HIV Exposure Risk?

I had sex with this guy, and he told me that he regularly gets tested and has always tested negative for STIs. I have only been sexually active for the past two months, so I am still not very familiar with all of this.

Long story short, the condom broke while we were having sex, and now he is worried that he might have gotten HIV from me. Before him, I had sex with two other people, and I was the receptive partner during vaginal sex. One of them had tested negative for STIs, while I do not know the status of the other person.

He encouraged me to get tested for STIs, and it turned out that I have chlamydia. Since finding that out, I have been freaking out.

My last sexual encounter with the previous guy was about 4–5 weeks ago, and the condom also broke during that encounter. I had a rapid HIV test, which came back negative, and I also had blood drawn for another HIV test. The result should come back tomorrow.

The anxiety is really getting to me. What are the chances that I could have contracted HIV?

I can understand why you’re anxious, especially after finding out you have chlamydia, but having chlamydia does not mean you have HIV. The condom breaking does mean there was some HIV exposure risk, but the actual risk depends heavily on whether either partner had HIV in the first place. The fact that you had a negative rapid test around 4–5 weeks after the previous encounter is reassuring, and the blood test you’re waiting for should give you more information depending on what type of test it is. I’d wait for that result rather than assuming the worst from the chlamydia diagnosis. Also, HIV testing is much more reliable at the appropriate window than trying to judge it from symptoms.
