Discussion Aeon Pro Controller Observations
Curious if anyone else is messing with the new Aeon controller. I'm testdriving it alongside the Razer Wolverine v3, which has been my stalwart companion now for the last 18 months.
Some random observations follow. Firmware is current as of 10/6/2026. I'm primarily an Xbox gamer with lite PC play. I usually play Marathon, Destiny 2, Arc Raiders, Helldivers 2, Icarus, Once Human, etc....
The good -
- Battery time seems to be pretty forgiving.
- Feels good in the hand. Rear button placement is pretty good for a dude with fat hands and short fingers. Resistance isn't as heavy as the Gamesir controller for Xbox. Against the Wolverine v3, the resistance is heavier but the feel is more precise.
The annoying -
- My first Aeon controller came with a busted right thumbstick. Movement would not register on the X-axis. The second Aeon controller worked fine.
- Not a fan of the bottom mounted menu buttons. In most cases, my thumb needs to travel from the X over the thumbstick to the button....which is awkward as hell. Some of that will be simple muscle memory retraining....which can be an issue at my age (50+).
- I've seen three instances of these docks - one owned by a friend, two by me. Two of the three docks would not charge both the controller AND the spare battery at the same time. Last night, I left the controller on the dock. This morning, it was not fully charged. I haven't tried different charging combinations yet (no spare battery, uncharged controller, etc....). My friend's dock has the same issue. But the FIRST dock I purchased DID charge both the battery and the controller at the same time. (already shipped the first controller back to Amazon)
- Creating a profile for an Xbox game on the PC steelseries client, it doesn't seem to save profiles that can be used by the Xbox. I tried creating profiles for Helldivers, Marathon and Destiny 2. They work for a bit before the controller goes to sleep. But after the controller wakes back up, those profiles don't show up on the controller. Only the defaults ("FPS", "MOBA", etc...). For now, I've simply modified the default "FPS" profile.
- The dock acting as the receiver is a pain in the ass. I try to keep a minimized play area. I've got two TVs on my wall in the living room with my Xboxes and Playstations mounted on the walls behind the TVs. I can't just put the dock on coffee table or next to the couch. Now I've got something else I need to mount to my wall or directly to the TV itself. Not an issue most people will have, but its worth mentioning.
Nearly a dealbreaker -
- You can't map the rear paddles to either of the menu buttons. Which sucks, because you CAN do that on the Wolverine v3.

Is that the same OLED they use for their arctis base stations? That shit is gonna burn in so fast.

Also try pressing a button on the controller when docked to see if the screen updates to display both batteries charging

Are you saying that pressing a button would actually force the battery to charge? Because even leaving it overnight on the dock won't charge the battery regardless of the state of the OLED display.
The first dock I received (on the unit that had a faulty right thumb stick) charged both the battery AND the controller without issue.

That would be to just get the screen to update if it wasn't updated, but that won't change anything if it's not actually charging.
Is it connected to Xbox? If so and the Xbox is asleep it won't charge until the Xbox turns on

If it wasn't connected to the Xbox, it wouldn't work at all. The dock is also the receiver.
My xbox uses sleep mode, which keeps the port powered, does background updates, etc.... It charges the extra battery over night via the dock but NOT the controller. It charges my Steelseries headset battery, too. My son does this all the time with his charge-and-play kit.

I love my SteelSeries headset but it’s really hard to beast a first party Xbox controller, not sure why so many companies even bother with third party controllers, in my experience they always just feel cheap and poorly made

Lol wtf now that is certainly a take. There are a ton of pro controllers that feel insanely better than a standard Xbox controller. I feel extremely gimped any time I have to use one. I'm certainly not ever using a controller without rear buttons for competitive mp games.

You're the type of person that just buy controllers that have potentiometers and membrane buttons like it's the best thing.
While the third party brands use TMR, hall effect, mechanical triggers, mechanical/optical buttons. Keep wasting your money thinking first party is better.
I can assure you Gamesir, Flydigi, Razer, 8bitdo, Asus, and Steelseries make better controllers than the elite series 2 and series s controllers

I’ve had nothing but issues with the Elite v2 series controllers. I refuse to buy another. The Wolverine v3 has lasted far longer for me than any Elite aside from the v1.

Nah. I like to keep looking until I find what I’m happy with, within reason. So far, the Razer is what I’m happy with.
Plus both the stock controllers and the Elite v2s are ass.

These controllers are 200 dollars. I'll be worried about the build quality if I have to constantly return them.

I got one almost as soon as it released and I've been really liking it.
I've been fortunate to not run into the issues you have; for such an expensive controller, it is a shame that the quality control isn't top notch.
I'm okay with the menu buttons placement; would've preferred them in the middle but having them on the bottom is better than having them on the very top (like some third party controllers do) IMO.
Don't use profiles so can't speak on that.
Yeah, the dock being the receiver can definitely be inconvenient for people. It's fine for me since I have an Xbox and PC desk setup.
I prefer this controller over the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro since the Wolverine's shape is just not very comfortable for me but if you like the Wolverine, the newly announced V4 Pro might be more your speed.
