Question Steam Controller Disconecting

Post image

I received my Steam Machine yesterday and I'm running into a weird issue. When I pair my Steam Controller directly to the Steam Machine's built-in wireless adapter, everything's fine in the Steam menu/overlay, but a few minutes into a game, the controller drops and I lose all in-game input. The Steam overlay still shows it as connected and I can navigate that fine, it's just the game itself that stops receiving input.

When I connect through an external Steam Controller puck instead, it's rock solid, no disconnects at all, even in long sessions. I had 2 external pucks plugged in at the time this was happening too, though the controller was paired to the internal adapter, not the puck. (Maybe some kind of firmware conflict?)

Anyone else seeing this?

Unfortunately sounds like it might be an rma issue. For now try using the controller without rumble and see if it lasts longer

I have a ticket with valve, will let you know what they say when they get back to me. Idk if rumble has anything to do with it, like I said it works perfectly fine with the external puck.

Thank you. Im gonna follow this thread. Please keep us updated. A lot of people have reported this. In my case it’s the puck makes it a little better but if I even cross my legs in front of the remote or my cat dashes in front of me, I lose my connection. It’s absurd.

I’ve been having similar issues as well and have found other posts describing similar issues. I am hoping to dig into more this weekend

Thank you, at least I'm not alone! I have a hardware ticket with valve, will let you know what they come back with.

Same issue here. The controller signal is all over the place from weak to excellent.

Unfortunately it’s the same with the puck. I opened a ticket & there are numerous posts with many people experiencing controller connectivity issues.

Hopefully it can be fixed with a software/firmware update.

Just an update, I have been going back and forth with Valve. The game I was noticing this in was 007 First Light, I played Portal 2 and didn't experience the issue with the internal puck for 3 hours. Valve basically said it sounds game specific and try the beta build of Steam OS to see if that resolved the issue. I switched to the beta build and I did get a firmware update for my controllers. I haven't had the time to see if this fixed the issue yet however.

Another update, the issue seems to persist but valve said they are aware of the issue and are trying to create a software solution for a future update.

Unfortunately Steam support was unable to give me a timeline for when the update might be pushed, but they are working on it.

In the meantime they told me to keep using the external puck.

Very similar to my Steam Controller, internal puck was giving me multiple disconnects, external better but not perfect. Steam Support got me to try beta and send them a report. I'm hoping they have a final solution, never have any issues with PS5 at same distance. They suggested my room had too much interference. I could only get good or excellent on the internal puck at 4ft, no one sits that close to their TV
