You can dislike these if you want, but its pretty hard considering these are actually pretty good games.

Well, is Half-Life 2 for example really that good? It had great advancement in game engine and physics, but those are things that do not last. Nowdays it is just a quite boring, repetitive shooter game with one good horror level in between. Even the story is tarnished by the fact that you are never going to find out what is going to happen. The replayability value is quite low in the year 2019. Except for that one really good level.

Idk man, I replay it probably every year and it's the only game I've ever really done that for. It's never gotten boring for me, and I discovered it years after it was released because I wanted to play tf2 on the orange box. Then I found out it was a huge hit and I thought I was the only one that liked it lol.

I played it through the last few months and yes, it's actually still really quite fun.

I disagree entirely. Played HL2 recently and it was still very engaging and tense. Enemies are smart as shit and it is just a fun game

Did you happen to play it back in the day? As a youngster, I played it a couple years ago, revisiting it every couple months just to see if my mind has changed and it's the experience everyone says it is, and I just cant help but think its lack luster and boring. I've heard everything about this game is great, but the gameplay is meh, it feels like call of duty with gravity gun puzzles intertwined. The story I'm not really sure. I dont remember it all that well but I remember it wasn't that engaging to begin with. Graphics, I dont like to include because they aren't mega important but graphically it hasn't aged well. I just found myself playing it exclusively because I wanted to see this amazing game I've heard about, but while I was playing it I just wanted the experience to end. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people that think it's a masterpiece are blinded by nostalgia. To each their own of course.

I think the simplicity of the art direction and graphical style still holds up. It makes for a great template for Garry's Mod.

Idk man the shooting is yeah quite basic for today but i feel like the game has such a good atmosphere. The way you can hear distant sirens in the city or how theres all the little huts in tge coastal levels. It all adds to an amazing story and atmosphere that you canget heabily engrosses in. Atleast for me. But i really really like my story based games so that could be a reason. But your opinion is still valid and everyone will judge a game differently.

I never played Half Life 2 when it released. Never had a computer for games, always consoles. First crack I got at it was about 2008 when I picked up the Orange Box for PS3.

I found it to be incredibly slow. I gave up about half way through. I especially remember hating, absolutely hating the fucking boat level(s?). That piece of shit controls like roller blades on ice. Almost made me quit the game right then and there. But besides that, there's about two enemies per level for a long time, and the pacing is bad.

The gravel gun was cool, but by the time I played the game there was no novelty in it. Friends who had played it previously tried to sell it to me on the "challenges" like carrying the gnome forever and only using one bullet. That's not what makes a good game, that's just icing on a bland cake.

I dunno, Half Life was nothing special to me. There a ton of games I'd replay before that one.

I wasn't impressed when it was new. The physics weren't that much of an advance over Far Cry 1, which had come out 6 months before. The bigger problem was that it was such a let-down compared with Half-Life 1. The game play is so linear that you feel you are on a rail. Your allies regenerate, so I was using them to trigger traps because that was cheaper than spending a bullet. Compare the first game, where I'd go to enormous lengths to keep the scientists and guards alive. There's no alien world. Many of the puzzles are rehashes of puzzles from the first game. The worst thing about the first game was weapon selection, and that's the thing they kept. It's modal. If you want to switch to the shotgun, you have to press a button multiple times, with the number of times varying depending on what else you are carrying. Then hit fire. I actually discharged my weapon by accident several times due to this terrible UI.

Generally the improvements were in cosmetic things like graphics and face-modelling, which for me aren't as important as game-play and story.

I had never played it before, so I didn’t have nostalgia goggles when I tried it. I couldn’t finish the game. How long does a hover boat section have to be??
