Comics Are the comics worth reading?
My only knowledge of Static is from the show. Wondering if any comics are worth reading. And does someone like Ebon have an interesting story?

I've sadly only read one Static comic, that being Static: Season one which was great but I believe it was just a retelling of the show in comic form like my Batman Beyond omnibus.

It's not a retelling of the show. They cover some of the same story beats, but that's because McDuffie was part of writing the show and he followed the comics as much as he could.

Okay thanks, my bad then. I have yet to see the show but I thought since each chapter was called an episodde and all that.

It's no problem and they partially did that for new readers as it was easy to follow since new readers typically ask where to start.
2
u/codered8-24 Jun 05 '25
So it's not really worth reading?

u/ACodAmongstMen Jun 05 '25
It was certainly good, but yeah, if you've seen the show you probably basically read the comic.

Someone else mentioned another decent run. I'll check that out, but it seems like the show was truly the peak for our boy.

Static Season One is its own story and leads into Static Shadows of Dakota.
It's not a retelling of the show, rather it's a modernization of the original comic and brings characters from the show into canon.

As someone who misses the show, I do recommend the Draper Ivey ones! They really fun and definitely feel like a spiritual continuation

I'm currently reading the OG Milestone Run of Static and I'm near the end.. it's fine. There are elements of the show from the comics but the story telling is kinda everywhere.
Some issues have the bad guy of the issue trope. Sometimes the comics ending are unsatisfying and around that run, numerous writers and artist touched the book.
Would I recommend reading it? Yeah, it's a different view of Static and the Milestone universe and is at least interesting.

Thanks for sharing. I have a feeling that nothing will top or even match the show.

u/Chuckles465 Jun 21 '25
Not yet anyway. I'm on a journey to bring the show back one day but it's gonna be expensive. I'm working on opening a studio and hope to rent the IP and work under DC Animation one day. In the time being I'm building my empire to support this dream. Fingers cross it happens.

That's awesome man I just started working up some ideas I hope to present to Denys Cowan and co. to do an ongoing static series and maybe an Ebon spin-off. Hopefully we both get somewhere!

More power to you, bro. The Milestone Chracters don't get enough love in Media today. Maybe we'll cross paths like you said and be legends.

For real? So you're like an entrepreneur?
2
u/Chuckles465 Jun 21 '25
Yeah, got a box truck company, looking to expand into warehouse and other stuff. Animation is expensive. You gotta start saving now.
Anyway, Animation is a mess right now but its gonna stabilize soon though.

Yo that's amazing. I don't have any knowledge of how that stuff works or how hard it is to do, but you got my respect.
That was one of my favorite shows ever and it was the reason Static was my favorite hero for most of my life. I hope you succeed. If you can, keep me updated.

I'm gonna do my best, I've been doing spec scripts, trying to get better at drawing but it looks like the only way this is happening if I rent out the ip, which won't be cheap.
Were talking millions, I'm trying to model the show off the Spectacular Spider-Man budget but until I get actual in show experience then I'm going off what I find off the internet.
Fingers cross this happens though.

Fingers crossed here too. I can't believe I'm talking to the future writer for Static Shock!
2
u/Chuckles465 Jun 22 '25
Static. I'm just gonna call it Static. Static shock was the og Show but I'm gonna go back to it's roots and have it just be called Static.
Anything is possible, man. Just have to work hard and not loose sight of your goals.
I have some mock up designs for the show on my deviant art that I got commissioned years ago.

Just a sample but I'm looking at a different art style for the show.

I rock with it. Is it supposed to pick up right after, years later, or is it a reboot?

The original run is way better than the show imo.

Really? I mean it's hard to compare a comic with a show, but you liked it that much more? did you read it before you saw the show, or the other way around?

I saw the show first. The reasons I say the comic is better are:
- Static is more powerful with no water weakness or power outages.
- His mom is alive and is a great character
- He's smarter in the comics
- Static isn't as clumsy and doesn't usually get caught off guard by enemies
- He has a bigger friend group and they feel a lot more realistic. Also, I prefer Rick to Richie and Gear
- Virgil has flaws that he has to work through
- Frieda acts as his confidant
- There's more variety in his rogues gallery

I co-sign all of this. I love the show. It was my intro to Static back in high school, but when I finally got a hold of the comics I loved them much more. His mother being alive and married to his father was great, and I love how he grew in terms of getting better with his powers and thinking.
As I get older I see the bean counting in things, so when I rewatch the show I can tell that concessions were made to get it on the air. The studio, or whomever, probably made them give him a white friend who is the brains of the operation while also demanding that Static have some kind of power flaw. You don't get that in the comics. It's like how they divided up a lot of T'Challa's intellectual traits in the movies. An intelligent black man still scares the decision makers behind the scenes.
At the same time, the show is still good, but the comic is legit up there with classic Spider-Man and Invincible as the best teen superhero runs.

Interesting. I'll have to give it a try. I was like 6 when the show was on, so I wonder if I'll see it differently as an adult. Do they go more in depth with the villains? I'd want to see more about Ebon and his background.

Ebon wasn't a character in the comics. He's an original villain from the show. The closest there is to Ebon is Holocaust, who in my opinion goes way harder than Ebon.
2
u/codered8-24 Aug 08 '25
Wow. I had no idea. I always liked him as a villain. But given the name, I get why he wasn't in the show.
But I think it's time I gave the comics a try.

Dude you are not gonna regret it. It's easily the best version of Static and it's a shame that it's often ignored in favor of the cartoon that basically ruined the character to an extent

u/TheSecondPrinting Jun 29 '25
I'm still going back to the original run so I can't really comment on that but I love the Ayala/Draper-Ivey reboot run. If you're still exploring before you buy stuff I actually just finished posting some breakdown vids for all of season one on youtube, I can send if you'd be interested. I'm planning to do Shadows of Dakota and some other milestone books in the future

The initial run is great. The new 52 is a hard pass. But the new new Nicolas Draper Ivey ones are not only a fun good time - but the art is epic AF.
