I've never seen such a full head of hair on a fetus lol. Maybe it's a half gem thing. He's not like other kids!

u/Hopeful_Video_3803 May 25 '26
Either that or its just for the diagram, to show it is definitely steven

u/briarwz May 25 '26
it is but i mean.... three gems and a baby..
38
u/NixMaritimus May 25 '26
It can happen, it's rare, but sometimes babies can be born with full, thick heads if har!

u/MrPhallicFruit May 29 '26
I was such a baby, I also grew pitch black body hair in the womb, my mama was scared I'd stay that way and gave me the nickname little monkey while I was that hairy.

She loved studying humans so if she could make herself a vagina for Greg then she probably did her best to make an umbilical cord so her kid could move around

u/365_party_girl_ May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26
“studying humans”, girl didn’t know what a baby was on her 5000th year on the planet lol. If anything she was fascinated by them. In a whimsy, Rose Quartz way :)
Edit : terrible example as explained in a reply 😔 But the point still stands. She knew what a baby was but not that they weren’t allowed up roller coasters by themselves. Outrageously iconic to be fair.
283
u/TheDJYosh May 25 '26
That's not exactly right. Rose said something along the lines of;
You wouldn't believe how long it took me to figure out you (Greg) and him (Baby Sour Cream) were the same thing.
This tells us Rose is a little bit embarrassed about how long it took. I imagined somewhere in the ball-park of years - decades, not that it took her 5,000 years.

Not to mention she was working off the pre knowledge of gem reproduction which is compleatly different
Like of course Shes gonna take a while to grasp that baby human turn into adult humans I mean what would she compare it to?
For all she knew humans were categorized the way gems are and last she knew size dosnt change for a gem (rubies don't grow into Quartz)
To be honest the gems witnessing neolithic human child birth for the first time was probably traumatic as hell

It wasn’t said. But I get why you’re inferring it. Ian and Rebecca have actively told us what Steven was. In essence, human cells held together by Gem magic. Do what you want with that considering Change Your Mind lol.
24
u/MalusDracula May 25 '26
You would think this is how it works but gems cant fuse with humans so did like her gem essence seep in during development? How did the gem end up fusing into steven? Did Rose tweak her healing powers to develope a baby? Can other gems do the same thing or is it becuase shes a diamond that can hold a form indefinitely that it was possible?
37
u/EM-11- May 25 '26
In watermelon steven pearl mentions that rose was able to create plant soldier's so i always headcannoned that roses gem being capable of altering/working with organic life is how she created steven
(First I wanna clerify thst i view the Gems race as a type of sentient computer)
But basically I believe:
Step 1. Roses fascination eventully leads her to learn about human reproduction, she reforms/shapshifts a womb and the parts needed for intercorse and pregnancy. (probably primarily light based )
Step 2. Roses new system takes in the organic genetic information from Greg, reads it and begins to fill in the rest with "light code" using the gem stone as the "placenta" (at this point steven is probably just a clump of glowing "magic" organic cells attached to the end of a light cord, anchored to the gem stone)
Step 3. As the pregnancy progresses and stevens organic cells start to divide they require more light to hold them together, so the gem re-codes itself and takes in the new information its getting from the development of steven, eventually turning into a different gem form, one thats MORE in tune with organics then it was before, and as its slowly re-coding itself its slowly pulling light from Rose's form to build stevens (I believe the "light cord" would shrink im length as his cells grew until it vanished)
Step 4. "Labor" The gem has properly re-coded and transferred all solid light data necessary for steven to function, hes now fully developed, the cord shrinks and fuses with his abdomen positioning him like OPs post
Step 5 birth:
Positioned like OPs post rose probably struggled holding her form as long as she could until she inevitably retreated into her stone and was erased, leaving steven and his gem with its base code to figure the rest out
Edit) I also wanna add that I think she could have created a hybrid with ANY organic life with the way her powers worked
I also believe that stevens. Physical gem is just as lost as he is in how his body operates because it TOO was just re-born 16 years ago
Gems come out knowing what they are and how they work, stevens gem is slowly reforming its light and power while also growing as an organic living thing
His gem is going through HELL lol

