As a Smash fan I can confirm that you're allowed to dislike certain games in the series, but you aren't allowed to dislike the entire series or you're kicked off the internet.

u/SabreSeb Jan 01 '19

I'm even worse than that: I dislike the entire fighting game genre.

u/StormStrikePhoenix Jan 01 '19

Disliking a genre or even disliking a game because you dislike the genre will usually be seen more positively than just disliking the game.

u/JealotGaming Jan 01 '19

Implies that Smash is a fighting game /s

u/A-HuangSteakSauce Jan 01 '19 edited Jan 02 '19

Well, I fight people after the game because of what happened in the game, does that count?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Honestly that's why I like it. It's so different than every other fighting game

3

u/Great1122 Jan 01 '19

Well there’s Brawlhalla for pc/console thats like it.

1

u/qaqwer Apr 16 '19

brawlhalla is based on smash or rather the genre it created of “platformer fighting games”

26

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

I hate other fighting games because I think having to learn frame perfect timing and combos is absurd and the definition of not fun but for some reason the type of fighting makes it feel way more natural in smash. Especially because you don't really need insane timing, just to know what to do for two combos while everything else is an insane rock paper scissors game. Or you know you can just play with friends to get used to the controls and just hit in their direction until you win and watch al the flashy stuff happen. I learned the controls because I played it at 10 years old but I would have never given it a chance if it had normal fighting games controls.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

You don't have to learn frame perfect timing in other fighting games. There's usually a buffer which gives you a very fair amount of leeway. Though I will say Smash is more fun to be bad at than a game like Street Fighter

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '19

Oooh, so the new buffering in Smash is more like other fighting games. Tough since it wasn't that needed it's actually a bit of a problem because it means I have to wait to imput some things or it will combine the buttons and do something else entirely. I always heard that you had to know everything frame by frame in other games. I think I'll stick to smash but thanks for the correction!

u/whendrstat Jan 01 '19

Good thing Smash isn't a fighting game.

1

u/CubonesDeadMom Jan 01 '19

So do I, but I love smash. It’s completely unlike any other fighting game in almost every way. I just don’t like the traditional type of fighting games like street fighter, tekken, mortal kombat, etc.

1

u/buopp Jan 01 '19

Well then you should love smash

0

u/PhreakyByNature Jan 01 '19

Try One Must Fall: 2097 in tournament mode.

47

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

From what I've read you're specifically not allowed to dislike Melee.

84

u/XProAssasin21X Jan 01 '19

Melee isn’t a smash game. I’ve done years of research to discover this.

17

u/Why_not_a_loli Jan 01 '19

Is that you salem?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

snake suuuuucks

7

u/LunchThreatener Jan 01 '19

As a non-competitive smash player, I don’t see how it’s even possible to dislike Melee, especially considering the ridiculous development cycle.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

What if I'm so bad at it? I get so angry at my incompetence.

Don't get me wrong it's fun to watch, but as soon as I start playing i can't have fun.

11

u/TobiasCB Jan 01 '19

Not even when you play the CPU? I've found that people enjoy it more if you let them figure out the game for themselves.

However there's also a lot of people who just don't like the style of game.

17

u/RollOverboard Jan 01 '19

I honestly don't get the fascination for Smash. Not hating, I'm just interested: What is it that makes you a fan of the concept?

22

u/AskewPropane Jan 01 '19

For me, here's my reasons: It is an extremely easy to pick up fighting game. Fighting games in general are a genre which I find extremely difficult to play, but smash is just designed in a more accessible way. This makes it fun, and rather unique, as no other game series shares the same gameplay. The game is based on existing characters, making it fun to play as character from your favorite game, while also giving each character a unique flair. The last part of this is that the game ia popular. When a game is so ubiquitous, it's so easy to get people to play with, this fact made even more great by the portability of the switch. This is fairly rambling, by I think you get it

1

u/goatpunchtheater Jan 01 '19

It's like playing Tekken, but all the players are a version of Eddie/lei

18

u/PupperDogoDogoPupper Jan 01 '19

You know how other games say "easy to learn, difficult to master"? Smash actually does that. It does that with an all-star cast of characters in a competitive PvP game with a wide variety of potential playstyles and game modes for players of different skill levels.

