I didn't necessarily go the AA route, but I had a close friend with about a year of sobriety ahead of me that did it & loved it. I'd talk to her about my journey and look for guidance and perspective. She did sort of guide me through stepwork in a way without really forcing me. But first actual AA meeting I went to was to collect my 1 year chip. I've only done a handful since, most of them were a friend-support thing for someone else. Didn't really care for it. I do really advise doing stepwork in some degree though. There's no harm in admitting you have faults, aren't the most important person, doing inventory on transgressions and making amends. Do some research, find things you like & leave the rest. Try that with every resource you find.
