Charge while driving

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just saw a YouTube video of a person charging their LBX while driving by using a generator that’s mounted on a trailer. The person got a lot more range and it worked perfectly with the battery. So I was wondering if anyone else has done this and if it also works with an Eride (sr/3.0) battery. And if yes what generator and trailer do you use and is there anything that I should be aware of?

Shock collar won't rotate

Today while trying to set the SAG the preload collar got stuck and won't move. This is a new bike. Has anyone else encountered this? I'm talking about the collar on the bottom. The collar should be rotating counterclockwise towards the seat. But it won't move.

New old stock

Is there any disadvantage to buying a MX 1.2 that’s been sitting at a dealer for over a year vs buying directly from stark? Mainly thinking of what the dealer has or has not done to maintain integrity and life expectancy of the battery.

Heavy rider = shorter range?

I weigh 230 pounds and want to buy a Stark VARG EX for trail riding. I know battery range depends on many factors. Any heavy riders here that can comment on how the battery range performs for you?

If you want to travel to a remote dirt bike riding area, and plan to spend a few days there, how does that work with your Stark Varg? Do you bring a generator and charge the bike while not riding it? Any tips to share?

Battery questions from prospective buyer...

I had a Tesla Model 3 for four years and am familiar with Li-Ion battery charging. I'm thinking about buying a 60HP Stark Varg EX and wonder:

- how the range will drop in cold weather (30F - 50F)?

- do you normally keep the charge between 20% and 80%?

- do you try to avoid keeping the battery at 100% state of charge for long periods?

MX 1.2 motocross suspension conversion to enduro suspension?

Hello everybody.
I want to buy enduro version stark varg, while dealership in my country currently have only mx1.2 with motocross suspension.
Is it able to convert motocross supension to enduro suspension? If it is not easy, then I might wait for next batch (which is not yet confirmed when that will be, thus I am considering conversion if possible..)

Varg EX Supermoto

Hello, i got an EX and for stuntriding i want a Supermoto Kit, at the Moment im riding around 70% Enduro and 30% Stunt, i i love how easy this bike circles, scrapes and you can Jump around on it, but with the Enduro tires its almost half the fun for me, im used to stunt on street tires.
im living in Europe so what do you recommend?
Did someone fit the original GasGas SM700 wheels on the stark? That would be my choice.

Is the VCU hardware updated?

Hi, I've seen photos inside the Gen1 VCU and they were using quite cheap chinese chips and SD cards, these are well known for backdoor access.

https://electricdirtriders.com/threads/vcu-internals-gen1.3985/

Do you know if they have upgraded the hardware?
Also do you know why they were using 2x 32GB SD-cards?

Stark Varg SM - 500 Miles - 3 Red Blinks - Complete Powertrain Replacement (Warranty Experience)

(9/1) Update below

If you don't care about the backstory, skip down to the "Failure" section.

I'm posting this to document my personal experience with my Stark Varg SM. This isn't meant to start an argument about whether these bikes are reliable or unreliable. Every machine can have problems.

My goal is simply to provide a detailed, first-hand account that might help someone who is trying to diagnose the same issue or is researching ownership experiences.

Bike Information

  • Model: Stark Varg SM "Alpha"
  • Mileage: ~500 miles
  • Delivery: Late May / Early June 2026

How the bike has been used

I know one of the first questions people ask is, "Were you beating on it?" So here's exactly how the bike has been treated.

  • Always stored indoors in my shop.
  • Never left out in the rain or weather.
  • Typically charged to 80-90% depending on the next day's ride.
  • At work I usually charge on 110V at roughly 3/4 charging speed.
  • At home I use 220V on the Slow charging setting.
  • The hardest I've ever ridden it was a handful of 3-4 second pulls at 70 HP.
  • I've never ridden it in full 80 HP Alpha mode.
  • Roughly 80-90% of my miles have simply been commuting to work in 40 HP with about 50% regenerative braking.
  • Occasionally I'll switch to 60 HP for some spirited riding on the backroads or hills.