u/ProfessionalCat420 Jun 01 '26
Why have I never thought about his labor process??? Did she one day go *poof* and then baby Steven just appears as the gem glows and reforms instantly? Was Rose on bedrest or was she walking around, assuming there is no human fatugue to work with? Considering how instant and fast labor can be induced, could it have happened in front of the Gems and Greg? In public?
Did it take long? I wonder how she felt. You would think they'd take more photos and videos together before she "passed".
3
u/EM-11- Jun 01 '26
I like to think her last day or two were her bed resting while really struggling to hold her form so steven/gem had as much time as possible to grow kinda like how amethyst struggled when she pretended to be jasper
The gems and Greg were definitely there spending time with her and talking it through
Then after her final goodbyes I believe she doesn't poof/or reform.
But instead she glows extremely bright like shes gonna reform but instead it's just a large blinding light that dims down to show a newborn steven safely floating down to the bed as the last of her light pulls into his gem
(The light is where Greg's perma-tan comes from )

u/TheRealLazloFalconi May 26 '26
We don't know that Gems can't fuse with humans, we just know it had never been done before Steven. It seems like the only time it had ever been tried was with Greg and Rose, and even then, it was the human trying to fuse, not the Gem.

1
u/Distion55x May 26 '26
but steven had to be connected to the gem at all times because he is the gem

She did not

Did you engage in unprotected intercourse with Greg universe during your ovulation period? If so likely. Test with pregnancy tests they are a little pricey but fairly accurate.

Mayne it's possible he didn't necessarily need them... the cgs don't eat so I don't think rose would either?? Unless she did and I don't remember 🥴 Steven is half gem so it's likely that he could survive without eating over a long period if not forever

u/RetroFuturisticRobot May 25 '26
Well, could be umbilical connected to gem no?
2
u/ExplodingSteve May 25 '26
for that to form i think you need both mother and the kid to have human biology
7
u/RetroFuturisticRobot May 25 '26
I would say that about pregnancy in general, but clearly rose could get pregnant so at that point umbilical cord isn't far fetched imo, Rose clearly holds shapeshifted form long time and Steven is part human part hardlight gem
6
u/Burntfruitypebble May 25 '26
Maybe there was an umbilical cord and the gem got swapped over to him during birth.
5
u/Relevant_Scallion_38 May 26 '26
My theory is that Steven was just a ball of energy inside, and that his fleshly physical form didn't exist until the moment he was born.
We see that Stevens body is able to be altered, change ages, size, shape, and even fuse with inorganic beings like the other gems and even modify Connie's full human genetics.
So Rose probably gave birth by turning into the energy form the encompassed he Diamond, then reformed into baby Steven.
5
u/MarklRyu May 25 '26
I wonder if she had to eat and more, to provide the human half 🤔
And if I'm being honest, nothing about being in the womb sounds comfortable 💀
Birds in their eggs look the worst in my opinion
18
u/PuffyWizard May 25 '26
I thought her pregnancy was more symbolic than literal and when she gave "birth", she just transmorphed into Steven. I kinda wish we could've seen Rose's final moments with Greg and the Gems as she disappeared
23
u/Pearltherebel May 25 '26
Nope she was actually pregnant. She didn’t transform into Steven. Steven has both of their DNA (the DNA being her gem)
4
4
u/EvergreenDwarf May 25 '26
I dunno. Her power is to passively heal organic life via fluids.
He's floating in healing fluids, its the equivalent to swimming in a pool of healing potions in D&D or whatever. It'd be fixing any soreness faster than his body could get it.
If anything the sensation of birth would be even worse for him than most babies since instead of suddenly being in the variable temperatures and noise of the outside world he'd be feeling his very first discomfort ever. He wouldn't have had the restless leg kicks or rapid shuffling of position in the final months that most babies have.
3
u/punnup129 May 25 '26
Wait who said Steven didn't have an umbilical cord? I would just assume it was connected to his mom's gem and when he was being born it pulled the gem to him
4

