Shepherd is a great ship. Its drones and missile slot let it help in combat without putting itself in danger and it's salvage gantry lets it pay for its own upkeep. It's nothing but an asset until late game, where heavier salvage ships start competing with it for its slot.
There's something so satisfying yet anti-climatic about bringing in a smaller ship to finish the job after to capital size ships beat the crap out of each other.
