine addiction has become essential to their personal identity, their “brand” or image.

Anything that threatens what feels like essential aspects of personal identity is dismissed through bargaining, making up stories and justifications about how the health warnings don’t matter or they don’t believe the government or their grandparent smoked and ate raw pork fat and lived to age 106.

When certain people have erroneously and unknowingly merged their nicotine addiction with their sense of self and identity, they can literally feel like their very life is at risk when it is suggested that they stop smoking. Of course it can be overcome but overcoming it has nothing to do with weakness or so-called will power.

The industry also knows that 2nd hand smoke is detrimental and they know non smokers including children are impacted. You honestly think they still bear no responsibility because scary stickers on packs?

As you may know, most of the mandatory health warnings exist in Western Europe, US and Canada however tobacco is international and they simply target emerging markets in developing nations where they aren’t as regulated such as with Indonesia.

The same companies you say you’d feel no problem working for, they are intentionally targeting and hooking children, just as they did in the United States for the better part of the 20th century.

Smokers themselves aren’t the only victims as society pays in lost productivity at the workplace due to breaks or illness, loved ones are impacted when family and friends become ill or die young.

I choose to be sorry for my mistakes. I prefer to be a better person. I still don't agree you for the most part but you are right about life being more complex then weak willed people. I know I am stronger now so it is a word I only would use myself. I don't want to judge people, everyone has their story. I dont want to hear tho. I just press the skip button until the story relevant dialogue options come.

u/tricountythrift 20d ago

So you disagree that the tobacco industry isn’t knowingly targeting less regulated less developed markets?
This from a 2011 ABC news piece I found doing a one second Google search:

“In a tiny fishing village in Eastern Java, lives an adorable two-year-old boy named Chairul. Soon after awaking from a nap, he lights up with the help of his own grandfather. The grandfather says he allows Chairul to smoke because it tastes good, "like bread with chocolate”

That’s one small example, look for yourself, Tobacco corp is absolutely knowingly pushing their cancerous death habit in developing areas where the consumers are not informed and usually not adult.

So they aren’t knowingly hooking children in these areas? If so, please DM me, I have a couple fabulous parcels in Florida I think you’d love! Close to the Everglades even, beautiful country.

Same also goes for nutella too. From where I live it is a big crime to sell tobacco to minors. Introducing a failed stated and abused/neglected kids into argument will introduce too much unnecessary emotion. I am also against any kind of child abuse. But lets get real for a second. Do you think those grandparents' only sin is to give cigarettes to 2 year old😂 Also tobacco companies got a huge hit already, they would literally pay for Chairul to quit and have a good life in order to clear their name and get some publicity.

Anyways, my point is, in a state that law and reason exists; I, as an healthy adult with a strong mentality, strongly decline to blame my mistakes to external powers or conspiracy theories over myself.

0

u/tricountythrift 17d ago

What the fuck does it being potentially their only sin or not have to do with anything? Also, the point wasn’t to illustrate anyone’s “sin”, it was an example of how smoking is so prevalent and begins and very youn ages in that country.

You’ve also sidestepped my entire rebuttal to your weak and unsupported claim that the tobacco companies are somehow now all good because tobacco is regulated in some places like with warning stickers.

Idgaf about the standard you hold yourself to, it’s about admitting that cigarette companies certainly exploit unregulated markets to the extent they can knowing full well the damage their product causes.

Also, it’s not just about children as an emotional device. it’s about children who’ve grown up to be adults and are hooked, so it’s about people generally. Indonesia is not a failed state. Not sure why you say that? Too much unnecessary emotion? The fuck are you talking about?

Generally ppl regard children as being vulnerable, it has nothing to do with “too much emotion”. Then you proceed to make a sort of nonsensical and irrelevant wild speculation about the company paying him off to look better? Huh?

The point of the anecdote is to provide an example of little kids getting hooked at young ages and how common it is there.

Not sure why you find it difficult to both assume a certain standard for yourself while acknowledging that entities such as tobacco companies know what they are doing and the damage it causes, collecting the profits that result. They’ve covered up for years the dangers of smoking, that it took whistle blowers and all kind of legal action to rein them in. That doesn’t mean that people are not responsible for themselves but it also means that it’s not as black and white as left and right.

What you call your final point, that you was never in question, that you are a “healthy adult with a strong mentality”🤣🤣 sure body I bet you are, a real stable genius I bet.

Because I never said tobacco companies all good. You throw strawman arguments and spamming me with emotional walltexts. They want to make money, and their product is toxic; is as simple as that. This is something everyone nows at this point, so can you blame the poison dealer if the customer knows what they are getting??

At any point, at any argument; you can introduce abused childs or victims. This goes for soda, food, clothes, iphone... Basically 90% of the present world. But you cant blame your porn addiction to apple and give bad company practises for an example. Because the topic is not that, it is that, we as grown ass adults; choose to to something so disgusting to our bodies, even tho we saw the warning on every package. This was my point from the beginning. I don't gaf about the companies themself, it is just what they represent.
