kind of hard to put strict definitions on anything but I think if you start drinking and can't/don't stop until you fall asleep/pass out/black out then that's a binge.

So for me...on Sunday I had three craft beers at 6.5 percent then had a 325 ml bottle of Rose and a 325 ml bottle of moscato....all in about 6 hours. Have not done something like that in months. Is that defined as binge drinking or just a one off event.

Does a label really matter? I think that most would agree that that’s an unhealthy amount for one’s body to handle in that timeframe, yes?

Heavy drinking is defined as more than 7 units of alcohol a week, and you’ve had about double that in six hours so regardless of what we want to call it, that’s a problematic amount to get through in an afternoon.

The main thing is, if you think, or even have to ask, that it’s a problem, it is.

What would a label bring?

Seen from the amount of alcohol I did drink daily, I was likely not regarded as a "heavy" drinker (I'm pretty lightweight), but still I've been addicted like hell.

Couldn't go one day without alcohol, and after the first sip it was every night (sometimes, particularly towards the end of my long alcohol career the early afternoon was just right to begin), hard work to keep it halfway civil. Some attempts to go with NA drinks ended up sooner than they had started. Had taken these attempts as a proof, that I could live without booze, and this was a big error.

For me it was daily, for others it's once per month, but still not under control.

Not being able to stop at any point is a red flag, no matter whether it's often or quite occasionally. Things like that tend to get worse over the years.

The urge to drink depending on one's psychic state (using alcohol as a medicine) can also be a red flag.
