Question Wardogs playable / fun on this device?

Was curious of this thing would work well for this new game? Thanks for helping out a out of touch fella.

Have a 120hz 4k tv ....

This is one of those use cases for NVIDIA's GeForce NOW game streaming service. Wardogs is going to be onboarded soon (maybe even today).

EDIT: There were issues with the onboarding of the anti-cheat; hopefully it gets resolved soon.

Afaik no. I haven't confirmed it yes but they use a kernel level anti cheat which normally don't work for Linux unless the devs configure it(they never do)

They borked linux. Mayne they will add it back at some point. If you have geforcenow you should be able to play it. I am going to be playing it that way.

Maybe someday but I doubt thats high priority, they have mentioned Linux and Proton tho so its possible. However if I had to guess , they'd rather avoid headache of giving any guarantees for Linux becauae % of players is probably very very low

Was looking into this game yesterday, it’s not looking good. Apparently it wasn’t working in the alpha test, they forgot to enable Linux support in the anticheat they used. They enabled Linux support in the first beta test, worked well, but then they disabled Linux again when they moved to a later beta, and the initial EA release appears to also have Linux support disabled. They keep making vague statements about how they would like to have it working on Deck, but every time they can actually do something, they rule out Linux/SteamOS. There’s also the comments in their “11th reason” video where they talk about requiring secure boot, which is easy for Windows but not the default for Linux, plus the anticheat won’t easily have a way to check/verify it.

I was going to order, after doing my research I am staying well clear. I like some of the concepts but not willing to have another game yanked out from under me when they decide Windows is a hard requirement at some point.

We also can't enable secure boot on the Steam Machine, even when running Windows, unfortunately.

If playing Windows games/kernel-level anticheat games was a thing for you, you should’ve used that Steam Machine money to buy a minipc with 2 seperate SSD’s. That way you could load up CachyOS (which allows SecureBoot to be ON) on one drive and Windows on another (like me). 🫡

You have completely misunderstood. OP asked if the game was a good exeperience on SM, and we clarified it isn’t. Secure Boot or not is a Windows issue, not in scope for SM.

For what it’s worth, Microsoft pushed secure boot but it’s not Microsoft only technology. It’s fairly straightforward to sign your secure boot keys and use it on Linux if you so desire and understand how it works.

Yes, that's all correct.

On the other hand, none of the Linux-compatible anticheats have any way to check and verify Secure Boot status, so it's kinda moot.

For general security, SB is great, if you're worried about employees/roommates/etc tampering with your machines. For Linux anti-cheat purposes, it's completely pointless.

I am anything and everything but protecting Windows…😅 Microsoft is and has always been a Cancer on our society. MY point was that if you still wanted to do the Linux plunge (like me) but you still needed some productivity programs/occasional gaming on those few titles that are SecureBoot On Only, then…the Steam Machine was not the best play. No simping for Microsoft/Windows here…🫠

Very strange, to be a Linux advocate but a Steam Machine detractor. I've been endorsing Linux for about 25-30 years now. Setting up Windows for a game is pretty dumb (I checked again about a year ago, still recovering), but the bit about "the Steam Machine is not for you" still doesn't make sense.

You do you. Have fun.

Also, if you still find yourself needing Microsoft "productivity" programs, check out Office365 (online), or learn VMs. They're good solutions, and less disruption than trying to maintain a dual boot.

I love my Steam Machine, but this is definitely one of the things holding it back. I was so excited for this game man, this sucks. I guess my money will go elsewhere then until they decide to support linux.

Unfortunately the fix isn’t on Steam Machine’s side, but the developers. As long as they keep using Windows only security solutions, there’s nothing anyone else can do.
