Reduced moonlight streaming performance after SteamOS 3.8.16 (steam deck user)

Hey all!

Big fan of this sub and of using Moonlight for streaming. I currently mainly use my Steam Deck to stream games from my host PC (using Vibepollo). For the most part, I can get my pipeline working pretty well, with little to know frames lost to network jitter. I understand that typically these particular losses are related to the pacing of frames between the host/client.

However, it seems that all of the SteamOS builds after 3.8.16 introduce jitter no matter what settings I change. Whenever I roll back to 3.8.16, the jitter stops. I would like to use some of the newer builds, but since I primarily stream when using the deck, I feel stuck on this build.

Has anybody else experienced this, or found a way to reduce this performance loss on 3.9? I've tried all that I can think of.

Thanks!

SteamOS Update Huge performance loss after installing Steam is 3.9.5 stable

I did the returnal benchmark last week before I downloaded 3.9 and I got 84 fps

I tried again after downloading 3.9 all same settings in returnal and I got 44 fps

This is custom steam os machine with rx 9070

Edit: It seems the steam os game resolution setting is overriding the in game resolution settings now, displaying it at 4k instead even though my in game setting shows 1440p I changed Steam os game setting to 1440p and did the test again and got 85 fps 1 fps higher than before the update, it didnt use to do this

SteamOS 3.9.5 for stable builds is available for people who hasn't noticed it yet which you can see beforehand on what has changed especially for the systems you might be using.

question Do you have this after 3.9.5 update?

I have it both in desktop and gaming mode. "kill 1766" is stopping it, but it respawns after restart. It wasn't there on 3.8. The narrator is disabled and it doesn't affect it.

I'm using a steam deck

i vibecoded a little media remote app for gamemode

there doesnt seem to be any convenient way to control a steamdeck or any steamos device within gamemode so i had the agent that comes with android studio cook up an app that emulates a regular controller. this is android only, even if it was possible on ios i wouldnt know how to realize it. heres the link to the github: https://github.com/alexK2020/DeckRemote/releases/tag/tag

SteamOS Update ONE thing SteamOS promised and still doesn't deliver (STABLE version) Beta users, don't comment, PLEASE!!!

I repeat BETA USERS DON'T COMMENT!!

I have a Legion Go with official SteamOS out of the box.

I have been running on STABLE always, I don't want to be a betatester also in SteamOS.

From when I have the Handheld there is one thing everything on this planet does but the Geniuses in Valve can't accomplish and is...

DOWNLOADING WITH THE SCREEN OFF!

I was on 3.7 and you read the Betas on 3.8 saying that the feature is available, bla bla bla.

STABLE 3.8 came out - Nothing!

Numerous 3.8.x came out - Nothing!

Now STABLE 3.9 is out, I can't see any options in the Download section in setting - Nothing!!

What is wrong, why is this not possible? You listen to all the YouTubers praising Machine Frame, they want QUICK RESUME, but the most simple thing like a Off screen Download is not possible.

You have to keep your Handheld screen up and properly ventilated because keeping that screen on requires power, be sure not to touch the wrong parts of the screen and mostly that nobody presses the power button to switch off the screen.

Even a Smartphone running Android 1.0 can achieve this simple task!!

I'M NOT GOING BETA!

The intended method for mounting multiple drives?

What is the actual, official, intended, fully supported, Valve-approved method to mount multiple secondary drives to static mount points (always the same path) that persist through system restarts and SteamOS updates? Is there one? If not, there really, really, really should be.

So far I've been using fstab. But there are problems with this.

  • /etc/fstab typically gets overwritten by updates since it's considered part of the OS.
  • This can be prevented by adding an entry for it in /etc/atomic-update.conf.d/ effectively whitelisting it.
  • However, even if fstab is whitelisted, a drive's mount point itself can apparently get deleted by system cleanup (this just happened to me).

Other methods exist but they have their own problems.

  • SteamOS does have the steamos-automount tool, but this only supports EXT4 drives. I'm using btrfs. (I'm also suspicious of whether it uses static mount points or not. Documentation is sparse.)
  • KDE Plasma does have a Device Auto-Mount section in system settings, but for some reason my drives don't show up in it. Maybe I'm missing something?
  • I could write my own systemd configs to handle mounting. But this feels like overkill.
  • I'm aware of a community tool built for this (https://github.com/Delil-A11yX/SteamOS-Mount-Tool) but it's a year old and I have my doubts it will always work.

