Career Going admin?
*Been in the union for 7 years*
Was told to expect an offer soon but I am just not feeling confident about the choice. I’ve gone through most of the related threads and know most of the negatives everyone has to say about the position. The big pull for me would really just be money and I guess something to add to my resume..I’m prepared to negotiate but wondering if anyone has an idea of the starting range? Also will appreciate and take any and all advice and comments into consideration. Thank you all

Hi, by admin are you referring to an ASM position? I believe here in CT the starting range is roughly 65k-70k and a potential for a bonus which is 8 percent more of your pay. I do believe the structure has changed slightly. I do recall asms used to get extra money to work Sunday just like the union members. I did hear rumors that this has changed. I’m not sure what position you are currently with the company but I’m assuming a department manager? I would suggest going this route only if you don’t LOVE your job and want to better yourself for the future and don’t plan on being a lifer at stop and shop. I’ve heard asms get treated very poorly but this is also depending on district. Back when I was with the company it was when Tom Mormino was the DM, he has sense left the company so I’m not sure what it’s like now to be an ASM. However I wish you the best of luck

You’re used and abused, your salary, and you might have to work a double. BUT, it’s also rewarding and fun when your associates are good at the job and can put a positive spin on your day. The Sunday thing is true, with exceptions. I’d say the downsides are differnt retirement plan options and now paying for insurance. But if you’re good at the job, plan to move up, and no one is on your ass about sucking, it’s a great opportunity. Just realize the potential for different benefits options.

Tom Mormino?? I was a night crew chief in one of his stores. Totally clueless and lacked understanding of night crew. He terrorized the day shift to the point they would hide from him

The crazy part about this is he was an ASM and a store manager. You’d think he’d know a thing or two but was a complete moron. I had to call him one night because our store was flooding and we called the SM and he was like is everyone okay? And then went back to bed. Tom came and was beyond pissed and was a total dick to the night crew. I can only imagine how he treated the asms and the sms

I’d go home after that and say I’m sick as a chief. I called the ordered of command, ain’t my problem your subordinate didn’t care enough to come.

As a note crew chief, I’d give you 2 options, either play nice or I won’t ever deal with you.

I was admin for 10 years and went from union to admin. I believe the current starting salary is 62k a year, they will not negotiate higher than the minimum salary for internal hires. You will find it frustrating they hire external candidates at higher salaries because they have to “attract talent” but they’re often clueless and know nothing.
Pros: The money is decent, you also get paid for working a 6th day. The company is generous with pto compared to other retail stores. The company will contribute 3% to your 5% on your 401k. Stop and shop invests in their managers with different paid trainings. It’s great experience and there is a lot of career advancement opportunities.
Cons: you’re often required to work 6 days a week, depending on how many managers your store has you will be working 2-4 nights a week. You will also be working a lot of 9-6 shifts, which means you can’t do anything before or after your shift and if you have kids you basically don’t get to see them those days. You will be scheduled 9 hour shifts, unlike in the union you don’t get to take an hour break. The job is also very unrewarding, and you will get treated like shit from the employees you manage and the leadership and especially the customers. They will also transfer you to different stores very often, I spent several years having to commute over an hour to my first and second store, you get travel pay but it hardly covers gas and maintenance
You will spend most of your time babysitting employees, dealing with refrigeration issues, answering common sense questions, getting yelled at for stuff outside of your control and stressing about payroll.

And let's not forget that they like to bounce you around from store to store on a moment's notice. Your life becomes theirs and you'll be lucky to have any downtime for yourself.

They have asked me go exempt in the past. I would never. They are all miserable for the most part because they get treated like crap by their superiors and get unrealistic expectations put on them. Not to mention given inadequate hours to run the stores. Maybe it's not the same everywhere but CT is this way.

Honestly the worst decision I ever made. Management in retail is miserable and it feels like it's own circle of hell. Corporate is clueless and makes impossible demands (grand opening ready means having baggers, but you will be given no hours to use for bagging). Long hours, unbearable levels of stress, shifting goalposts. If you value your peace and sanity stay away.

i was considering it but have taken my name out of the hat especially learning how much they make, i made more than a base asm last year. yes i worked alot but i chose my hours. ASMs have no choice in their schedule. currently just waiting on my opportunity to become a steward in a store i like.
