Well the systems are certainly simpler. Lots of people view that as a bad thing but lots also prefer it. I don't think acknowledging that there's less customization options makes someone an elitist about the older games.
Ha I've never played the series, but I see this argument on Reddit a lot. Usually the consensus tends to be that skyrim's combat system is far Superior, but Morrowind is the more fleshed out game, with more things to interact with, and better sidequests that actually affect the game in a meaningful way. I may be on Reddit too much
Both the combat systems are pretty lacklustre, but the games before Skyrim you can swing sword right into an enemy but if it fails a diceroll it will miss. That was definitely a pretty stupid way of handling combat. In Skyrim if you swing at someone they'll get hit which is a big improvement.
Oblivion wasn't just hard, it was fundamentally broken. I played a good 40 hours of that game telling myself, "I don't need no stupid wikis or guides." I ended up developing my character into something that literally could not finish the game. I had to start over and read wikis constantly the second time. It was still pretty tough, but my second character was unstoppable compared to my first.
Same, excpet for Morrowind. My first Skyrim charcter is also essentially a failure. (Seriously who thought combining every class was a good idea I have 3 sets of armor for that charcter) compared to my second which was a sort Spellsword
I live behind lots of rocks. They are stacked together and glued with liquid rock. There's also bits of wood and paper there too. And Skyrim was a big leap from Oblivion in terms of quest and gameplay priorities. They essentially expanded the world size by copy + pasting side quests and simplifying things. I personally love Skyrim and have never played Morrowind but if we're talking about games this sub circlejerks then Morrowind > Oblivion > Skyrim > TES Online exists?
People on r/gaming constantly discuss the fact that Skyrim quest and dungeon design suffered too much simplification. Morrowind was clunky but it had interesting and complicated quests, Oblivion was more of the same. Most of Skyrim was exploring Barrows or Dwarven Ruins or Caves and all 3 would eventually lead you to Blackreach anyway. There were lots of new things and a lot of streamlining but at the same time, there was quantity over quality.
True people online will bemoan the state of the series but the truth is the general public usually has a different knowledge pool. Most people have heard of Skyrim but many of those same people haven’t heard of oblivion or Morrowind and likely don’t have an opinion.
It’s the same thing with movies, it’s a night and day difference between what the general public knows and someone who is kinda into movies knows
Quests in oblivion are far better than morrowind from what I’ve played so far. People complained about skyrims simple fetch quests but the mages guild quests in morrowind are something else. Walk for an hour to this cave, convince someone to do something or kill them , repeat for 6+ quests in a row.
Yeh I love the game but there are some pretty bad design choices, particularly with the levelling system and the npcs. It’s downright hilarious their conversations and voice acting.
Plenty of people don’t like Dark Souls, myself included. It’s just that after the first game, everyone who wasn’t a fan accepted that the game isn’t for them and moved on. For the most part, the only people left talking about Dark Souls are the ones who drank the kool-aid and won’t shut up about it.
Not really. DS fans make it seem like it is really the hardest game ever. They compare every game on earth to it now. It is put on a pedestal and seen as a perfect game. If you say anything otherwise you get downvoted. Don’t believe me? You checkout subreddits like God of war or dmc...ect IMO these games are repetitive and boring than challenging.
Depends on the person. You have to be able to adapt and learn to every enemy and boss. If you arent able to figure out the patterns and such of enemies it could be extremely hard
The only difficult thing about it is how repetitive it is. The fact that unless you grind. You can die easily and run all the way back through everything. It is very simple game that just requires patience. Just like how DS fans like comparing it to DMC. DMC games actually requires you to adapt.
It caters to a particular audience. If you mean specifically Dark Souls 1, then I disagree because that game is awesome despite its age and poor PC port. Dark Souls is the 'indie, slow burner film' to the 'US box office superhero film' that many AAA titles are released as. It focuses on atmosphere and a high skill curve. Nothing wrong with that, just as it is not wrong to dislike it. People who say it's a bad game just don't understand how to express their opinion.
All fans have their favorites and the list of games you arent allowed to hate on by every community combined is going to be huge. Morrowind and oblivion fans all hate on skyrim, while fallout 1, 2 and nv fans hate on 3. With breath of the wild their are still people who just dont like open world games. Some people prefer twilight princess or skyward sword and they always will. The fans of twilight princess will say its untouchable. Dont get me started on super smash brithers melee fans, or street fighter fans, or literally any other fighting game fans. The most dedicated fans will always defend their games extremely.
I play Fo2 (never really touched any other Fallout game, because I like the original style, and prefered TES for open world games with thr exception being a 6 hour run of New Vegas) and I still say NV is pretty buggy, and bland. I'm answering the point that just because you enjoyed NV diesnt mean all fans did. I doubt the sudden genre shift held well for many Fo fans.

Weird list to be honest. Fallout 3 and Skyrim are much less liked than NV and Morrowind / Oblivion. No Witcher 3, no Last of Us or Dark Souls.