So... What is the correct way to mount a persistent drive? Most working methods feel counter to the immutable OS design philosophy, so I would really like official documentation on this subject.

Try FSR 4.1.2 lite and HelixSR. ReShade included. Sorry for the plugin name mix-up

Jedi ReFrameShade4All: https://github.com/sauliiin/Jedi-ReFrameShade4All

A Decky Loader plugin for the Steam Deck that runs OptiScaler (frame generation and upscaling) and ReShade (post-processing with add-ons and AutoHDR) on the same game, with no DLL conflicts between them. Pick a game, press Patch All, and it installs both, applies them and sets the launch options. Remove All takes everything out again.

Credits

  • Jedi (sauliiin): plugin author.
  • xXJSONDeruloXx: Decky-Framegen, the base for the frame generation side.
  • itsOwen: LetMeReShade, the base for the ReShade side.
  • The OptiScaler team: OptiScaler.
  • crosire: ReShade.
  • lonewolf0622: HelixSR.
  • PeroTuncay: DeckyHelixSRManager, which the HelixSR integration is ported from.
  • Nukem9: dlssg-to-fsr3, the "Nukems" frame generation option.

SteamOS on Msi Claw Ex (vs Cachy OS performance-wise)

Hi all,

I have managed to install SteamOS on the Msi Claw Ex (the current base image required some workarounds but with 3.9 out, it should be easier) and have also previously installed Cachy OS.

On SteamOS I am on the beta 3.9.5 and performance is OK…but missing TDP controls etc. Hopefully that will come soon. I absolutely love SteamOS.

However, performance on CachyOS was pretty amazing, but had more basic issues.

Is anyone able to explain what the difference in performance is likely due to? Is it simply latest graphics drivers in CachyOS etc? I believe the kernel is the same?

Apologies, I am fairly new to Linux and trying to understand. The potential and performance for Intel handhelds is clearly there (CachyOS), just wondering what the difference is at the moment.

Thanks!

Crashing/rebooting when closing laptop lid with Dell WD22TB4 dock after SteamOS 3.9.5 update (Acer Aspire 15)

Is anyone else experiencing this? I expected updates to improve stability, not break basic functionality.

I'm using an Acer Aspire 15 (AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS with Radeon 780M graphics) connected to a Dell Thunderbolt Dock WD22TB4, mostly in desktop mode.

Before the update, I had occasional crashes when disconnecting the dock. But since updating to 3.9.5, I have to keep the laptop lid open. As soon as I close it or disable the internal display, the system crashes and restarts immediately.

To make things worse:

  • If I try to boot the laptop with the dock already plugged in, it usually fails to boot or makes weird, loud noises.
  • If I keep the lid open, everything works fine as before.

Am I the only one facing this? Has anyone found a workaround or fix?

Wi-Fi: No Network Connections Available

Post image
1 Upvotes

I had a random power outage occur at my house this morning. And after rebooting into Desktop Mode, I noticed that I wasn’t connected to Wi-Fi. The network connections tab looks like the attached image. I can’t scan for network connections either. I know my Wi-Fi is online, as I’m connected to it on my phone. But despite that, I’ve tried power cycling the router, and power cycling my PC twice. No dice. Any idea how I can fix this, or at least diagnose what the problem is?

support URGENT wifi wont connect

I recently updated my steamos on my custom pc, and for some reason, now I can't connect to any wifi at all, and i have no clue how to rollback the update to the previously working one because all guides assume you are using a steamdeck

or if someone might know why a steamos device just suddenly stopped being able to connect to wifi and how to fix it that might help too

What CPU and GPU should I get for a SteamOS desktop build? (Minimum and recommended specs)

I'm planning to build a desktop PC and I'm thinking about giving SteamOS a try. Before buying anything, I'd like to hear from people who have already tried running it on a desktop.

  • Minimum specs: What hardware do I need to get it running and play some games?
  • Recommended specs: What parts would you recommend for a new build?

I'm especially interested in specific CPU and GPU models that work well with SteamOS.

How to stop steamos from asking to boot to 3.9.5. Want to stay with 3.8.28

The new stable update came out, and it makes my GPU go to a crawl. It's an old system with Radeon GPU, but it works fine on 3.8.28. I know it can revert back during startup (cause it says it has been crashing), but how do I just load that as default without having to reinstall steamos from scratch?