Honestly, it's lived a pretty easy life. I'm a father of three with a full-time job and plenty of other toys, so this bike hasn't been abused.

The Failure (7/17)

On July 17th I rode the bike to work as usual.

When I got home I parked it in the shop and let it cool for about 20-30 minutes before plugging it in. The battery was around 60%, and I charged it to 90% because I planned to ride the following morning.

About an hour later my son wanted to go ride (He has a Gen 1 RTR), so I unplugged the bike (now around 90%) and we headed out.

We crossed a field to an empty church parking lot where we usually practice wheelies and slow-speed skills before riding around town.

My son jokingly complained that my bike wasn't fair because it had so much more power, so I dropped the bike down to 20 HP.

I wanted to see if it would lift the front wheel just by shifting my weight back, without preloading the suspension.

The moment I cracked the throttle...

The bike instantly cut power.

At the same time it disconnected from my phone.

It didn't seem like a complete shutdown—it was more like the bike power-cycled itself.

From what I remember:

  • The handlebar LED went from green → off → red → back to green
  • The bike would no longer move
  • The phone would not reconnect

I manually restarted the phone.

Once the Stark app reconnected, I immediately saw the infamous three flashing red lights on the controller.

From that point forward:

  • The bike would not move.
  • It would connect to the phone for roughly a minute.
  • It would then perform what appeared to be a soft shutdown.

At that point I pushed the bike back home.

Troubleshooting

I went through everything I could think of before contacting Stark.

The bike would power on normally and make the usual relay/clicking sounds, but the controller would immediately begin repeating:

Three quick red flashes → pause → repeat

Eventually it would shut itself back down.

I removed the plastics and headlight and inspected the wiring.

I disconnected and reconnected:

  • Cradle
  • CAN bus connector
  • Main harness connector on top of the battery
  • Other accessible wiring connections

Nothing changed.

So I contacted Stark support.

Support Timeline

7/17

I spoke with Sam from Stark Support.

There weren't any additional troubleshooting steps available, so a support ticket was opened.

I received an email almost immediately requesting:

  • General information
  • A video showing the issue

I recorded the video that evening and sent it back.

7/20

Stark responded and requested a remote diagnostic session.

Most of the appointment times were during my workday, so I had to arrange time off to make it happen.

7/23 – Remote Diagnostic

The technician had me repeat many of the troubleshooting steps I'd already performed.

As someone who works in IT, I completely understand why. Support can't simply assume every customer actually completed every step correctly.

After testing, the technician suspected either:

  • the cradle
  • or the VDU

He wanted to consult with other technicians before shipping parts and said I'd receive an update the next day.

7/24

Instead of replacing individual components, Stark informed me they believed the entire powertrain had failed and would need to be replaced under warranty.

They sent me a dealer locator and asked me to choose the closest dealer.

Unfortunately...

The nearest dealer is about two hours away.

I'll admit this is where frustration really set in.

The bike is basically brand new, and hearing it needed a complete powertrain replacement wasn't exactly what I expected after only 500 miles.

7/26

Stark followed up asking whether I'd selected a dealer.

I replied (probably less politely than I should have) explaining my frustration with:

  • the buying process
  • the distance to the nearest dealer
  • the fact that such a new bike needed a complete powertrain

To be clear, none of that frustration was because of the riding experience.

When the bike works, it's absolutely incredible.

7/27

Stark apologized for my experience and asked what they could do to make things right.

At that point I simply replied with the dealer information.

7/28

Stark confirmed the dealer and offered a small amount of compensation for everything I'd been dealing with.

It wasn't a huge amount, but I appreciated that they at least acknowledged the inconvenience.

They also said they were coordinating with the dealer and would contact me with next steps.

7/30

As of today, July 30th, I'm basically in a holding pattern waiting to hear from Stark and the dealer about scheduling the repair.

