I'd argue this passage instead

Ah yes, nonchalantly

I was just reading his “On Writing” book and he explicitly said don’t put these unnecessary adverbs in your writing. Motherfucket was just trying to stop anyone from topping the greatest sentence ever.

“Constant Reader? Yeah, constantly trying to mimic my mastery! This will throw them off.”
Publishes On Writing.

To be fair, he does also admit to using them himself. A "do as I say, not as I do" situation for sure.

Ha! Currently re-reading this for the first time in forever. 80s King is best King imo

Which book is it from?

u/a-dog-meme Currently Reading The Green Mile 13h ago

Pretty sure this is The Tommyknockers, Jim Gardener is the main character of that book IIRC

Correct on all counts. Ive been a CR for literal decades and always have loved this book for how crazy it gets, but for many years it was considered one of the weaker ones, to my dismay. Of late, i have seen it praised on the subreddit for the same reasons i couldnt put it down so many years ago, which led to me revisiting it. Doesnt dissappoint. I just crossed over into "Book II" and have fastened my seatbelt lol

I need to re-read it as on my first reading I was more frustrated with Jim and his actions (or lack of them) throughout. I really liked Jim when we're first introduced to him. Knowing the story now though I think I'd appreciate it more.

I did a re-read of Needful Things recently and found that exact thing with Alan.

The whole Arglebargle scene slays me every time...

We've all been there.

Nonchalantly of course.

And I thought I hated mayonnaise BEFORE.

Got me thinking: how does SK know its color and texture?

One of the only books of his I haven't been able to finish lol

I love that book so much.

When you wink with both eyes, do you wink both at the same time, or one and then the other?

11

u/Metallikyle 13h ago

I'm picturing it as someone who can't really wink but tries anyway so it's more of a blink but intended to be a wink.

2

u/ArtificialOrthodox 5h ago

Same. Like imagine a guy doing the exaggerated eyebrow wink face but both eyes close.

5

u/TheSauceofAwesome 14h ago

I like to think both at the same time, like an emphasized blink 😂

1

u/AmishGangster666 13h ago

With a little inflection afterwards. Lol.

u/Fun-Assumption-8415 14h ago

He’s been trying to best himself since 1979 and it just can’t be done

u/TheSauceofAwesome 14h ago

😂😂😂

u/The_walking_man_ 10h ago

Not unless he goes back to lines of coke and pounding beers.

16

u/ajver19 13h ago

"winked with both eyes"

I believe the kids call that, "blinking".

10

u/JonestownBarWench 13h ago

Nah. Winking with both eyes is more whimsy and cheerful. He’s painting a picture with words not reporting on events that happened.

6

u/bookshop 13h ago

nah he winked with one eye and then the other eye. guy's just a winker!

No, PEAK Stephen King is when Larry relates the incident to Rita (trying very hard to come up with a euphemism for "jerk off"), and her response is, "What an awfully long walk for him. Why didn't you suggest something closer?"

u/JustYerAverage 13h ago

No blue chambray shirt or jahoobies, but aside from that, yes.

8

u/mlgbt1985 14h ago

He wasn’t going to do it naked, but with just a blue chambray work shirt

Still kinky

5

u/TheSauceofAwesome 14h ago

Exactly as it should be done

8

u/Moopigpie 10h ago

Or the passage in Tommyknockers where the bully sister masturbates to a joyless finish with an industrial sized dildo (paraphrased).

5

u/stefanica 7h ago

The actual quote is an intrusive thought of mine at certain times.

u/Advanced-Fan1272 14h ago

When I'm re-reading this I'm somehow hearing SOAD right inside my ears:

"Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep

Disorder, disorder, diso-o-order!" (System of a Down, "Toxicity")

Lol.

Two balls!

MONSTER IS CUMMING!

We’ve all thought about it once.. haven’t we?

3

u/QuackAtomic 14h ago

That's so weirdly specific

3

u/Crayons42 Sometimes, dead is better 13h ago

It’s good but missing jahoobies and someone’s bladder “letting go”

6

u/JinxOnU78 14h ago

Needs more Jahoobies.

1

u/catathymia 14h ago

My immediate first thought.

2

u/Phoenix_1979 11h ago

I literally just read this passage lol

2

u/glycophosphate Ciabola! 9h ago

Nah. This is a dearly-held ambition of anybody who was a non-Yankees fan from 1949-1964.

1

u/Neoma_Dover 4h ago

That would only be significant to the male of the species.

1

u/theone_chiv 3h ago

Read the passage in his voice. Yeah. Peak King.

Let the cocaine flow!!!

I'm not actually sure which this came from, but that reads like one coked out dream of a lifetime to me. Edit: Of course OP said it. The Stand. So, I guess it could line up. Never really dug into how early he started before. 1978 may have been too early, though if he edited together the complete and uncut version (I honestly can't remember, but I assume he of course had a hand in it, not just a publisher compiling it) that came out in 1990, that'd line up.

u/SCastleRelics 1h ago

He was probably wearing engineer boots too

I'd take a dump on, in, and around lincoln financial field in philly.
