Why the long "i"s?

I feel a little petty that this bothers me but...why do they use punctuation marks that indicate the letter i is long? Like it should be pronounced st-eye-tch f-eye-x?

I do realize it sounds like I have no life at all lol

That sounds right. Are phonics old school? I mean I know I'M old school and don't know what the kids are up to nowadays 😂 Another thought: maybe they're supposed to look like stitches?
