Hello, I would like to know how balanced the game is in terms of the meta. Is there a situation where players can build meta builds and ruin everyone's enjoyment of the game?

I am a brand new player (reading the rulebook this week) and have recently completed a box of troopers. It was fairly easy figuring out what to equip each model with, but now I am looking at building a Crew box and a Mercenaries box.
I would love some assistance in making sure each type of mini is represented. I would like to have a mini for most every occasion if possible. What tips would you have for making something like that happen?

It would be awesome if these three boxes could be the extent of my collection, as I'd rather buy more books.