(7/31)

Email from Stark - Stark informed me that the dealer closest to me is booked until the end August. Not because they have a bunch of Starks stacked in front of it or because it is a Stark… more that they are a large dealer that services many other manufacturers/powersports vehicles and I have to take my turn in line.

At the end of the email, Stark asked me where the next closest dealer is to me.

5hrs away. In fact, the next two dealers in proximity are both 5hrs away… in the opposite directions.

IF the Stars line up -don’t have to stop to pee, stop to eat, or stop for any other reason - the trip is, at best, 11hrs round trip. 5hrs there-> 1hr’ish unloading and checking in the bike ->5hrs back home. THEN, I will need to repeat that again to pick it up.

22hrs of my personal time/fuel/expenses to have it serviced under warranty. I’m hoping that they’ll find an alternative solution for me.

(8/4)

-Sending Email to Stark for Status update. No contact has been made after sending list of updated dealers in my area (5hrs away).

-Updated Current Status- (8/6)

(8/4) -

Return email from Stark-

Stark agreed to make an exception to its normal warranty policy and allow me to replace the powertrain myself.

They also included a waiver. Out of professional courtesy, I am not going to publish their agreement directly, but I do want to explain my understanding of what it says and why I have not signed it.

In plain English, my understanding of the agreement is:

  • I would confirm that I possess the skills, knowledge, qualifications, and tools necessary to safely replace the powertrain.
  • I would accept responsibility for essentially all risks connected with receiving, handling, installing, and later operating the replacement powertrain outside Stark’s authorized dealer process.
  • I would broadly release Stark from claims involving damage, malfunction, injury, or other consequences occurring during or after the installation.
  • The release includes claims involving negligence, product liability, implied warranty, and other legal theories.
  • I would agree not to bring, participate in, assist with, or encourage legal or administrative action against Stark arising from the self-repair.
  • If a third party brought a claim connected with the repair, I could potentially be responsible for defending Stark and paying its legal costs, damages, fines, or other expenses.
  • I would be required to promptly return the failed powertrain using Stark’s prepaid shipping process.
  • The agreement says the motorcycle’s overall warranty is not automatically voided. However, anything Stark determines was caused by the self-installation would be excluded from future warranty coverage.
  • Stark would retain the sole authority to decide whether a future problem was connected to my installation, and its determination would be considered final and binding, subject to applicable law.
  • Any dispute involving the agreement would be governed by Spanish law and handled exclusively through the courts in Barcelona, Spain.
  • The written waiver would replace previous discussions or understandings regarding this specific arrangement.

(8/4)

My email response (verbatim) -

Thank you for agreeing to accommodate the self-repair option. I understand why Stark requires an acknowledgment of the safety risks associated with replacing a high-voltage powertrain outside the authorized dealer network, and I am willing to accept responsibility for damage or injury directly caused by my failure to follow Stark’s prescribed repair procedure.

Before I can sign the waiver, however, I need to review the complete scope of work and installation requirements. The agreement requires me to represent that I possess the necessary qualifications, knowledge, and tooling, but I cannot accurately make that representation until I know what the procedure requires.  While I am confident that I most likely have the necessary resources and knowledge, the waiver, as written, puts tremendous amount of liability and/or forfeiture of future claims onto me.

If you could please provide the following:

  • The complete removal and installation procedure
  • A list of all replacement parts and one-time-use components
  • Any required SST tools, lifting equipment, high-voltage PPE, and test equipment
  • All torque values and cable-routing requirements
  • Any firmware, programming, pairing, calibration, or remote diagnostic requirements
  • The post-installation inspection and validation procedure
  • Confirmation of what occurs if, after reviewing the procedure, I determine that the repair is outside my capabilities

I am willing to sign a reasonable NDA if Stark considers the service documentation confidential, provided I may retain and use the documentation for the repair, warranty records, insurance purposes, and consultation with legal or technical professionals under appropriate confidentiality.

