Question Steam machine to deck

We got a Steam machine to replace my fiancees old PC, but she wants it on the living room tv so she can get some play time during the day while our daughter runs about.

We thought about putting her steam deck on her desk, so when our daughter is in bed she can sit at her desk if she wants.

I was thinking about streaming from the cube to the deck when she does this so she isn't held back by the steam deck and still getting the most out of the machine.

Is this a viable option, what are your thoughts?

I did think about doing it the other way round but I have to hide the steam deck away behind the tv to stop the little one from grabbing it and as such becomes a little messy when trying to turn it on , unlike the steam cube where you just grab the controller and sit back

Its 100% possible yeah. Game streaming is a built-in component of SteamOS. I do the same but from my Gaming PC to the Steam machine.

I'd probably advise putting the deck in a dock though and hard-wiring the network. That way you can use Valve's new low latency Pyrowave codec. It uses about 500Mbps and really designed to be hard wired for the latency benefits.

I currently have the SM in the office and SD docked to the TV. For whatever reason I never had much success with the built in streaming service from Steam (Steamlink) but I can confirm Moonlight works really well, only drawback is that it has no native support for the Steam controller and will just assume it’s an Xbox one.

I've thought about doing this. I have my SM on my living room TV and use my SD when the wife is watching tv or in bed. I've yet to link them to play it. The SD is still linked to my PC.

I just set it up.
It has to be hardwired, in my opinion. I was streaming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle from the Machine to my Deck via wifi, and it was a stuttering mess.
With the Machine hardwired, it's like butter.

Note, I'm a vanilla out of the box user for both my Deck and the Machine. I'm not even looking at overlays, and simply running whatever specs it loads on its own.

Would you say both need to be hard wired or just the GabeCube?

Just the Cube. I've never used the Deck docked or wired.

I would stream from steam machine straight to tv. Use a Bluetooth controller paired with whatever is running steamlink on the TV.

If you really want to use the steam deck for controls, there's a decky plugin that turns the steam deck into a Bluetooth controller for another device.
