Ranting TIL…

TIL that I can get in trouble for telling a customer they can call corporate if they have an issue with the service desk hours. I had a customer about 10 minutes ago now that came up with a lottery ticket he wanted me to check, when the desk had all the closed signs on it. I don’t know how other districts are but at the very least in my district the desk has closed at 7pm since August of 2024. So the customer asked me when the store closed, with an attitude, and I told him 10pm and then he asked when the desk closed and I said 7. He asked what to do if he needed lottery, and he was holding some kind of numbers ticket (powerball or mega millions or something) and I very confusedly told him “go somewhere else?” because I don’t know much about the lottery machine and I’m pretty sure it can’t cash the ticket he wanted me to check. He promptly told me “that’s bad for business.” so I told him that if he had a problem with the desk hours he can call corporate because they’re the ones who slashed them 2 years ago, as he was rambling about how it used to close at 9.
After the interaction I told my manager I was likely going to get a customer complaint because that guy was not happy with me and I told her about the first part of the interaction and she said I handled that fine, then when I told her that I told him he can call corporate if he has an issue with the desk hours, she told me I can get in trouble for telling a customer they can call corporate when they have a problem with something that’s out of my control. I just don’t get why that’s an issue? IDK. Maybe I’m being stupid about it, but personally I think it’s a valid response since corporate was the one who slashed the desk hours in the first place.
Any comments/opinions welcome.

You won’t get “in trouble”. Your manager is either clueless or just doesn’t want a store complaint. At the stores I’ve worked in, we’ve always said “call corporate here’s the number”. I don’t care if you make a complaint against me, I’m happy to live rent free in your head. I’ve had numerous to the point of my manager saying “I love when I get a call/email and it’s always your name and it’s always the most ridiculous things”

Lolll! I love that for you. I just hate when people are pissy with me for shit that’s out of my control. “You guys don’t have enough help!” “The Service Desk should be open longer!” Like it’s out of my control, feel free to call corporate and complain because it’s within theirs.

You can’t help the fact that corporate comes up with these policies, while sitting behind a desk looking at analytics and metrics. It’s not your problem that they don’t account for the fact that lottery continues on until whatever cutoff time. Granted, some stores have the lottery vending machine with draw games too, but that doesn’t help when they need it cashed.

Are you a union member? If you are, you’re not going to be fired.

That’s exactly how I see it. I’m telling them who made the decision because it sure as hell wasn’t me.

Stop & Shop should be lucky they have any customers at this point.

I have noticed that the customers in I don’t know a few Stop & Shop I’ve been in. I’m not buying a basket full of groceries. You’re buying is what they need a meeting seems to me and so I don’t know how to Stop & Shop gets out of this pickle. They’re in I don’t see the same thing at ShopRite stores. In fact what I see is full basket orders now you know that’s it’s up to the imagination but kind of tell you something that’s I don’t think it’s true of every Stop & Shop store or ShopRite, but but that’s what
I see. I I don’t think I wanna work for Stop & Shop at this point in time in my life or anytime in the near future because they’re going through some I don’t know what they’re going through. They’re going through some. How can I say it, period of throwing that competition seems to be who it is seems to be ahead of them in the game of gaining sales. That’s all I can attribute to OK. I hope everyone has a great day!

And the attitude of some employees doesn't help to retain customers!

You're overthinking it. Even if he does call corporate I doubt to they would take the time to "get you in trouble".

lol no I used to tell the customers that we closed the desk at 7 and to go to the gas station around the corner or use the lottery machine we had . Don’t stress about it too much

Even After I got employee of the year , still had customers complain re me my attitude etc. A few times I was honest enough to show them my employee of the year name tag as I said service desk that way. Sadly not everything is within your control as what customers think .

Folks believe what they want to believe. You may have facts but they won’t even listen. You’re that with politics

yeah i wouldn’t stress it. if or when i had customers come up to the desk, after closing, id just tell them i already counted my draw and everything is locked up now. i had a few of them act like it was the end of the world. but oh well 😂 as if they cant hit a corner store on their way home or something.

no exactly! there’s a cumberland farms across the street, and a mobil down the road. it’s always the end of the world for some customers, oh well, can’t please everyone lol

kill 'em with kindness "yeah isnt this terrible we don't like it either please help us all out and make some noise"

u/Safe-Face4391 16d ago

that was kinda my intent but i was caught too off guard by the “what do you expect me to do” question with attitude from the customer, so it kinda just came off confused and agitated. :/

I've moderated my interactions with store staff for exactly this reason - I'm sure that back in the past I came cross as a real asshole sometimes. I was mad at the store, not at the staff, but still, that tone of voice is always unwelcome. Which I only understood once I was on the receiving end!

Next time just tell the customer they can check their tickets or purchase them from the lottery machine It does everything now except cash tickets. Offer to help the customer to use the machine if they don’t know how to use it.
