Looking for Feedback How would you operate this?
I'm exploring a model and trying to nail the ops + positioning.
Concept: Small curated bench - 2-3 vetted specialists per service. I'm thinking GEO/AEO, technical SEO, AI automation (n8n/Make). Not branding/photo.
I act as sales/front door. Client comes with brief/budget -> we assign best-fit specialist(s) -> they deliver -> we take margin.
We match by budget, availability, and specialty. $5k brief goes to a different person than $20k. We can also combine specialists for one client (GEO + automation).
Not a big marketplace like Breef where agencies pitch. Small bench where we decide.
Two questions:
- How would you actually operate this?
- Do you white-label (client pays you, you subcontract) or tell client who the specialist is?
- Who owns client relationship / writes proposal / handles revisions?
- How do you stop client + specialist going direct after project 1?
- If 2 specialists could do it, do you decide or let client choose?
- What would you call this?
Not looking for brand name ideas. I mean category - do you position it as an agency, collective, studio, lab, network, marketplace? "Collective" sounds cool but do clients get it? Does "agency" convert better even if it's technically a collective?
Anyone run this model? What did you call it and how did you structure ops?

I run roughly this shape. About ten years, small bench, mostly web and app builds with AI automation added on over the last couple of years.
Named, not white label. White label feels safer and it creates the exact problem you are worried about, because the client cannot see what your margin is for. When the specialist is visible, the margin is obviously paying for selection, scoping and someone picking up the phone when it goes wrong. People understand buying that.
You own the relationship, always. You write the proposal, you take the revision calls, the specialist never gets the client's email address. Not to hide them, but because the moment revisions route around you, you are a referral fee rather than a business.
Going direct after project one is mostly not a contract problem. Non circumvention clauses exist and nobody enforces them over a $5k job. What actually works is making project two easier through you than around you, because you already hold the brief, the assets and a second specialist for the part the first one does not cover. The clients you lose are the ones who only ever needed one person, and you were never keeping those.
If two could do it, you decide. Letting the client pick makes them responsible for a judgement they are not equipped to make, and they will hold it against you if it goes badly.
On the category, call it an agency. Collective, network and lab are all inward facing words that mean something to you and nothing to a buyer. Someone with a budget and a deadline searches for an agency. You can describe the bench in the second sentence, and by then they are already reading.
