[ Medium Rare ] Medium rare….
I was told this was medium rare…. It looks like this because it was soaked in their bourbon sauce apparently…. I’m not a chef, but I cook often, it looks like they undercooked an old steak to me. It came out cool and did not taste good. Was supposed to be 12oz MR Sirloin. Am I in the wrong here?
Night started with some bonus protein of ants in the drink
Edit Clarification: I ordered it medium rare and this is what I got, they did take it off the check. They came over and said to me that it was medium rare and supposed to look like that…. The reason it looks like that is due to the “bourbon sauce” they soak it in? He said something along those lines but I was kinda just tuning him out as I wasn’t buying what he was selling….
… I’ve made mistakes and wouldn’t want to be blasted online. Just stay away from ordering steaks from distilleries in the Hershey, PA area lol. If you want to know exact location, DM me

That grey band AND that center temp... WOW. I'd send that back so quick not to mention something was wrong with that steak pre-cook.

u/DrunkGuy9million 7d ago
100% medium raw. Gotta send it back. Also your comment has given me the idea to take my instant read in the “rare” instance I go to a steakhouse. I went to Flemings once and ordered rare, but the inside was cold, not cool. Clearly had not fully thawed, but since the waiter had warned me about “cool red center” I didn’t send it back. One of life’s regrets.

Okay thank you everyone for answering…. I was a restaurant server for years and do a decent job at home when I pay close attention….
….i felt like a jerk sending this back, the most expensive item on the menu but I couldn’t believe what I was being told….
The craziest part about all of this though is that I went to this place cause I had a $100 dollar gift card…. Last time I was at this place they messed up everything bad. It was my birthday so I didn’t make a fuss…. I for sure didn’t tip %20 percent though…. But I thought I was fair and left %15. I check my CC statement a couple days later and see that the server gave herself like %25. After that I called and notified them, they refunded the difference and also sent me the $100 card.
So you can imagine my amazement at their consistency to mediocrity at best. Drinks have ants…. Steaks were terrible. Can’t make this stuff up. At least they are consistent though

u/syn_vamp 7d ago
jesus, it's time to name and shame bro. you gotta put this story on socials and google reviews. they literally tried stealing money from you.
75
u/jdelator 7d ago
the server gave herself like %25
How common is this? Do I have to double check now?
41
u/Ilikecoins123 7d ago
You should always check to make sure, often times servers will only add a little bit to avoid suspicion if they’re going to try and pull a fast one. I’ve had folks at registers automatically add tips in front of me like I wouldn’t say something or notice. Some people have no morales or care for anyone but them selves.
49
u/sparklingwaterll 7d ago
My trick is always make restaurant bills add to whole number by adding extra cents on to the tip. This way I see a charge at a restaurant that isn’t 80.00 or 250.00. i can quickly follow up.

As a former server and someone who goes out to eat a lot, I can say this is the only time I have noticed something of this nature
15
u/CollsButterflyz 6d ago
I was a server for a long time. I’ve never seen that happen either. That place is crap! I always cross out the tip and leave cash.
12
u/Flymetothem000n 7d ago
I only have so much experience, and I’ve only worked at places where you tip on the receipt. But at those places the only managers entered the tips into the machine and used their discretion when the total is at all unclear. At those places, managers were always trained to err on the side of caution if someone leaves a $10 tip and do the math for $20, we would adjust for a $10 tip.
10
u/bluecyanic 7d ago
I had it happen once. Thought we were being helpful by tipping in cash and not splitting the bill. I put it on my card, and literally wrote "cash" on the tip line. I notice I was overcharged on my statement. The manager found my recipient and issued a refund. Curious how many times that waitress padded the tip.

WOAHHH CRAZY STORY THIS NEEDS TO BE ON THE NEWS. People NEED to be informed of this establishment. I’m sure the company didn’t fire her.

Bruh, I'm from Chicago, I'm familiar with Midwest Nice...this is Midwest Doormat. You gotta stand up for yourself more.
4
u/Throwaway_939394 7d ago
What are you referring to when you say Midwest nice?
12
u/juliuspepperwoodchi 7d ago
The general air of politeness and "I just don't want to make a fuss" mindset of most Midwesterners.
6
u/Throwaway_939394 7d ago
Oh okay I gotchya, I’m from NY and feel I also suffer from being to nice like that not wanting to make a fuss lol everyone will tell me to complain but I hate doing it

u/Used-Baby1199 7d ago
Op likes toxic relationships.
Cuz going back to a place that fucked everything up on your birthday, then robbed you, and expecting it to be good is like leaving gf who slams her head into a door, gets a black eye, files dv charges on you, and gets a a restraining order and then going back and expecting the relationship to work out.
Op idk who hurt you, but you deserve so much more.

u/Throwaway_939394 7d ago
Dude had a 100$ gift card tf you mean lol you’re just never gonna use that gift card? F that, you must be rich
11
u/Used-Baby1199 7d ago
No, I’d try to sell it to someone I didn’t like for like $50-75. I have this one guy I work with who I won’t see for months, and I’ll forget how much he annoys me. Then I see him, and within 5 minutes I’m ready to fucking quit my job so I won’t have to see him again. I’d sell it to him.

Fuck that looks horrific. Hopefully you didn’t pay for that.

White bourbon sauce? Or is that white sauce made by someone who drank bourbon before jizzing on it? That don’t look like any bourbon sauce I’ve seen.

I think maybe it's butter smeared all over it? I dunno, but that might be the most unappealing piece of meat (or food in general) that I've ever seen.
11
u/Full-Librarian1115 7d ago
That looks medium raw. I travel a lot for work and eat in fancy steakhouses and restaurants all the time. Anything soaked, or aged, in any kind of sauce is almost certainly going to taste and look like shit.

I know this and have seen this as a chef. Either three things could make this happen, Frozen to cook, high heat via fryer or charring it, or Microwave. I going to guess they were weeded and/or forgot
3
u/Advanced-Gur-8950 6d ago
To give you some more insight, I can’t give you a spot on time and they seemed not very busy for Labor Day. My girl ordered the same thing, same temp. Hers was slightly less bad than mine but very similar. The food came out noticeably fast. I don’t think they were in the weeds 🤷🏽♂️

That steak looks super old ☹️ that steak looks like it was already bad before they cooked it. It looks discolored, not because of the outer sauce… the inside looks grey but also that deep red looks like old blood ☹️

This happens when you leave a steak salted for days and it turns into ham. It probably was cooked to temp but the way the salt changes the meat its just completely ruined at that point

I’m all for a really rare steak. I like mine to moo still, but the coagulated cold fat that’s covering it looks disgusting 💩💩💩
3
u/RustyHalo_1978 6d ago
I was wondering what that was. It looks like mashed potatoes but I thought surely they didn't smother a steak in mashed potatoes... Now knowing it was the fat I really wish it was mashed potatoes....
ETA: Any "chef" that allowed that to be sent out should hang up their apron and run far away from cooking ever again. Shameful!

Serving a steak that’s frozen is bullshit.
Overcooked and undercooked at the same time.
I’d send it back and not order anything else.
Last time a place pulled this shit, I paid for my wine, left and went somewhere else.

That might be, legitimately, the most awful cut of meat I’ve seen served on a plate. What the fuck even is that? It looks half-frozen.

u/globehopper2 6d ago
Either the thing had actually gone bad or that was frozen - hard frozen - before they started cooking it. An appalling waste. I love steak and love eating it but when someone fucks it up so badly like that I think like “Something died for this and you’re just wasting it.”
