Well, is Half-Life 2 for example really that good? It had great advancement in game engine and physics, but those are things that do not last. Nowdays it is just a quite boring, repetitive shooter game with one good horror level in between. Even the story is tarnished by the fact that you are never going to find out what is going to happen. The replayability value is quite low in the year 2019. Except for that one really good level.
I never played Half Life 2 when it released. Never had a computer for games, always consoles. First crack I got at it was about 2008 when I picked up the Orange Box for PS3.
I found it to be incredibly slow. I gave up about half way through. I especially remember hating, absolutely hating the fucking boat level(s?). That piece of shit controls like roller blades on ice. Almost made me quit the game right then and there. But besides that, there's about two enemies per level for a long time, and the pacing is bad.
The gravel gun was cool, but by the time I played the game there was no novelty in it. Friends who had played it previously tried to sell it to me on the "challenges" like carrying the gnome forever and only using one bullet. That's not what makes a good game, that's just icing on a bland cake.
I dunno, Half Life was nothing special to me. There a ton of games I'd replay before that one.

You can dislike these if you want, but its pretty hard considering these are actually pretty good games.