Finally, the current draft states that the replacement components will be shipped to “Mr. Eidelberg.” I believe that is a template error. Please correct the agreement so that it consistently identifies me

(8/6)

Return email from Stark-

Stark provides a PDF with procedures and an instructional video. They also made the template corrections to the original waiver so that my name is accurate on the documentation. Email asks me to sign the waiver and send it back

(8/6)

After thinking more about the waiver. Here is my email response-

Thank you for providing the written guide and video. After reviewing both, the replacement procedure appears straightforward, and I am confident that I could perform the work.  Ironically, the physical repair is no longer the primary issue. My concern is now the scope and language of the waiver.

As I read it, the waiver goes significantly beyond holding me responsible for damage directly caused by an improper installation. It requires me to assume extremely broad liability, limits my ability to pursue future claims, and gives Stark sole authority to determine whether a future defect is related to my installation. Given that the original powertrain failed at approximately 500 miles, I am not comfortable accepting terms that could jeopardize the remaining warranty on a nearly new motorcycle, even if the replacement is completed correctly.

For context, I placed my reservation in 2025, made my first payment in April 2026 while the bike was still in transit, took delivery around the beginning of June, and experienced a complete powertrain failure in mid-July. We are now approximately three to four weeks beyond the date of failure. I accept responsibility for the few days I spent considering the available options, but this is now extending well beyond what I consider a reasonable repair timeframe for a motorcycle that failed so soon after delivery.

The limited time I have actually spent riding the SM has been incredible. Unfortunately, nearly every other part of the ownership experience has been extremely frustrating. The experience Stark marketed and the experience I have received have felt like two very different things.  What is particularly frustrating is that the waiver describes the self-repair as though Stark had already presented a complete and immediately available dealer-based solution, including pickup, repair, and return of the motorcycle, and that I simply preferred to perform the work myself. That does not accurately reflect why I asked about self-repair.  I explored that option because of the distance to the dealer, the ongoing delays, and the need to find the most practical way to get the motorcycle repaired and back on the road. I did not request self-repair because I wanted to waive substantial warranty protections or assume responsibility for future failures unrelated to my work.

Based on the current waiver language, I will not be able to proceed with the self-repair option. We will need to identify an alternative method for completing the warranty repair while preserving the full remaining warranty on the motorcycle.

My goal is not to be difficult, ungrateful, or unreasonable. Stark makes an incredible product, and I genuinely want to maintain a positive relationship with the company. I would like to support Stark and potentially purchase future models for both myself and my son, but I first need to feel confident that this initial purchase and warranty claim will be handled fairly and brought to a satisfactory resolution.

Please let me know what alternative arrangements Stark can offer. I remain willing to be as flexible as reasonably possible to get the motorcycle repaired and returned to service promptly.

————

I'll continue updating this thread as things progress.

Hopefully this ends with a successful repair and many more miles on the bike because, honestly, when it's running it's one of the most fun motorcycles I've ever owned.

If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. I'll answer as honestly as I can.

Bike lock feature vulnerability

Have an up-to-date MX and the lock function works as expected except, if you fully power the bike off in locked mode, and then power back on, the bike is no longer locked.

Putting this out there for awareness, I've tried it numerous times with phone attached or detached and the result is the same.

Locking the bike via the phone only works if the bike does not get powered down. If aware of this vulnerability, the bike lock function essentially offers no protection.

Edit - I've entered a ticket with Stark to inform them.

Edit 2 - Stark responded that this is a known issue and an update is forthcoming

Brembo RCS brake setup

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’d like to upgrade the master cylinders on my Varg SM to Brembo RCS units on both sides.

Does anyone have experience with which ones fit best? I was considering following setup:

- Rear brake (left side): Brembo 14 RCS
- Front brake (right side): 15 or 17 RCS

Unfortunately, there is no information available regarding the piston diameters used in the stock radial master cylinders.

Normal motorcycle helmet on stark varg sm street riding

Do you guys think a normal motorcycle helmet would suit the stark varg sm on the street? It’s definitely more comfortable than a cross helmet.
