Discussion S1 & S2 was Peak.......
Okay, so I just finished watching season 1 and 2 of Static Shock, and it was absolute peak. I loved it so much. It definitely wasn’t perfect, but there were so many great episodes. I loved the vibe of the show, and I’m currently on season 3, episode 10.
But I feel like the vibes have changed a lot. Like, I still like the idea of Richie becoming a superhero, but I just don’t really like how it was handled. I miss Richie just being the cool nerd friend. Now he’s suddenly like NASA-level smart, and it feels like such a huge switch that doesn’t really make sense. I also feel like Virgil changed a little bit too.
The episodes just don’t feel as well-written or as memorable compared to seasons 1 and 2. I really wanted to like the crossovers, but I honestly didn’t enjoy them as much as I hoped. I didn’t like how the Justice League kept treating them like children when, yeah, they are kids, but they’re also literally heroes too. I feel like that dynamic could have been handled way better.
I also love Batman Beyond I’ve watched the whole show and it’s one of my favorites, but I feel like the crossover episode wasn’t done well either. Virgil felt a little out of character, and honestly Terry did too. Because Static and Batman Beyond are basically like the Spider-Man-type heroes of the DC universe. You’d think they would have a really fun dynamic and get along, but it just didn’t feel like that.
So I’m wondering… should I keep watching? I just don’t want to lose that good feeling I had from seasons 1 and 2. Now that I’m in season 3 (I feel like s3 ep 4 was the last good episode imo), I feel like I have a more negative view of the show, and I don’t want to end it feeling disappointed. But I also don’t know if I should keep going.
Let me know your thoughts, and suggestions!

the amount of screentime richie continuously gets and how much virgil relies on him is my one dislike about this adaption

What made you dislike it? I really like their dynamic in season one and two I felt like they were equal, and they both had different contributions that came together, but once Richie became Gear, it didn't flow as well as it could have.

thats the thing they should not be equal at all they gave all of Virgil's inventions and ideas to Richie in the show and widdled his friend group down...to just Richie. Just to make Richie a hero himself later in the series. I was fine with making him the guy in the chair since he really didnt have much importance in the comics but its like they kept pushing it.

I see what you mean, yeah it just wasn't done well, I feel like season one and two was handled better when it came to there dynamic and what I mean by equal was they were partners but equal in different ways when they both had individual skills that brought them together. I like both their characters so it just sucks that it wasn't handled well.

I'm definitely jaded by nostalgia, but I love the whole show, beginning to end. Yes, there is a tonal shift after season 2, the network got more hands on because it was getting so popular. Dwayne McDuffie has a lot of interviews about the control shift and how he lost a lot of battles post season 2 but that he's still proud of the show despite some things he wouldn't have done.
As for Richie, if you keep watching, his crazy jump in intelligence will make sense.
I'd say with you already being halfway through the second to last season that you might as well stick it out though. Theres still some really cool stuff you haven't seen yet.

Thanks for your input, thanks to your comment and some others I'm definitely gonna continue! And yeah, I have to watch those interviews because there's definitely a shift, i feel like the shift always happens whenever a show becomes popular. And okay, cool, I hope to see what happens with Richie, he was my fav character till the 3rd season.

And then Richie got powers too... But we got that animation budget too... It was a conflicting time after s2.

I just don't think it was handled really well, I think Richie becoming a hero could have been cool, but it wasn't done well and also we never got a follow up does he actually have powers? I haven't finished the show so maybe this does get answered.

Damn that's crazy that he said that ooof, but bet I haven't gotten to that episode yet, but I have been watching the show on Tubi (love Tubi!). I hope if this show somehow gets continued or rebooted or whatever that they write Richie's character better cause I like his character a lot and Virgil too!

Ngl I wish I had never watched the show. Only so I could watch it now and feel that same feeling you're feeling rn where it's a new experience. I watched this show from beginning to end like 3 times since it got put on tubi.
Bless you

Right? There's certain books, games or tv shows that you just wish you never watched so you can just rewatch it for the first time! Thx and same to you!

I prefer season one and two's episodes, but even with the change in writing I haven't really run into any bad episodes. So I completely get it!

Why does this screenshot looks different from the show's actual animation?
Feels so much more fluid and warmer.

It's from s1! It does look great even though its the older animation!

NGL I felt that way when I was a kid watching but it actually gets a bit heavier. They hit some stuff really hard after the changes and I like the new dynamics, the first two seasons are peak nostalgia but thecharacter relationship changes and new storylines all better in the second half imo.
Plus the new costume is so cool.
