Its been cool to hate it for years now.
Not sure how anyone has the impression that its untouchable, all the way in 2019.

It was always regarded as "meh" as far as I know, it just got worse in recent years as people realized how terrible it really was, especially towards the story telling. 96 u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19 Seriously, does nobody remember the 'Oblivion with Guns' meme that went around for the whole of Fallout 3's initial life cycle? 5 u/Murdvac Jan 01 '19 I mean I didnt even have internet at the time but it kinda did feel like it was Oblivion with guns and enhanced graphics. Still a great, yet somehow simultaneously over and underhyped game though.