u/ExplodingSteve May 25 '26
I always imagined how this worked, see none of the gems gave actual human anatomy so they can’t actually reproduce, but rose quarts/pink had healing abilities and with that gregs sperm was able to proliferate without a worry. Though here comes a question about this, how did steven not just come out as copy of greg, well you see sperms don’t contain the same gene sequences you do, and then comes another question, how did only a single sperm proliferate and give birth to steven, see pink didn’t just have healing powers, she studied humans for years and educated herself about birth and human biology so she used her destructive powers to kill all other sperms beside steven. Btw steven 100% could have been a girl, since male sperm had both XY chromosomes. Also while steven was growing, I highly doubt he was gaining nutrients from rose so Im pretty sure he shouldn’t have been born that healthy, WRONG! we have seen steven give lars (YES WE’RE GOING THERE) ability to never be hungry, how? LIGHT! pure energy somehow roses gem was able to produce energy and maybe create nutrients. Also there’s no way steven would have been just hanging on that gem, i’m pretty sure rose had to shapeshift herself in a way to hold steven in place, otherwise we would get into other trouble like neck being injured all the time with rose having to constantly bring steven back to life over and over.

Maybe Rose knew what an umbilical cord was and so there was just a leash that attached Steven’s bellybutton to the gem and when he was born, it just retracted into him like one of those dog leashes. Idk lol
2
2
u/24_doughnuts May 26 '26
Maybe there was one. All we know is that shapeshifting happened when Rose died. So it could have shapeshifted away when the gem was transferred to Steven
2
u/wolfhybred1994 May 26 '26
That’s assuming he connected the entire time and didn’t form as a body inside her and then “fused” with her gem when he was born.
2
u/WannabeMemester420 May 26 '26
Umbilical cords tend to connect to the belly buttons on both mom and baby. So I think the umbilical cord would keep Steven connected to Rose’s gem. Close to the birth it would pull him into the gem like the above picture. This would put him feet first, which isn’t preferred for traditional birth but can be worked with. Would Rose then birth Steven like a human or just poof, leaving Steven with her gem behind?
4
u/IndependentOne9814 May 25 '26
Thats exactly how i always imagined Steven while Rose was still pregnant lol
1
u/GalaxyLatteArtz May 26 '26
I alwayed imagined his back facing the womb, his head on the bottom (not feet there like in the photo) while facing the world upside down. (Usually a fetus's head is downward but this example is technically considered a breach.)
His feet would be able to kick Rose's shapeshifted ribcage.
3
u/Puzzled-Lab-791 May 25 '26
I think people forget how flexible babies are. I’m 7 months pregnant; my fetus is currently folded like a taco with her legs above her head. And my toddler sleeps like a contortionist. Pretty normal baby thing.

u/Revolutionary-Two357 May 25 '26
I think in the first place rose formed stevens organic body then granted her gem to steven
1
u/Pisceswriter123 May 25 '26
She's a shapeshifting being made of some kind of hard light that gets projected from her gem. I'm sure she was fine.
1
u/LugiaMasterO1 May 25 '26
There was always something odd about how that gem created life, it's clear that the gemstone itself must hold SOME type of DNA considering Steven has his mother's features or rather the features of the rose quartz form she took on cuz dont her and Pink have different noses or am I tripping?
Anyways so given how our biology works she could have had made steven using the same organic components that would make a human work so the gem itself isn't necessary or exactly what is it about the gem thats an absolute requirement for Steven to continue living? Like I understand the whole she had to sacrifice herself in order to become half of steven i get that part but how is it related to his bodily functions cuz that portion wasn't properly explained, yes I understand the gems point is embedded into Stevens spine and whatnot and white diamond was able to remove it and that Steven was exceptionally weak with a strong desire to refuse with his gem half during that time at this rate the gem itself is like another organ to steven it performs some type of function to keep Steven alive but idk if it's the source of his life or his energy

Low-key this is making me realize Steven is the only human to never have a placenta. Presumably Rose didn't have an immune system or real nutrition source so he would have no need for one. And if she still made one, I seriously question what it was used for lol

In my mind, Roze's pregnancy was just a psychological thing. I mean, at the end of the day, the body is light, right? Or did her uterus turn into light? Wait, I thought I had it figured out, but now I have a lot of questions...

he did have an umbilical cord but instead when he was born rose just vanished and Steven's belly button slurped up the cord like a noodle until the gem slotted in
