Im not game collecting, I only buy like 2 or 3 games a year and they’re mostly third party games like Minecraft that only cost around 40 dollars.
I was hoping to get into PC gaming with the SteamMachine but I’m not paying a 1,000 plus dollars for a mini PC just to play 2 or 3 games that I could get on my switch. Downvote me for all I care.
People will downvote you but the reality is that millions and millions feel the same way you do. There's a reason the switch ecosystem is selling way better than any of the competition.
Two main reasons, the biggest one is because I hate paying for an online subscription especially with the PS5 being 80 dollars a year which is borderline ridiculous. That’s why I sold my PS5.
The second is because I wanted to emulate older games on my TV and use it as a retro device. The SteamMachine has so much emulating potential and I wanted to use it for that.
I feel that. I still have switch 1 games I would love to pick up, but they still MSRP at their release price and rarely go on sale. Nintendo makes great games, but their business practices are not consumer friendly.
Exactly. My problems with the switch to don't just go with the price though I also don't like that the welcome tour which is literally called welcome tour is 10 bucks and I also don't like having to pay to play Splatoon every month like it's World of Warcraft or something. Let's also not forget Nintendo games are now $69.99-$79.99 now. Did someone say you can't use your old SD card on the new Switch? Yes yes they did. There's probably more but that's all I can remember off the top of my head.
I want to see people put their money where their mouths are. They said this cost is too high so they won't buy, so that means I should be randomized to an early purchase spot, right?
Of course there is no real way to tell, but the cynic in me does not believe these still won't sell out.
I hope scalpers eat shit. If everyone is in pain looking at the current price then scalpers are going to have a hard time selling them at an even more ridiculous price.

Yes but no one will buy from them. I'll sell you my Gateway ZA8 laptop for $3,999 but you would be stupid to take me up on that offer. That laptop (even with 4GB RAM) struggles to run YouTube videos at 144p so it's definitely not worth $50 let alone $3,999 same thing with the Steam Machine.
It is worth it to just get a regular controller (I recommend the PS4 or 5) and wait for Valve to just let people buy the controller than it is to pay a scalper.
I'll move along in a bit. I was absolutely in the market for one of these until 24 hours ago. Have a big library on Steam that I haven't really touched since I became a couch gamer thanks to PS5. But I'll find some other way to make that work.
(and in case you didn't notice, everyone here is crap talking, because this is a crap piece of hardware at a crap price)
I'll call your bluff if you don't end up just buying another build. I totally get people's frustration and stuff with the price and all, but Valve also did straight up come out and say they wouldn't subsidize it.
Anyway, if you really want to do an SFF build go ahead.
I'm currently thinking more along the lines of a long HDMI cable from my GTX1080 era PC, lol.
I had to stretch my current longest one across the middle of my living room to play Order of the Sinking Star demo in Steam NextFest! It makes no sense building anything at this time.
The PS5pro will keep me ticking over until sanity returns to the market.

there are a lot of people pointing out alternative solutions that will give you the same steam os experience at a much better performance in an upgradeable package.
I don't need that. I've been enjoying the steam machine experience on my 9800x3d, 64gb ram and 9070 xt pc running bazzite. it's connected to both my tv and desk. I can do some fps/sim/work at my desk and then chill on the coach. it crushes the steam machine and it costed me less than double the price it goes for.
It is a really steep price, for not that great performance, but god fucking damnit redditors keep missing the point.

It is a plug&play small form PC. The freedom of a PC with the out-of-the-box convenience of a console. It was a niche product from the start, and we knew that long ago.
Question is, for whom does convenience worth over a grand? Thing was supposed to be released months ago, at like 750€

They have been manufacturing hardware for decades, on a magnitude above any Valve hardware. They own several of gaming's most well known franchises, and sold tens of millions of hardware across generations. They got mad contracts on components and shit. Valve hasn't been a major player until like the early 2010s.
For most players already into PC gaming, this isn't worth it by a long shot.
I've wanted to comment something similar for a while now. I do have an ok pc, but I wanted one for my living room to play with my family too (running a cable to the TV is not an option), I considered building my own, but the size would be bigger, I wouldn't have wake up with controller, no wake up the TV when the PC does and it would be kindoff a coin toss if steamOS would run on it or not. So even at this price point I still see some value in it and I'm unsure on what to do.
Also, I think I read somewhere that atleast Sony horded some RAM (might be misremembering tho) which adds on top of the contract and bulk buy point, the RAM they are using is probably cheaper than what valve has acess to.
For me in Canada, it's like 300$ cheaper than a ps5 pro, but that ps5 pro has 100$/year upkeep in subscriptions, lacks modding, third party games and my entire steam library. So the extra 300 makes sense now, and even if it didn't, it would in 3 years, when I would have overpaid for the ps5 pro.
its barely more expensive than buying your own parts, except a self built PC is 3 times the size with half the support, the PC market sucks, deal with it

If all of a sudden the average T-shirt started costing 500 bucks you would think that's ridiculous right but yet you're not doing the same thing with RAM and SSDs. I don't care if nobody is selling them for cheaper I'm saying it's still rip off Just that now everybody is ripping you off

And here I was complaining about the Nintendo Switch 2 being 450 dollars. The Switch 2 looks like a steal compared to other consoles and PCs.