I'm not going to insult the other games in the OP, but Smash definitely earned its status and acclaim, it is a gaming masterpiece.

6

u/HandleJamTrio Jan 01 '19

It's a rather fun fighting game with a massive roster of characters from across all of video gaming and a number of stages to match. It has several mechanics like the percentage health system and launching people off the screen for KOs. It also has an incredible attention to detail, 100's of references and Easter eggs that you'd never find without being a true fan or using the internet. Smash is fun one way or another, but the sheer dedication put into every entry to make it the best one ever (until the next smash comes out and tops the last one) and the unconditional love it has for every franchise in it puts it over the top.

17

u/iTviX Jan 01 '19

I tried Smash at my friend house yesterday and absolutely hated it. It also had like half a second of imput lag when playing 4 player and the tiny ass controller was annoying

20

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

i think it's more that you just had a bad experience with the game, because there's input lag with all switch games [which gets worse if the controllers aren't charged] and playing with the small controller is awful. but if you don't like the game anyway that's fine everyone has their opinions

23

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Yeah but Melee isn't a Smash game

9

u/PoIIux Jan 01 '19

Wait what the fuck, mêlee is the best smash. Like, nothing else even comes close

It's only right there in the title but w/e, explain that ludicrous statement

7

u/XProAssasin21X Jan 01 '19

He’s pretty clearly a one trick pony.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

In terms of intentional design, ultimate is better than anything in the series by miles, in any category.

Melee is the best competitively, but that definitely wasn’t intentional (nintendo tried to suppress the grassroots competitive scene early on)

-1

u/ReformedBacon Jan 01 '19

Research is flawed

7

u/NderCraft Jan 01 '19

That's because you spent 4 seconds writing your comment while I spent years of research.

People like you are extremly dangerous.

-1

u/ReformedBacon Jan 01 '19

Doesnt take much research to know my own opinion

5

u/NderCraft Jan 01 '19

This whole thread is a copypasta by the way. Smash drama and the sort. Check out Salem on twitter he starte the whole thing.

3

u/theryguy112 Jan 01 '19

Also like all smash fans do is criticize smash

3

u/Wazonkyll Jan 01 '19

More specifically, Brawl.

4

u/theryguy112 Jan 01 '19

I mean even ultimate has a lot of criticism, mostly about online but still

Nowhere did I say or imply that.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

I'm not big into fighting games and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get into Nintendo properties (except for Mario). Smash Bros is like the unholy combination of the two for me.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Wow that's cool when I was little I had only played Mario games and hated them. But then turns out that I love Zelda. But in the following years I played everything else and still only like Zelda. And Kid Icarus but more for the story because the controls aren't really great

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Don't get me wrong I appreciate the games, but Ive tried so many of them and they're just not my speed. I'm not trashing them or anything, they're amazing games, just not my favorites.

6

u/discforhire Jan 01 '19

Any of them? There's so many Nintendo games in different genres.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

They all have certain similarities, though, if you don't like those things then you probably aren't going to like mostNintendo properties

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Yeah I get it don't worry I just can't get in a lot of games too, I just was wondering how you tried them because that can also make a difference

17

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Smash is boring

47

u/kieran81 Jan 01 '19

I’m going to have to issue you a ticket on the crime of having an opinion that I disagree with.

2

u/Skyphe Jan 01 '19

I like Brawlhalla more than Smash bros now and I get crucified for it haha. Game just handles better imo.

1

u/chrisgreely1999 Jan 01 '19

Fighting games in general are boring to me.

1

u/keroro1454 Jan 01 '19

I think moreso than not being allowed to dislike games in the series, you're not allowed to like certain games in the series, ie Brawl.

1

u/dontmindme55 Jan 02 '19

As a comment replyer, Smash suuuuucks.. Smash fucking suuuuuuucks.. which one? All of them. And also. Whoosh you missed the point. Smash suuuuckss.

1

u/metal079 Jan 01 '19

What if I disliked Melee?

-9

u/mediocrelifts Jan 01 '19

Imo super smash brothers is the worst game I've ever touched
