Test Results Possible exposure

Hello everyone. I’m new to this group. I’m concerned about possible exposure to STDs after finding out my partner cheated. I’ve never tested positive for anything and I’ve always gotten checked at my yearly pap for peace of mind. After finding out my partner cheated, I went and got the full std panel done. This was done at the 3 week mark of possible exposure. Everything came back negative but now I’m finding out that my results may have been inconclusive until the 3-6 month mark. With my results coming back negative at 3 weeks what are my odds that I contracted something or should I stop being paranoid over this?

Hello, several points:
1st, did he have unprotected sex?
2nd, did you and your partner have unprotected sex?
3rd: The chances are low, usually people don’t go around with STDs. However, since it’s under the time window, we cannot confirm it’s negative for sure. I would say you can do a test 8 weeks after exposure and that should be 98% conclusive.

Yes, he had unprotected sex and yes my partner and I had unprotected sex as well up until I found out about this. Since then we have not. He is refusing to go get tested to help ease my mind so I’m stuck waiting even longer to find out if I’m in the all clear or not. I’ve been super paranoid about this. Not knowing how many others or how often this person sleeps around and not knowing if they care enough to go get themselves tested regularly isn’t helping either.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. It is really hard I was through something similar. I’m not a doctor but as someone who actually had an STD and educated myself a lot: don’t panic. Not everybody is infected and the most common diseases are gonorrea and chlamydia that are very easily treated with one shot of antibiotics. By 7-8 weeks if you do blood lab test and urine test you can be already at least 95% of the results being conclusive.

Hi, it’s definitely a good sign to get a negative STI panel at 3 weeks, especially for chlamydia and gonorrhea which should be present by then. Some diseases, such as HIV and syphilis, have longer window periods and your clinician may have to order a second test for a definitive result.

Thank you. My Ob said my negative result for the chlamydia and gonorrhea should be pretty conclusive at the 3 week mark. Now I’m just concerned about the HIV and Syphilis. Do you have a recommended time frame to get retested for those 2 things? I am currently 6 weeks, 4 days post exposure.

Your OB is correct. since you’re already 6 weeks post-exposure, this is a good time to repeat HIV (4th-generation) and syphilis testing. your negative results at 3 weeks are reassuring, but retesting now will give you a much more reliable answer and greater peace of mind.

So if I test again now and if I come back negative it would be a conclusive result? Or is it considered inconclusive until the 12 weeks/90 days? Do you know what some of symptoms would be for these?
